The first two "screens" of trying to read an article titled "We used to get excited about technology. What happened?"

THIS. THIS HAPPENED.

A browser showing an article titled "We used to get excited about technology. What happened?" The bottom half is covered by a modal that says "this is your first complimentary article".

It can often be very helpful to learn from folks in other programming communities. For example, something Rubyists know that JS/TS folks could learn is to not pay any attention to what DHH has to say.

‘Questionable Advice: “My boss says we don’t need any engineering managers. Is he right?” – charity.wtf’

Most tech cos are founded by guys who don’t understand what management is for and when they’re forced to implement a management structure they reach for authoritarianism https://charity.wtf/2024/01/05/questionable-advice-my-boss-says-we-dont-need-any-engineering-managers-is-he-right/

CodingItWrong,

@baldur @whalecoiner this is super helpful

Can anyone recommend a good, accessible (to students) reading on tech hype cycles? Not, ideally, a specific case, but a more general treatment of the phenomenon

@sts

CodingItWrong,

@inquiline @sts this is a great talk on hype cycles that gives a great metaphor of pioneers, settlers, and town planners that has really helped me think about tech adoption: https://youtu.be/9zc4DSTRGeM

Here is the blog post the speaker gets it from, but I find the talk more helpful than the post: https://blog.gardeviance.org/2012/06/pioneers-settlers-and-town-planners.html

What open git platform do folks recommend? I'm tired of us getting screwed over by tech giants so looking into moving off of GitHub. I'd considered GitLab in the past but I'm not a fan of their AI focus and transmitting data from self-hosted installations to Microsoft. What are folks' experience with codeberg?

LLMs can't "know" things.

We know this, and yet we still act like they usually do.

So which of us is really "hallucinating"?

People on LinkedIn: "I can't believe I got laid off; I was working 60-80 hours per week."

Me: "Please start believing that a company that works you 60-80 hours per week is not going to prioritize your wellbeing."

Found out someone who is using VS Code to write fiction. Talk about a novel use case.

Is there a fedi instance that has a character limit of 1? Including emoji. That seems like that would be fun / cc @cam

Reddit emailed me to let me know that they made some small updates their our Privacy Policy to make it clearer and more specific. Good to know it's just something minor and not something about the use of my data for totally new purposes that I might want to know about.

CodingItWrong,

@isagalaev yeah, this was definitely a case of me sarcastically referencing the news story instead of stating it 😅

The problem I have with the term "hallucinations" for LLMs is that it the metaphor suggests that sometimes it is not happening, but hallucinations are LLMs operating exactly the way they always do. If what they generate sometimes makes sense and corresponds to real facts, that's completely coincidental.

Do you think you could live with yourself if you were the developer who hard-coded the "Today only! 24-hour Flash Sale!" header message directly into Udemy's immutable static HTML?

I really appreciate the folks who pointed out that yyyy-mm-dd is the only sane date format and I now use it for almost everything, not just a programming context.

So often when I think of LinkedIn my brain replies "LonkedIn." It's not really a joke, but it does belittle LinkedIn, and maybe that's enough.

I love when API server CORS policies protect me from running my local frontend dev server on the wrong port number, don't you?

I asked last year and we couldn't find it, so trying again.

Years ago someone on fedi linked a long writeup about the history of an online community, growing, getting bad actors, declining, with tips about moderation.

Anyone know this post or similar ones? I'm interested to read it again.

I'm moving my prescriptions from CVS to Walgreens because CVS sends me texts and voicemails when I've denied them permission to do so. I have one last prescription there because my doctor won't move it over. Sure enough, I got a text that it was renewed.

They'll say I agreed to it since they said that last time. But I'm on the defense against it now, so there's no way I clicked to accept an agreement. It's definitely a legal loophole to abuse customers.
