People put a lot of thought into their posts, and don't like it when someone hijacks the thread with off-topic suggestions. Just let it go, or maybe send them a respectful PM.
Likewise the changes here have been pretty traumatic for some long time users. There is no right way to Mastodon, but you can be polite when declining these suggestions.

Do you know librarians who have created Mastodon instances?
A librarian at my institution is interested in advocating for creating one. It might be helpful to read about other librarians' experiences doing this or the existence of some other cases managed by libraries.
Mastodon is great, the only thing I miss on this app is quote posts. I know they have a bad rap bc of Twitter, but every major social network has this functionality for a reason (Tumblr, LinkedIn, Facebook, IG). As a journalist, I’d love to add commentary and amplify great info, build on ppl’s points, etc. You just can’t do that the same wait with replies! Is there any chance we might get them on here?

But my impression is that "Quote Tweeting" is a way you can share other peoples' content without their involvement, and add your own comments, without engaging with them directly, and they lose control of their content, the only option for "bad attention" being to delete your content.
Mastodon has "Boost", which allows you to share other peoples' content with your followers - is that not sufficient for your use-case ?
