@DenisMeuthen@fediscience.org

Evolutionary ecologist interested in phenotypic plasticity. Junior Research Group Leader of @idealab at #bielefeld University. #evolution #ecology #plasticity #FreigeistFellow

My current research focuses on the reasons for variation in phenotypic plasticity, on the extent of transgenerational plasticity as well as on the role of plasticity in evolution.

What I miss most in mastodon is that people don't showcase many of their recent articles and discoveries compared to X. Yet, it is a fun and effective way of keeping my reading up to date. Does anyone have a trick to get around this?

@JMeunierEarwig I'd recommend to follow more users ( https://followgraph.vercel.app/ ), relevant hashtags such as and as well as general groups such as @academicchatter - I see many new papers showcased every day. Following publishers such as @ASNAmNat @pcievolbiol also helps.

New📜paper out in Aquatic Toxicology. In zebrafish, maternal exposure to the plastic additive Bisphenol S (a common replacement for BPA in many "BPA-free" products) negatively affects their male offspring. Similar to the effects of maternal estrogen exposure, male offspring hid less, decreased their shoal density in the presence of a predatory threat and reduced expression of multiple serotonin receptor genes.

A new collaboration📜paper just published in Genome Research. We observed that individuals of the Western African cichlid Benitochromis nigrodorsalis are capable of reproduction even when isolated for years. Now, by analyzing genome-wide SNPs and measuring maternal heterozygosity, we provide clear evidence for facultative selfing in this cichlid species, a potentially adaptive strategy when mating partners are absent. https://doi.org/10.1101/gr.277368.122

I will soon start again to look for another position.
Are there already some established hashtags that I could follow?
Both general academic ones and specific for and/or would be appreciated
So far I'm aware of & @academicjobs

@soller Looks interesting. Will it be so customizable that we can create tiles to start software (no live tiles) such as in the Metro look?

@manusaunders Might you elaborate what drove you to join as it is based on a new closed protocol which is not compatible with our open protocol ?

@mackuba @manusaunders Sorry, my mistake. I wasn't aware that BlueSky made its code open-source in May 2023: https://www.zdnet.com/article/bluesky-social-just-took-a-big-open-source-step-forward/

Could you share your best-known example of reproducible, correctly annotated, and commented code that you'd like everybody to use as a template when publishing their own code alongside their paper? My best attempt so far can be found here: https://zenodo.org/record/7687077

A bit of outbreak in our snail lab 🐌 made me think about other snail researchers including @DenisMeuthen

Physella (Physa) acuta is one of the most abundant freshwater snail species. They often invade aquariums of any kind!! This species is considered beneficial to keep aquariums clean by eating off organic matters.

They have a lot interesting features in behaviour, genetics and more! And they are lefty (usually snails are right-handed 🌀)

DenisMeuthen,
@DenisMeuthen@fediscience.org avatar

@snailman @YumiNakadera Physella acuta also has a new reference genome on the contig level, so it's now a suitable model system for genetic analyses https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/assembly/GCA_028476545.2
