I suppose I’m a left-of-center liberal who flirts w/ anarchism & libertarianism. Thr’s a lot of alt, electronic, exp’tal, & “world” music I like. I’m working on fan-fix-tion for The Handmaid’s Tale and Star Trek.

I can see it now:

January 2029, President Trump, at 82—over 10 months older than Biden is now—refuses to leave. His supporters surround the White House and storm Capitol Hill.

Trump says it’s an emergency, and thus only temporary.

The very rich and military do nothing.

His supporters surround the White House and storm the Capitol.

The generals don’t want a shoot-out at the White House as many of his supporters are armed.

What does the newly-elect do?

If it’s a “battleground state” then yes, Biden might lose it.

However, he might win it.

Young voters aren’t as liberal as you think (www.washingtonpost.com)

None of this is to claim that younger voters in general are not more to the left on most issues than their older counterparts. They are. But there is a difference between being more progressive than other voters — and progressive as a blanket characterization. As this data clearly shows, that characterization is not accurate...

Yes, it’s possible, that millions of Americans between 18 to 30 might vote for Trump.

Maybe over 10 million of them might want to see abortion banned, and borders closed.

We’ll see.

I’ve yet to see any “Gen-Z for Trump” T-shirts.

Voters between 45 and 65 year old and voters over 65 years old have the highest rate of voter turnout. In the time span from 1964 to 2004, 18-24 year olds usually had a voter turnout of 41.8%, compared to 25-44 year olds who had a turnout of 57.9%. Voters between 45 and 65 year old and voters over 65 years old have turnout rates of 69.3% and 66.6% respectively. Younger age groups are typically underrepresented in proportion; the greatest percentage of unregistered voters is in the 18-30 year old age group. People in younger age demographics are speculated to be more focused on other aspects in their life, such as college, marriage, and careers. In turn, younger demographics are less likely to learn about politics or understand the implications behind voting. Voters tend to be older, wealthier, and more educated than non-voters.

GOP legislators better do what Trump wants if they know what’s good for them.

Come on, neo-cons, kneel down and kiss his ring.

The countries with the most Fediverse servers are rich and former/current colonial powers. One of the best true barometers of the success of the Fediverse is how quickly we can turn that on its head. (sopuli.xyz)

In the end I don’t think internet users in rich powerful countries are the users most likely to benefit and invest their time into in the fediverse. They might be the ones with the most free time, money and privilege around computers which makes being on the leading edge of niche technologies far easier, but I don’t think...

What I find quite annoying is how people created these monopolies.

50 years ago, there were 3 (arguably 4) American car companies—still a de facto oligopoly, but 3 is better than 1. The Japanese and VW added to it.

Today we essentially have one search portal, Google; one social network site, Facebook; one video-hosting site, YouTube; and one micro-blogging site, Twitter/X.

If people spent perhaps 1/10th of their micro-blogging time on other sites, Twitter might not have been as attractive to Musk and his backers, but they chose ease over choice, and now they’re wailing over what he’s doing with it.

I’m off-topic.

I mostly agree with your statement. Maybe Amazon likes the internet, but probably most others in big business in the US don’t: it might account a bit for the shitty websites of many of them.

Russia has about 3.5x the manpower, and IIUC, Ukraine might start using convicts. Maybe they might use some of that aid to increase pay and maybe get their own foreigners.

The problem might not be so much the strength of the troops as much as their morale.

AFAIK, Russian troop strength might have been good in February 1917.

It will be seen that, as used, the word ‘Fascism’ is almost entirely meaningless. In conversation, of course, it is used even more wildly than in print. I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox-hunting, bull-fighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley’s broadcasts, Youth Hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I do not know what else.

Apparently Ireland’s economy is bigger than Israel’s;

and Spain is over 4x the size of Israel’s.

DMBFFF,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

True, but I wonder if the PCI of the 90% of Irish who are among the 95% richest and 95% poorest in Ireland is greater than 90% of those those in Israel proper who are among the 95% richest and 95% poorest in Israel proper.
