Interested in setting up an instance with a spare laptop

I have a spare laptop running Linux Mint. I would like to try running my own instance and sharing it with a few users to help out and for the experience. Below are the specs. Do you think it will be powerful enough, and if so, how many users would it be able to handle? I could restrict uploading of media if that would make a...

I like how you accept that you have hyperfixations and then aim them at things that keep you healthy! That's pretty insightful. Thanks for sharing.

I see that you have a thing for flags. Ever hear do the Kingdom of Benin's flag? It's a bit intense lol

I have a question: what does black on flags generally represent? I think it usually means something anarchist or lack of central command, but I know I could be entirely wrong do to my personal political beliefs.

I love my ability to hyperfixate because it helps me become proficient in areas. For example, I went from knowing how a guitar practically works to running a guitar training and counseling program for people with severe PTSD that helped them communicate their emotions via music within 9 months. For that, I had to learn how to play guitar, teach playing guitar, come up with a protocol, then learn how to use that information to help the people I was helping express themselves musically. I did all of the learning on my own time, not work hours. The impact it had on those people was immeasurable and I still have the songs they wrote. They will forever be my treasures.

My hyperfixations generally tend to revolve around becoming autonomous and prepared for difficult situations. They also revolve around science, especially physics, and history. I can get lost down rabbit holes for days if I'm not careful. Right now, I'm getting a bit hyper-fixated with the whole FOSS and Fediverse idea, so it's looking like I might get into computer programming. I'm kind of excited to learn about that and how I can implement the options to accommodate my life more fittingly and help others.

It cracks me up that 20hrs went by, and no one responded 😆 That’s a really good joke

I don’t really understand the question. What specifically are you wondering about?

  1. If you’re asking how my mind is doing, I’m not sure. If you’re asking about the trajectory of my life, I’m not sure. If you’re asking me how my body feels, I’m not sure. If you’re asking how my day is going, then ask the day. I guess regardless of the spirit of the question, the answer is that I’m not sure.
  2. If you don’t care and are actually trying to spark up conversation, it would be more helpful to introduce a topic so that I could engage in it.
  3. I’m triggered lol
  4. I’m good. How about you? looks away uncomfortably

The people with the actual power are the board of directors and investors. All they care about is money. That's how they got to that position. As far as they're concerned, the right the decision is the one that makes them the most money. And by "them", I mean each individual. They are all fighting for themselves. They couldn't care less about each other, users, or the community. spez is being played like Ellen Pao. He's just the fall guy.

I used this tool myself. It deleted thousands of posts & comments automatically. It's pretty simple to use.

It's like breaking up with an ex and deleting old photos. What a weight off!

He shared a plan of attack. Is there anything that could be worse to share?

This guy's completely deranged, and he got elected president. There were probably ~165 million Americans eligible to run for US President in 20202016, and this is the guy that was selected. This is the one we came together and said, "Yep, he's the guy we trust. Let's put him in charge. He's the best we've got."

edit: wrong election year

yeah, this is the kind of outcome that would cause everyone at a family game night to enthusiastically review and amend the rules.

I make frequent typing errors too. I've accepted it as part of my quirks. That's just how I am 🤷‍♂️

I'm excited for it! There was an attempt at a mass reddit exodus over 5 years ago (I can't remember exactly when). The other sites I attempted didn't have anywhere the level of engagement that the Fediverse if getting now, and I think things are really going to pick up steam here once the blackout hits followed by the 3rd party apps shutting down. Things are looking pretty good for change 🙂

I find it interesting that we publically entertain the idea that it wasn't Russia clearly blowing up the dam to cause unbelievable suffering because the pain causes Putin and his buddies pleasure. Like, we all know it was Russia. Why would anyone suspect anyone else? Russia's word is so low at this point, that Zelenskyy and Biden could come out live on MSNBC, Fox News, PBS, the BBC, Al-Jazeera, and ESPN showing them shooting Ukranian kids, and I would wonder how it's Russia really doing it.

FYI, the admin of lemmy.world has a donation link on the sidebar of the instance (placed them below also). You can do a one-time donation or subscribe for monthly donations. Personally, I signed up for €1/month, but you don't have to donate anything. I just figured that helping out with funds could get us better services, supports free open-source software (FOSS), and goes to some regular dude rather than a corporation. If you do decide to donate, he prefers the opencollective option rather than the patreon one.

Here are the links for donations:

Putin mentions nukes every 2 weeks. We've been habituated by his frequent mention of nukes. I won't bat an eye until one actually goes off, for which I'm sure there are already plans in place to address by multiple countries, to include non-Western ones. Putin's wanna be mind games are a broken record. I'm excited for when this guy is no longer in the news.
