The protocol is Activity Pub.

Lemmy is one frontend that translates Activity Pub data into a format that resembles Reddit, more precisely, link sharing and community building.

Kbin does the same, but it’s an entirely different front end. It wouldn’t make sense to call it a “Lemmy” or “Feddit” or anything like that.

Lemmy instances are… Lemmy.

Kbin instances are… Kbin.

Mastodon instances are… Mastodon.

Everything that uses Activity Pub is often called the Fediverse (federation + universe).
