I make my debut on PC Gamer looking at - what else - a cursed story from Italian development and one that I very much care about, since Cannibal Holocaust is still one of my favorite horror movies from the 80s. But one that also carries a heavy burden which the devs were not ready for.

@angelus_04 finished last week…well 😅 it aged not so well but I’m not a big fan of this “interactive film” adventures so I could be wrong. Acting was meh and the story not so great. I think I’ll get to “The harvester” as the final title that I’ll add to my collection and move on with other genres…

Il frontalino nero del 5.25 un poco mi disturba ma tant’è 🤷‍♂️ ricapitolando: 486 DX2 Intel 66MHz, 2x8MB EDO RAM, Vga Cirrus Logic GD5428 1MB VLB, adattatore CF-IDE con CF da 1GB e SoundBlaster 16 ISA (con OPL3). Lato periferiche sono coperto: lettore CD 8x, floppy 3.5” e 5,25”. 🤙🏻

Ooooooocchei… scheda madre VLB in viaggio con a bordo un AMD DX2/66 (che terrò montato, si dice andassero anche meglio delle controparti Intel ma devo documentarmi) e 2x4MB RAM Micron che però sostituirò con i 16MB Samsung già in possesso. Ora il waiting game…

La cosa procede a rilento 😅 la mia esperienza su sistemi Socket3 è decisamente limitata da cui le difficoltà recenti. Dopo aver bene o male trovato il setup semi-definitivo per le periferiche IDE (hdd/CF con adattatore e lettore CD) e floppy 3.5” (un canale IDE del controller VLB non ne vuole sapere di andare per cui ho messo CF e lettore CD come master/slave sullo stesso canale IDE 🤷‍♂️) mi sono imbattutto nel pare famoso limite di molte piattaforme Socket3 di creare partizioni maggiori di 504MB!

Da cui o rinuncio a metà della capacità della CF da 1GB 🥹 oppure uso un overlay software che permette di avere le capacità che si vuole (rispetto ai filesystem voluti, ovviamente). Tutto risolto quindi? Assolutamente no in quanto l’overlay per funzionare deve essere “avviato” dal disco stesso durante il boot, ergo, se usi un CD o un floppy di boot PRIMA del overlay stesso NON puoi accedere al disco. 🤯 Il setup di MS-DOS si pianta all’avvio 🫣 Windows 3.11 CD non è bootabile. Proverò con floppy 🙃

Alternativa sarebbe quella di montare la CF su windows, copiare le cartelle del setup di ms-dos o windows e poi lanciare da lì i setup dopo l’avvio del overlay disco 🤔Indovinate? Non ho un lettore CF in giro 😅 se mi rompo le balle saluto l’overlay e installo in nativo su soli 504 MB (che a metà anni 90 non era affatto poco spazio btw)…overlay disco usato: OnTrack Disk Manager, scaricabile dal buon https://www.philscomputerlab.com/ una delle tante risorse del mondo e
