There's a guy in Wisconsin who sells... Mouse Tape!?

My pals in BBC World Service have been doing some awesome work on "lite" versions of their news articles (other page types to follow).
They essentially skip the Server-Side React hydration which means you end up with a simpler HTML+CSS page, no JS.
Page sizes drop significantly:

@tdp_org This makes me so happy. I still shrink and compress images all the time for email, web, etc. because 99% of the time a huge multi-megabyte image just isn't needed.

My bike ride today was only 4.5 miles... It was pretty windy and started to rain so I called it and headed home.

The great thing about the cemetery is that when you reach an intersection you often have multiple choices and some might be uphill, some might be downhill, or flat, so you can choose your adventure.

I finished a new three color print today… contemplating doing a whole series of balls. Another relief print on handmade paper created with 3D printed printing plates.

Also yesterday, while people were mocking gender reveal parties...

Family Member: "What's the point of it anyway? It's either going to be a boy or a girl."

Me: "Well, actually..."

Me: "Gender is not binary, it's fluid, and you might not even know the gender your child identifies with for years or decades after their birth, if they even feel comfortable talking to you about it..."

(I am the "crazy uncle" but so far left of the rest of my lefty family I make them look like Reagan sometimes.)

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@poleguy I think that for parents who do a gender reveal it's all about expectations. "Oh, a boy! He'll play baseball and go fishing with dad!" or "Ohhh, a girl! She'll be feminine and love dresses!" which all all a bunch of bullshit. Just let kids be kids and figure out what they like. No pressure to be whatever.

(A "genital reveal party" sounds like a fun time between consenting adults!)

People who knew me as a "techie guy" over a decade ago are sometimes surprised at how critical I am of new technology.

But maybe tech has gotten worse, influenced more and more by greed... or maybe I've become much more ethical with age.

Or maybe both are true?

I'm 100% fine with being more ethical. Historically though I've always been a fan of DIY/low cost/open technology solutions over integrated/proprietary bullshit from corporations.

(And yeah, I'm still a hypocrite in some ways. Sorry!)

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

But if you're going to be a hypocrite, at least recognize and admit to be... be aware of it! Just like you should be aware of your privilege and how that's put you into whatever positions you are in.

Be aware, and beware. Stay alert. Be critical. Call things out (including yourself!)

My two siblings and I disagree on how to treat a family member who is a MAGA Trumper:

Sister: "He's family, we need to respect that."

Brother: "I'm going to keep trying to point out the bad things he supports and try to change his mind."

Me: "Fuck that guy, he's a fascist and I want nothing to do with him. He should be ostracized."

I'm still not totally sure which approach is the best but I know where I stand.

My wife sent me a calendar invite to something called "Kittentits" and I assumed it was a punk band but supposedly it's a new novel by one of her colleagues and we'll be going to a reading.

I've been experimenting with loading photos not taken on the toy camera and loading them onto the camera just to print them out... I think you need to get a small file size and maybe(?) remove metadata... though it may also be an issue around how some software writes a JPG.

I don't know if anyone else has figured this out yet, but if not, I'm working on it through trial and error.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@concretedog Try with a smaller file size as well.. like 700k.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@erik @concretedog One of my first tests was doing that, but with Affinity Photo... I thought the added metadata screwed it up so I tried again without it, no luck.

I then tried to use the macOS Preview.app to export the JPG, and that seemed to work, so maybe it's how the JPG is written out?

But I tried again with a larger image and no good... So I did more JPG compression to make it a smaller file (around 77k) and that did work!

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@erik @concretedog I was getting a gray image, then a glitched image, neither of which would print, but my final attempt showed a normal image and did print.

So I'm thinking things affecting it are: metadata, file size, and/or how the JPG is written out to disk. (Assuming different programs might write them differently?)

Excited to see what others discover!

@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@pwalck @erik @concretedog @ge0rg @tobbsn Hey, guess what? I may have been overthinking things... Today's test was, take a photo on my phone, open in Preview.app, export JPG at around 700k, copy to SD card and then... print!

Maybe it's just file size that matters?

(More testing to do...)

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@pwalck @erik @concretedog @ge0rg @tobbsn Hmmm, I tried another/different photo (because I realized I had cropped the cat photo) this time using Affinity Photo saved to a 721k JPG and it displays but will not print. So it's not just file size...

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@pwalck @erik @concretedog @ge0rg @tobbsn Final test this morning! Photo from phone, full resolution, opened in Preview.app, exported as JPG around 700k… that works.

So that’s good. Now to figure out why… and start to mess around with ImageMagick. ;)

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross There is definitely some weirdness around aspect ratio and how the prints come out... more testing is needed!

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@concretedog @pwalck @erik @ge0rg @tobbsn So far most (or all?) of my tests have been using photos originally taken with an iPhone SE (2nd Gen) saved as JPG.

Affinity Photo exports have not worked, but Preview.app on macOS does.

I'll keep trying more combinations when I get time.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@concretedog @pwalck @erik @ge0rg @tobbsn How are you file sizes? For my camera I've tried to keep them around 700k... one that was much larger definitely did not work until I make it smaller.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@concretedog @pwalck @erik @ge0rg @tobbsn I got that 700k number from looking at the files on the SD card... I'm thinking it's got to be a metadata thing or something to do with how the JPG is written out to disk.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross Hopefully it’s the correct width… if not, trim it down!

@concretedog I should revise mine! I tried to use it a week ago and the included stock needle just snapped in half... never saw that happen before.
