RadicalAnthro, 10 months ago to menopause Very interesting review on the evolution of #postreproductive lifespan/ #menopause question. It argues that for certain highly #encephalised species (Late Pleistocene humans, and some whales) there is a need of 'intensive screening' and quality control of #oocyte mitochondria. Given a finite number of viable oocytes, female fertility period is limited (but why survive so much longer then?) https://zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jzo.13096
