Slides for my @smashingconf talk about how to create performance budgets – to fight regressions and keep your site fast – are up. Thank you to all the folks who attended and asked such great questions!

If you're into and would like to learn how other folks have found their way to our world, @tannerhodges has a really fun podcast called Catching Up. He chats with folks (like @anniesullie @ethangardner @tunetheweb & @viniciusdallacqua) about their performance journeys. Definitely worth a listen!

Love this post by @cliff. He does more than explain what Interaction to Next Paint is and how it's measured. He looks at real user data and creates correlation charts that show how INP aligns with actual user behaviour. It's all about the users!

Starting today, INP is no longer experimental and will instead be considered a “pending” Core Web Vital metric.

This is a new designation to indicate that INP has proven its readiness to replace FID.

To give the ecosystem time to adjust, INP will officially become a stable Core Web Vital metric in March 2024.

Anyone remembers an experiment like "this page could have been an image" comparing an actual web page to a screenshot of that page?

EDIT: found it, that was https://www.webbloatscore.com/

What do companies with fast websites have in common? They all (in my experience) use performance budgets to prevent regressions.

This post has been a long time coming. I did my best to distill all the best practices I've shared at conferences and during countless consultations with companies of all sizes. I hope people find it helpful!

tip: Optimize your critical rendering path by inlining critical CSS and deferring non-critical styles, for example for content below the fold. This helps your site to render faster and improves perceived load time.
