AustinGorton, to Starwars

For Polygon, I look at how Dave Filoni is drawing on his love of Tolkien to play up Star Wars' fantasy elements in .

122 - Year 21 Creator: Paul Smith

Hard to think of another artist who packed this much amazing work into so few issues. He deserves recognition for the way he draws hair alone.

040 - Fantastic Four Roast #1 (2/9/1982)

Wolverine looks like he's hitting on Vision; any guesses on what he's saying?

Cover by Fred Hembeck & Terry Austin. Interiors by Hembeck, Jim Shooter & friends.

AustinGorton,

@Jonathanglick @AustinGorton I think it’s meant to be Fred Hembeck.

Also out today in 1984, Uncanny X-Men from John Romita Jr. and Ron Zalme.

The X-Men return from Secret Wars to lounge on the logo.

Card 129: Desaad

Once again, a card succeeds by zooming in a little. Love the little waggle of fingers that almost seems to exist from his gloved hand.

Card 132: Granny Goodness

Love the idea of riffing on "American Gothic" w/Granny in place of the stoic farmer and his wife. Makes me want to see more trading cards recreating famous images w/superheroes.

Card 174: Showcase

A fun cover but another curious inclusion over the likes of the Silver Age Flash debut, anything w/Aquaman, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, all of whom I'd argue are more relevant, even/especially in '92.

Card 166: War of the Gods A

By no means an exceptional card, compared to some of the other Great battles card, this seems like a masterpiece.

280 - Year 47 Fun Fact: Welcome to the Rock

Utopia isn't the first time the operate out of an island off the shore of San Francisco; they briefly headquartered on Alcatraz just prior to "Fall of the Mutants", before relocating to Australia.

Card 073: Punisher

Kinda ho-hum. A tighter shot might've worked better. Punisher also isn't a character I associate w/Spider-Man or Batman-esque mid-building clings (rooftops, sure, but not sides of buildings like this).

Card 086: Storm

Jusko effectively renders Storm's raw power, but it does seem a little weird to have the background so water based vs. sky based.

Card H8: Superman

Almost, but not quite, the mirror image of the cardbacks on this cardfront. I love that Simonson gives him the poofier cape at the shoulders.

AustinGorton, to XMen

Card 007: Beast

Continuing the trend of recent sets, the Blue/Gold distinction is made.
Jusko included the machinery (which has always struck me as alien-esque) to speak to the "scientific aspect" of Beast.

Card 018: Cable

I love this era of Cable, when nothing concrete had been established yet and creators outside the X-office have to make trading cards for him. This is probably one of the last cards of that era.

Card 024: Dr. Strange

According to Jusko, one of the factors that determined use of a closeup was the level of interest he had in the character

I love how Strange's 1st cover appearance qualifies on the barest technicality

Card 083: Thanos

A properly cosmic - if somewhat busy and...awkwardly posed - card for the Mad Titan.

323 - Year 55 Fun Fact: Down with X!

While it's never been confirmed (& likely never will be) there is a consensus among fans that Marvel downplayed the at this time cuz they didn't have the rights for X-Men movies while the MCU was ascendant.

AustinGorton, to DCComics

Card 123: Mr. Miracle

I don't usually associate Mr. Miracle w/Deadpool-esque 4th wall breaking but this is still a super fun card & a neat way to represent his whole "escape artist" thing. He's escaping from his card!

image/jpeg

AustinGorton, to SpiderMan

Card 077: Sandman

Dude's got some wild eyes!

I like that while the cardback details his then-recent face turn, the front just goes all out super-villain in its depiction.

AustinGorton, to DCComics

Card 142: Crisis on Earths One & Two
.
New category: Great Battles

Starting off, appropriately enough, with a Crisis, already DC's go-to noun for indicating a big story, though the image here isn't all that dynamic.

Card 084: Super-Skrull

Love the fiery Thing fist.

Who is your favorite "bad guy that has all the powers of the good guys" character?

Card 145: Crisis on Infinite Earths

Skipping past an assortment of other pre-Crisis Crises, we now come to the big one, w/a more dynamic image that calls on some of the iconography that's become associated w/the story.

Card H6: Hawkman

Hawkman continues his oddly-strong showing in the set, though I don't think the then-current Hawkworld iteration lends itself as strongly to the hologram format.

image/jpeg

Card 136: Maxima
I know Maxima mostly from her time on the Justice League when they fought Doomsday, so it's weird to see her thrown in with the villains even though I know that's how she started out.
