Anyone can scale Mastodon in a technical manner. That is the easy part. It’s the moderation, and one person being in control of moderation. I intentionally brought moderators onto #Tooters way early on to help me scale what I cannot do myself…satisfying people in an objective manner.
I’ve been down this road before (shout out to my PHP bulletin board peeps) and I am telling you from experience that an admin cannot be central to the control of the community.
Know what I want as an instance admin? To not give a shit about the inflated egos hovering above me. Break these large instances up. Then Newsie can feel free to vastly inflate active user numbers, Universeodon can go “cook” a goat with Zuckerberg, Stux can cry in a mirror, and @theropologist can…keep being the proverbial shit. Love you man 🫂 lol.
Otherwise what the fuck are we doing here? Huh? I should build up a community based on values I believe in just to have some admin across the pond throw a pissy fit, and now I’m spending my evening answering the question of “why is this person doing this?” just because they have a user base that hasn’t gotten hip to the bullshit yet?
