Update: successfully gamed Duolingo this week

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@Migueldeicaza Holy crap! I too have been in the diamond league (in the midst of the pandemic, summertime). I was dethroned after the first week was over 😅. People there actually cared a LOT about staying in the top league. I didn’t have a chance 😂

I usually don't like widget UI, but with some care, this is starting to look nice!

I'm so happy with my @IceCubesApp codebase. Adding inline posting within an AppIntent was actually five lines of code! Next is having inline account selection exposed as AppEntry!

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@dimillian @IceCubesApp Regarding ”InlinePostIntent: AppIntent” and its description computed property, I don’t think it’s required for you to specify ”get” since you aren’t using ”set” below/above it. In case you want to shave off the code even more 😊

Achievement unlocked, rolled a virtual dice with my hands.

A pair of hands made of bananas pick up a giant D20 and throw it, in VR.

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@jamesthomson Seems like you are lifting the dice using magnetism, sort of? This is not me being critical: rather, I’m fascinated by the physics and the interaction process. Also, very impressed by your 3D work and imagine it’s very rewarding to feel the code you have been working on for so long on the non-spatial platforms 🥹🥇

It's been an amazing journey since I started toot.community. However, due to personal commitments, I'm stepping down. The community deserves undivided attention, which I can't provide anymore. So, I'm handing the reins over to the reliable hands of the Fedihosting Foundation (https://fedihosting.foundation). I have confidence they'll keep treating you the way you deserve.

I'm grateful for the connections I made here, and I'd like to thank you all for your support and trust in me. It means a lot. ❤️

@jorijn Thank you for providing a secure, anti-spammed Mastodon instance with excellent uptime and for answering questions I’ve had in the past about the server and stuff! I’m a happy user of the Mastodon service ⭐️

Glad sommar, vrolijke zomer, have a great summer! Enjoy some quality time with loved ones and hope this experience with managing the instance will come in handy in future tech endeavours 🙂

Like many people, I had my Apple ID locked last night, and it was a big hassle trying to get it unlocked and working again.

One tip - when you go through all the rigmarole to get it going again, one thing that doesn't switch on by default is receiving iMessages or FaceTime calls via your Apple ID. So, like me, you will probably be missing messages until you reenable those in Settings. Also, if you send somebody a new iMessage it will default to your phone number which may not be what you want.

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@jamesthomson I got 5 active Apple ID-connected devices. Neither one were acting up yesterday, nor today. Since I’m in a different region it’s likely a regional roll-out, one they will probably pause while they correct their mass-reconfiguration deployment.

Unless there was an account breach incident (such as brute-force attempts) for X percent of users and Apple made an emergency password reset for affected accounts.

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@jamesthomson Even though they classify it as ”security-related” it doesn’t mean it’s serious. It could be a routine thing, maybe forcing a reset.

@jamesthomson I know about Sherlock and Sherlocking, but Watson, apart from the obvious book character reference … well, this is what ”Watson” is to me, the Dr Watson application in Windows 3.10, except Win2k is depicted here (it survived until at least Windows 7, maybe even longer than that): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr.

Making things even more confusing, it used to be called Sherlock in the past, the Wikipedia article claims 😅

@Migueldeicaza just investigating SwiftGodot; this can be used to build Windows and Android binaries? Does the Swift code compile to an intermediary format? I have a whole pile of Unity game code that I'd love to port to something I can use from Xcode and build for other platforms

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@NailClippings @stroughtonsmith @Migueldeicaza Slack is an IRC web app with emojis, more or less.

I used Slack at work every work day for several years, until Microsoft Teams became the new default (unfortunately). Slack had its fair share of memory leakage, but still a good web app. I had used IRC since the 90s and appreciated access to ”/join” and other IRC-relatable cmds. It always felt unobtrusive (unlike the jumbo jet we call Teams).

@viticci I know people think ”AI!” when they see this. Me? I’m thinking ”Accessibility galore!”. Or, as Satya Nadella would put it: ”Empowering every user in the world to achieve more!”, except it’s Apple who gets there first, because Microsoft is only getting started on integrating the OpenAI-based CoPilot.

@jamesthomson Question regarding iPad 11 inch: you posted something about a screen issue many months ago, way back in 2023 or so.

Did it ever get resolved with software updates, or is it still an issue? I believe it was a thin line going vertically across the screen. Just curios since I have the same* generation, M1 iPad.

*= Different Apple A model nr. Possibly different screen manufacturer, too, if Apple outsourced production to multiple suppliers like Samsung and LG, etc.

Achievement unlocked: Made myself feel motion sick while wearing a Vision Pro using my own code.

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@jamesthomson I believe you need to use:

DEBAG
// TODO: Implement motion sickness countermeasure

DEBAG is not a typo: it suggests that the main code requires a paperbag to be present at all times while the app is being used, and the Swift ”if” macro-like code is a ”de-bag”, a workaround.

Working with an editor is a great way to improve your writing, except for the part where they want to change your undeniably perfect sentences.

@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@jamesthomson @dmoren Are you sure? I found this book on my bookshelf the other day. J.T. Doe, is that you? 🧐

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@jamesthomson @dmoren Right 🤭. Btw, I chose “Delphi” for the “So long” quote, because it’s close enough to “Dolphin” (or “Delfin” in Swedish). Thought it would be appropriate because of the Pascal association – and then in turn – classis Mac app dev.

Now that I have 36 GB of RAM I’ve discovered that those two just use as much as possible. The more you have, the more they use.

Arcticulate,

@dimillian The simulator probably allocates a lot more GPU VRAM. That is always super nice.

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@Migueldeicaza If it helps, there’s this project which makes SQLite ”swifty”: https://github.com/stephencelis/SQLite.swift

Unless you want to avoid a third-party library for it.

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@Migueldeicaza Oh, interesting. Yeah, I guess there are good reasons why C is popular in memory-constrained situations … as long as memory leaks are avoided, of course, hehe.

It’s been almost a month, and I’m unable to sit and play a video game. I get hyped about a game, I install it, launch it, and then get absolutely bored in about 7 minutes. Burnout is still good, tho.

Arcticulate,
@Arcticulate@toot.community avatar

@Nicovel0 @dimillian Yeah, same here: ”Burnout is still good, tho” … said NO ONE. EVER. Oh, right, such as the third edition (Burnout 3), the EA game that was released for the Playstation 2 maybe two decades ago now? I still have my PS2 (tucked away) with a couple of games (my first ever DVD player like many other people in 2002 …)

Arcticulate,

@jamesthomson The iPad doesn’t have a calculator bundled, but now I’m certain that Apple is going to make their own and bundle it with every device for free! It’s called … 🥁 … VisiCalc!

Oh wait ….. 😭

@jamesthomson Supposed to be a 100 % joke, as I want PCalc to continue its success, if someone else missed the very old reference to spreadsheets.

@jamesthomson Heh 😊

Arcticulate,
