People who have moved from X11 to Wayland: what are the benefits that you have experienced from using Wayland over X11 and what issues have you had to deal with? #X11#Wayland#Linux
@thezerobit The only real issues have been learning what WM/DE use Wayland and what X apps have Wayland equivalents. Also under Wayland the WM is the compositor whereas in X you ran a separate compositor for things like shadows and blur.
The benefits for me is that it just works and is secure and constantly developing. FWIW I use #RiverWm and have used #Qtile under Wayland.
You like #Qtile and want to see what's possible under #Wayland then go look at this discussion. I mean it may not come to anything but the possiblities are really cool.
I have to say although I'm a #Qtile#Wayland user I try to keep up with the development of #RiverWM as this is definitely the window manager to watch.
What would make it near perfect for me but you may disagree is:
1: A riverctl rule to open a matching appid or title at a set position / size.
2: A sticky rule that instead of making the app available on every tag which to me would mess with most status bars. Something that would stick that app to a set output or maybe the currently focused.
I'm probably going to regret posting this, But I'm not sure what's changed as I haven't suffered any random crashes on :qtile: #Qtile#Wayland recently. Really can't figure it out as the logs never gave any indication and the devs could see anything either from my reports. Not so long ago I could get it to crash just by hitting the mod key and sometimes by closing an app but now not all all. Fingers crossed that what ever it was is gone now. 🤞
Hmm I've been running #Qtile#Wayland from their git repo for 7 hours now and still haven't managed to get it to crash. Usually it would have crashed by now. This maybe progress or as I hear someone saying right now "Don't speak too soon". #TilingWindowManger
Oh dear Lord please help me !
I really love #Qtile running under #Wayland but recently it seemed to crash a lot for no apparent reason. Yes I reported the issues but we could not find the reason. So I switched to #SwayWM as everything just works there. But you know me I keep going back to Qtile and as of today's commits I cannot make it crash ! So far that is. I really need to stop this back and forth and just commit 100%.
Anyone else keep switching between or is it just me that needs help ? 😂
You know when something used to crash just about every time you used it so you stopped using it.
Then you go back to it some days later and you can't for the life of you make it crash ? Well today I thought I'd update my #Qtile Wayland from the git repo just to see what's new and so far I've not been able to make it crash, Although I cannot see anything in the commits logs that would resolve the issue ???
Oh well keep I'll keep testing things to see if it'll crash again. Very random indeed. 🤔
I must say.. I have both #River and #Qtile installed on #voidlinux and although i love my #Qtile config, it does seem #River is a little more responsive and snappier. But since Qtile crashed often lately (threw me back to tty1) it might be my config.. Seems something with Mod4-key that triggered it.. But not Mod4+something but just Mod4 and perhaps a/various other keys. When i wanted to switch workspaces for example. But to clarify it's not Mod+ a specific key, but more random it seems.
Did you have any of these troubles before switch to the git-version on void @JustineSmithies ??
I got the right Epoch now. So my date for the 2 year challenge displays properly. My bar is lookin better now. Still a work in progress. We are almost there.
I'm a happy camper as have got a work around for my issue running #Qutebrowser under #Qtile#Wayland which wouldn't allow me to upload images to Fosstodon if the window was tiled. Although this work around works the issue is still being kept open for now by the devs until they find out why.
For those it affects just pop this into your floating layout config:
Match(func=lambda c: c.is_transient_for()), # automatically float a window if it has a parent
Started a fresh since moving from Arch to #VoidLinux and re did my #Qtile#Wayland#Dotfiles . I have also included in the README how I install Qtile from their git repo.
There may be mistakes but hopefully I've got most already.
I need to stop procrastinating at some point and actually get on ticking off things from my ever growing to-do list. The most important things are adding some more blog posts on my updated #aerc setup and how I install #Qtile from their #git repo for running under #wayland on #VoidLinux .
I've also a ton of updates to push to my own git repo for the many changes I've made to my dotfiles.
Not tonight though maybe next week we'll see. 🙃
