This is a great takedown of Steven Bell's piece in C&RL.

Open Offices are Neither More Open nor More Equitable

"I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone that working in open and shared office spaces has a significantly negative impact on productivity and that is supported in recent systematic reviews of the existing literature (Gerlitz & Hülsbeck, 2023; James, Delfabbro, & King, 2021; Masoudinejad & Veitch, 2022)."

I gave up and stopped after a few attempts of registering for AI+Higher Ed or Libraries online events and they turned out to just be Ra Ra! cheerleading events about how magical/wonderful/innovative AI is. Are there any HE/Library events on AI available that are more realistic/critical/clear-eyed?

Library folks: Marquette U has an opening for an early/mid career STEM research/instruction librarian. Please help us spread the word (and/or apply)!

"To computer scientists, however, the rise of artificial intelligence is no different than the advent of the pocket calculator or the Google search engine: It’s a tool that, if used correctly, can help people learn faster and think on a deeper level." -- From https://www.chronicle.com/article/scared-of-ai-dont-be-computer-science-instructors-say

Ugh --- how to convince one's / colleagues that "AI" is not at all like the pocket calculator, functionally or pedagogically, and that it's not just a bad metaphor but a dangerous one? Or further, that we did a TERRIBLE job adapting critically to Google Search precisely because we failed, socially and culturally, to adequately challenge its assumed neutrality (even though many valiantly tried).

Who benefits from these sorts of rhetorical gestures? (Why are they frequently deployed by tech elites/CEOs?)

I’m looking for an instructional/reference position in a college or university in NYC or its non-NJ suburbs. I have graduate degrees in education and literature in addition to my MLIS. If you know of any openings, please send them my way!

Re-posting this in the hopes of reaching more folks, with thanks to those who've already connected with me and helped out...

Hi and folks. I'm mentoring some awesome faculty who are creating an undergraduate Library & Archival Studies Concentration in Africana Studies at their institution. The purpose of the concentration is to encourage undergraduates to pursue MLIS degrees.

One of the things we're focusing on is developing an introductory foundations class. I've been brainstorming possible things to cover and would love your input and ideas.

Currently I've organized things by:

  1. Things library folks need to know
  2. Things library folks (may) need to do
  3. Professional pathways (a set of perspectives for framing the content)

DM if you'd like to contribute to my brainstorming doc, or add your thoughts here👇
