Alas, I have to consider some other hardware that is more BSD friendly than what I currently have for my main laptop. Wifi worked great on NetBSD, whereas it was flaky on FreeBSD, but the audio input was the flaky one.
A ThinkPad, maybe? I'll gladly accept hardware recommendations for BSD-friendly models from at least a decade ago (read: cheap).
Current status: Deciding between Void and Alpine for the next episode of The Main Machine Trials®
#Microsoft just gave me the push I needed to wipe that #windows10 partition that I almost never boot into anyway. Being an #openbsd user that wants to get into #android app development, I am considering #voidlinux . What do you think fedi, any thoughts on the best option for me?
There is no better time to return from a hiatus than now! I guess I should re-introduce myself to anybody who sees this. I am justsoup, a person who likes #MobileLinux a little too much, specifically #postmarketOS. I have a totally healthy obsession with making #Lomiri run on it for no reason other than not being a spy for Canonical. I also tinker with Chromebooks sometimes. I run #VoidLinux as my daily driver and absolutely love #Linux (if that wasn't obvious).
@bagder too bad I'm unable to compile curl with Http3 flag, because my current distro has a too old version of.. I think it was openssl? Or? Anyhow, time to move to void linux. #curl#void#linux#voidlinux#http3
To get that “full desktop” experience I am reinstalling #VoidLinux with the @xfce iso. I am still staying with #musl. I will probably install #Cinnamon too.
#Gnome was okay, but the inability to easily install the extensions was a no bueno for me. My gnome needs to have some spice; vanilla doesn’t cut it 🌶️
Will those voices in my head please give it a rest !
Tempting to try a #VoidLinux#bcachefs install on an old laptop or pc now it's officially made it into the Linux 6.7 kernel. You know just for research purposes you understand. Like seeing how it compares to my daily drivers #ZFS filesystem. 🤔
OK now I've revised my #VoidLinux#ZFSBootMenu Install document. Revisions include removing kernel resume support as I wouldn't really use suspend to disk and changing the separate swap partition to an encrypted one for more security thanks to info supplied by @dwarmstrong . Anybody fancy a proof read to see what dreadful mistakes have been made by myself ?? 😍
Ok so I've removed resume support from my #VoidLinux#ZFSBootMenu setup and encrypted my swap partition too.
I'm going to have to update my installation doc at some point soon. Not now though as it's #NewYearsEve 😉
I'm so lazy ! I've a blog page to write up on my current #VoidLinux#ZFS#ZFSBootMenu setup with installation instructions / suggestions and suggested tweaks. Yet here I am lounging in a bath. 🙄
Inspired by the example set by @JustineSmithies I'm closing out the year with a Void install on ZFS-Root + native encryption + ZFSBootMenu. :void: :linux:
Thought I'd share a quick screenshot of some of the stats of my newly setup #ThinkPad .
Yes I've used a large swap but that's what I had before and well I can afford the space.
Well it's booted and I'm in as root for now. I see a few errors on screen there which I can hopefully resolve. Not sure about the "failed to lock /etc/exports.d/zfs.exports.lock: No such file or directory" ????
So all in all I take this as a win as I did expect it to boot first time. I have been documenting my steps though in case I need to redo this install. #ZFS#ZFSBootMenu#VoidLinux
If all goes well with my #VoidLinux#ZFSBootMenu install tomorrow I might be tempted to give #Zsh a try instead of my usual trusty #Bash ?
Anyone want to chime in with reasons for and against zsh ?
my work laptop on #opensuse started showing some annoyances and that distro hopping itch is getting stronger.
currently i'm checking out #voidlinux on my personal laptop, trying to script most of the setup while i'm going, so i could easily deploy it to my work laptop in case i end up liking it 🤓
