Bobbins

@Bobbins@bobbinsrobots.com

I have 13 progressively harder levels. Try me if you dare.

Rob. The real Peter Molyneux 2017/2018. Writes and writes about video games. Watches tat films. Touched a computer once, sorry.

If you’ve got a blacklist, I want to be on it. Disabled and tired.

Still Yak-ing.

I know I've banged on about how excited I am for the Yak compilation out in a few weeks but really, yes - I'm obviously hugely inspired by, thankful to Jeff for a lot of stuff over the years now.

But that aside for a moment, this whole Gold Master series is finally someone showing the respect the people who make things, who often go through hells to make videogames, they deserve.

We should be treasuring every non-wanker we have here, long termers or new.

I'm sure I've probably uttered it at some point because past me was a complete tool but if I start thinking of games in terms of them being "outdated", please slap me. In the face is fine, I'd deserve it.

Revisiting a doodle I was never especially happy with first time round. Artic's Galaxians, clapperboard Take 2.

Fun letter in this month's Edge lamenting that we (as gamers) used to be able to know about all the videogames and therefore could keep up with everything and how this is no longer possible, gaming has splintered into a variety of subcultures etc...

Harking back to the PS2 era as kind of the last time this was possible.

The letter isn't complaining about this! Just that it took them a long time to realise the splintering.

I think this is the generally accepted story now?

Was reading an article on The Verge about how smart home tech is good for the disabled and I just couldn’t stop thinking throughout “okay, right, but what happens when any part of this fails”.

Between me and Em, over the years there’s been a lot of adjustments to the house for accessibility. Whether it’s perching stools, rails, raised furniture, bathroom conversion and whatever. I’m a firm believer in doing what needs to be done to make stuff work for someone, no shame in whatever’s needed.

Should I really be reading state of the industry pieces, even from people I have a great deal of time for? No. Am I doing it anyway? Yes.

Reading stuff where I read the same thing in 1988 or something and it's that day of the week again where I sigh at institutional knowledge lost.

It's not so much that these things brought up aren't a problem but that they're recognised as recent, rather than perpetual.

The discourse has finally reached "it is good to pay for coverage of a videogame, people need to be paid". I think we can call it a wrap on videogames now as any ethics have well and truly been shat out the window and nothing is off the table anymore.

Absolutely broken ass world.

Curse my brain for reading a nonsense phrase describing a videogame ("so texturally convincing, you'll want to touch it") and getting stuck on what leads someone to put those words together as though it makes any sense.

I've never managed to train myself out of this one even though I know it's futility incarnate.

I wish video game news would just start from “it’s fancy autocorrect” wrt AI and work from there, rather than whatever report full of fanciful shite lands in their lap. Also, a pony please.

Embracer should probably change their name to Fucker Upper and be done with.

Read a thing last week sometime where Charla was (rightly) pointing out (agaiiiin because it needs repeating eternally for some reason) that discovery is the biggest problem an indie will face in getting noticed. Like, someone has to see your game first etc...

Anyway. That's right and all but I still don't know how to find anything on the xbox. So there is that.

I mean, this is categorically and demonstrably untrue and the history of games says 30 seconds to proving it as a nonsense.

“Creating an open-world game isn’t so much about building a world from the ground up anymore. It used to be a process where writers and artists would build a rich tapestry of lore, create interesting landmarks to densely pack into the world, and then, from there, the seed would blossom into a beautiful and engrossing landscape”

I think Jon Blow complaining about not being able to find Braid on PSN without scrolling to the bottom of the list of new releases and having to be told to stop sorting by best selling and it goes to the top will give me strength for years to come.

Okay, as it’s been a few years now since I last watched it, time for a Jerry Warren hack job special! Invasion Of The Animal People.

TV version, for the bonus extra Warren PaddingTM. Nothing but the best for me.

Cripes. With folk talking about confs and stuff, it’s nearly ten years since I last attended one. Health kinda puts the knackers on getting out to them but I reckon that EGX as a stinking, sweaty, cattle market was enough to put me off anything over a certain size forever.

Just hellish and I made so many friends* kicking off afterwards over what a shitty way to treat people that was.

*other one.

Bit of a rambling piece in Edge trying to find out how on Earth videogames came round to “AAA” (that’s not a criticism, I enjoy a good ramble). Nothing revelatory in there but I did appreciate it ending on recent attempts to add another A and quoting someone who said the first time they heard it they wanted to throw up in their mouth.

You don’t get this kind of piece in other mags.

I guess what this week has taught me with the run of "I have no idea any other music exists???" Taylor Swift articles is there's a whole bunch of people in music too who don't know what to do when a massively anticipated release turns out to be merely 'it's alright' and their takes go full bed shitting trying to work around it.

Videogames are not alone. Though that it's leaked into videogames news too is a pretty funny bonus.

Sorry. I have no context for the quote but in this month's Edge there's a quote from a videogame dude saying they hate achievements and what they've done to games and I don't think I've paid even the vaguest attention to them in years.

Quite enjoyed the novelty when they were invariably challenging the player to try playing in an unusual way but they don't impact the way I play a game even slightly anymore. I don't know how normal this is but I'd guess at "very"
