@davidwilkins I saw this interesting car yesterday, belonging to my sister's neighbour. I think he said it was a Shrike. He wore a helmet to drive it, went out for several hours, and spent half an hour or so cleaning and polishing the bodywork when he got back.

ETA: @n8zug has solved it! The vehicle is a Trike! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorized_tricycle

It's almost time for #TheArchers Omnibus, a weekly round-up of all the desperate things the scriptwriters have had to do to map the nihilistic vortex of existential despair onto the agricultural calendar.

Which almost makes it sound exciting.

And we're off!

@wibble @thearchers Can't remember re Jamie - Mike Tucker was in that area before he left Ambridge. Who knows how they coped with recalcitrant trees in between...

@Maker_of_Things
A1 @makershour I'm Harriet, and I often read the posts on Thursday evenings, but I haven't posted before because I don't think of myself as a Maker. But I did wonder about it a few times in March, as I happened to do quite a lot of knitting and sewing that month. And this is a special week, so I am going to post this photo of the 196 rows of a scarf I knitted between Friday and Monday at Eastercon in Telford. It will probably take me weeks or months to finish!

It's time for #TheArchers Omnibus; even more so if, like me, you missed the last one.

We seem to be kicking off with a review of Tony's birthday, so it's not looking good.

Still, there may be sheep.

@wibble @thearchers Maybe Harrison could set up an artisanal tannery after he's discharged from the police?

Anyway, I think we can now chalk one up to Kate's aura detector. @thearchers

I'm not sure Natasha and Tony have thought through the impact on vegetarian customers of dead animal skins on the tea-room walls. @thearchers

@MikeFromLFE @thearchers I agree entirely with the sound-absorbing idea, which is a problem in a lot of cafes etc. (I speak as somebody whose birthday dinner had to be switched to another restaurant because when we got there one of our group found the noise migraine-triggering). But I think wall-hangings are the way to go. Bet there's someone in Ambridge who does tapestry in their spare time.

VeryAud, to TheArchers

Adil leaving to go surprise his BiL. Sounds like he is going to uncover something that will impact his sister and ensure he returns to Ambridge to be by her side to offer support.

@Malwen @VeryAud @thearchers Can't we just dump Akram on the pile of discarded husbands, along with John Mack or Metcalf, I'm a bit hazy about the surnames in Denise's family...

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@VeryAud @thearchers Yes, it sounds like "still married but living on different continents with no obvious plans to change that any time soon so not all that married".

Does anyone else reckon that Helen would have benefitted from therapy much earlier?
#TheArchers @thearchers

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@Rainbow_Worrier @HederaVulpes @thearchers Probably a good thing Henry's making an early start, then.
I do hope the nice geography teacher isn't a new love interest, though, I'm fed up with those.

VeryAud, to TheArchers

I don't think a 13 yo would understand the implications of owning land. Helen is a fool for jumping to conclusions about Rob's motives. She is the one who will instigate rivalry between 'the boys'. Natasha has the right idea.

@thearchers

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@VeryAud @thearchers At 13? I think he would.

There was a better, subtler version of this plotline when Will Grundy inherited enough money to buy a house (No. 1 The Green) and Ed Grundy didn't, simply because a distant aunt had updated her will shortly after Will was born, and forgot to do it again after Ed.

The consequences of Will being a property-owner (though until last year he usually rented out the house) and Ed having nothing have rippled through their lives ever since.

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@NAB @VeryAud @thearchers That would have been an act of extraordinary generosity, given that the legacy arrived after Emma left Will for Ed.

But it's painful when Will rants about Ed being a failure and never admits that his own status was transformed by £120,000 which he did nothing at all to earn.

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@NAB @VeryAud @thearchers I can imagine circumstances in which I hope I would do that, but I haven't been through the sexual-betrayal-by-sibling-and-spouse experience.

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@NAB @VeryAud @thearchers And then rub it in at every opportunity for the rest of their lives.

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@NAB @VeryAud @thearchers I'm talking about Will. If he were sharper, he might have considered that, but I'm sure he didn't.

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@BashStKid @VeryAud @thearchers Yes, and that was addressed - with Paul getting outraged on her behalf when he realised the situation on her birthday.
And I'm not sure why it's so. I don't remember any suggestion that Nigel's sister (Camilla?) might have a grievance, but that was an earlier era. You'd think Nigel would consider how to be fair to Lily, especially as Elizabeth made a big fuss about wanting a share in Brookfield.
Is there an entail prescribing male heirs? Do entails still exist?

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@NAB @BashStKid @VeryAud @thearchers Unless Freddie really is transformed by working at the abattoir, I think his future depends on marrying a capable manager. The irony is that Lily is probably better equipped to run Lower Loxley, but whether she'd want to do so is another matter. (I'm still annoyed that she didn't complete her degree at Manchester. The Archers is very bad at allowing characters to go to university. Phoebe managed it, I think Roy went somewhere very local. Will Brad?)

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@BashStKid @NAB @VeryAud @thearchers Yeah, but they're already pushing the "I don't want to go away and be separated from Mia" line.

HarrietMonkhouse,
@HarrietMonkhouse@mcr.wtf avatar

@BashStKid @NAB @VeryAud @thearchers But, having established characters they want to keep in the show, we have to abandon realism in order to prevent their leaving the village for most of the next three years (and, indeed, the rest of their lives, because they would have so many more opportunities somewhere else).

    @wcow @junesim63 @thearchers Denise was taking so long to admit her marriage was in trouble I was beginning to wonder if it was all a red herring and the person whom Alastair has to marry by next Halloween would turn out to be Adil's sister Azra.

    Historians know a fair bit about Herod the Great, the king of Judea at the time of Jesus’ birth.

    And yes, Herod’s sinister reputation as a tyrant was probably well deserved. It made him the perfect villain for Matthew to set up as a parallel to Pharaoh.

    @TheConversationUS @histodons Many years since I read a book on the Herod family, but my hazy memory says that the really interesting character was H the G's father Antipater, who manoeuvred them into royalty in the first place. Got on very well with Mark Antony and very badly with Cleopatra...
