New plan launched to explore regenerative tourism (have your say) (www.rnz.co.nz)

The article focusses pretty heavily on local production of "sustainable aviation fuel", but the draft Tourism Environment Action Plan looks at lots of ways to make NZ tourism more sustainable. They are currently seeking public input. From MBIE:...

In addition, do we do methane capture at any landfills?

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

You commented on comparing to leaving it in the landfill, which creates methane. But if it mostly doesn't get into the atmosphere it's probably an argument for leaving it in the landfill.

I just went on a dive into the internet researching how methane capture works. I don't know why, but I kind of imagined it as a big tarpaulin over the whole thing or something. It turns out it's just a bunch of pipes into the ground that lets the methane seep into them. So I can imagine a lot still isn't captured.

I think there's some quirks here, from what I've heard other people talk about, e.g. if you are searching for a community that isn't yet federated, it won't work if you have selected to search "Communities". You have to leave it on the All setting.

So basically, no you aren't doing something wrong, Lemmy is pretty buggy and the huge increase in users has led to many new bugs being found, but first they need to focus on performance because the big instances are really struggling (there is a performance update expected next week).

We will try to keep up to date as best we can, but in the meantime we kinda just have to live with it.

With regards to logging out, I haven't had this issue but I've heard it from others. While the next update is focused on performance, they are changing how the website talks to the server so it's possible some of these issues may get resolved then.

It might be worth searching github for the issue, to see if it's been reported. There might even be more info in the issues as well.

Note that Lemmy has more than one Github repository, notably the Lemmy and Lemmy-UI ones that cover the server and website.

I was thinking the same thing! I mean I guess if you think about it. There must be 10,000 or more people licenced to do the inspections (maybe 20,000, I dunno, can't seem to find any numbers). It's not that unthinkable that one a year gets caught breaking the terms of their licence, and when that happens it makes sense that they can't trust the inspections that they've done.

I guess it's no different to people losing their drivers licence, it's just that the impact is wider.

What are the best ways to cure boredom?

I have an issue with being bored and depressed alot, i take meds but i stil feel like osmething is missing. is there a solution to deal with theses things becasue i feel constanly bored, are there any tips or sulutions to solve this? also i rant about being bored to everyone even the internet.

Self-host Lemmy (and a bunch of other stuff).

Read a book. Read another.

Learn an instrument. Youtube is helpful for this.

Start going to the gym, every day.

We have some friendly neighbourhood birds that clear them out for us (mostly). We'll just wake up one morning and there is moss and decomposed leaves lying all over the place, it took years to work out where it was coming from. I presume there are bugs or something in there that they are looking for?

Totally! It looks a lot like the Orange Guy now!

I think the suggestion is for people who made an account somewhere other than lemmy.nz, who want to find posts on lemmy.nz. We have lots of users here who made their accounts somewhere else (think about how you can make an email address anywhere and still communicate with anyone who has email).

In fact the tip @BlueEther posted can be helpful for anyone, as it will help you find content on both lemmy.nz as well as other lemmy instances with a .nz domain (such as no.lastname.nz or feddit.nz).

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Until we have a reasonable way of joining things together, I'd like to avoid duplicates. There are at least 5 other !newzealand communities on other instances, and I just don't think it's helpful to list them since none of them have posts from anyone other than the person who set them up.

If a community starts to gain some traction, we can add them to the list, but until then it probably makes sense to point people to the one that others are using.

There have been proposals to implement some way of showing the communities in a joint feed, if that gets implemented one day then that will make things easier.

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Yeah like I mentioned in the original post, Lemmy doesn't handle links nicely yet. I presume this is true even when connecting from Kbin.

If the community is on lemmy.nz, then you can probably copy the URL into Kbin search. If it's on another instance, once you click through to the lemmy.nz page for the community, under the title there is a link to the community on the home instance. Click this, then copy the URL and search. Hopefully that works.

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

How did you connect to this community to ask your question? Can you do the same thing for the others?

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Hmm, interesting! For it to show up, someone must have successfully introduced the community to kbin. Unfortunately I have not used kbin at all, so I can't help :(

Lemmy Devs - Why do the upvote and downvote numbers for a post change in front of my eyes when viewing a post?

Buggy looking behaviour observed, when I view a post on another instance or make a post on another instance then go back to viewing it, in front of my eyes, I can see massive disparities in the amount of upvotes and downvotes. Talking a post showing 600 upvotes then a few seconds later, 5 upvotes, then 40 etc

One of the main devs said in the lemmy instance admin chat that they are planning on releasing it next week.

We are not going to "debate" anything that can reasonably be considered hate speech.

Dave,

It isn't, unless you compare against USD. But USD is falling against many other currencies so I'd say it's the USD getting weaker rather than NZD getting stronger.

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

I'm not sure, but it might be to do with the Federal Reserve indicating they will add another 50bp to rates by the end of the year. But I'm no expect, I just looked at a currency graph to check USD against some major currencies.

I'm pretty sure the sale of an existing house is not counted in GDP, which is the vast majority. This is because no goods were produced and the house itself is not a service.

However, the lawyer and real estate agent fees I think are counted, as well as e.g. paying for a builder's report, registered valuation, etc.

I'm not certain on new houses, but I expect they would be included. So this could impact GDP, but it's probably minimal since most house sales are not of new builds, and also I believe new build values haven't fallen as much as others (since investor rules are different, and also the price to build sets a minimum sale value).

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

One of the other NZ Lemmy instances is having a more nature/outdoors focus, and I noticed they have a community !outdoors. This might be a good place to put that content? No content yet but I'm sure you can change that!

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

I never got into BBS, only into internet forums that were modeled after it (I presume). We got internet via dial-up in about 1998, and that's the first experience I had connecting with others on a computer.
