For reasons, I hadn't really been interested in seeing #Wonka#WonkaMovie , but recently, a friend was talking the film up to me, unsolicited. I guess she was persuasive enough, because I went to see it last night.
I did enjoy the film, and for some reason, it hit totally different than the trailer, which had left me not interested in seeing the film. There were elements in the movie that were completely left out of the trailer that might have made me more interested. 1/3
Having now seen the film, I'm not really understanding some of the criticisms I'd heard about it.
For no reason that I can articulate, the opening number in this film reminded me of "The Greatest Showman", which I loved, so that definitely put me in a positive mood. #Wonka#WonkaMovie 2/3
Saw Wonka. Enjoyed it but it's confused, feels like the studio tried to impose a conventional kids film onto it - mostly unsuccessfully but to the detriment of the film (Wonka did not need family subplots!).
But the rest seems like a more pure Dahl adaptation than the actual adaptations - silliness and cynicism intact (even as it clashes with the studio film).
Good film, could've been a lot better, the best Dahl film buried in the confusion somewhere.
