Even musk paying 30% in taxes is such a misnomer too. He accrued like 80 billion in assets during that time and just borrows money tax-free based off that imaginary asset valuation and can essentially have unlimited tax-free money as his assets appreciate…

What is with Steam's shading cache updates nowadays? (feddit.nl)

For the past few months or so, steam precaching has been out of control. I have to download between 10 and 30 GB of shader precache data per day. That is extremely ridiculous. Steam’s shader caches are quite often almost as large as the game itself. For example: the image here is a game that is ~7GB for the full game,...

They can’t. That would break the illusion of being an “enlightened centrist.”

I.E. votes right wing, sees themselves as slightly more moderate, but sympathizer and defender of the far right and Nazis.

Or one of the many foreign troll farms found to be pushing the “enlightened centrist” narrative.

Turns out, all of the worst destroyers of our environment and humans all knew exactly what they were doing and went ahead anyway. Exxon had internal documents leaked, 3M, shell, gas industry giants, and then there are probably dozens more whose old internal documents haven’t been leaked.

0 consequences at all.

There were no regulations on any of this, this was “the free market.” Companies will wilfully destroy the environment, technology to fix their failings, and literally humans themselves for more quarterly profit.

Well this article is pretty disingenuous…

  1. The distribution “managed by a single person” depends on hundreds of people working on different sofware to keep up. It’s not “one person doing better than the thousands of Microsoft employees combined” implication they are pushing
  2. Windows 11 beat the linux distros by up to 20% in 1% lows which are argued as much more important by most tech reviewers. It wasn’t consistant at all which means that there was a giant margin of error.

I love linux and linux gaming has gotten radically better, but I am tired of tech “journalism” literally just cherrypicking, misleading, clickbait trash.

Nightshade - A new data poisoning tool lets artists fight back against generative AI (lemmy.world)

The tool, called Nightshade, messes up training data in ways that could cause serious damage to image-generating AI models. Is intended as a way to fight back against AI companies that use artists’ work to train their models without the creator’s permission....

I’m interested to know how they fool the AI while keeping it invisible to the human eye. Do they make additional layers? Do they change every nth pixel? Is every poisoning associated with another poisoned object? (Will a dog always be poisoned towards a cat?, etc…)

Interesting, but a bit hard to understand.

Disney is gouging customers with a near doubling of subscription costs. (sh.itjust.works)

Disney is raking its customers over the coals with a 75% price hike for their annual subscription (originally $80.) People wonder why piracy is on the rise.Multiple commenters are saying I’m off base about the 75% price increase. My payment less than a year ago was $79.99. Here’s the proof.

ECC RAM is only necessary for people doing financial-related work.

If a video has a bitflip that is not corrected in software, ooooo 1 pixel will be a slightly different shade or hue or one subtitle letter will be wrong worst case.

Billing, payment processing, virtual currency storage, a flipped bit could be thousands of dollars, but those systems will have multiple verifiable redundancies in place, unlike the 90s when people like to quote that ECC RAM is essential.

Also 100% uptime servers like enterprise storage servers where customer data integrity is high priority.

I have yet to see a single shred of evidence that a memory bit flipping has caused any problems past 2008 or so. Maybe another person has found some case where it has, but when I was researching for my own server, I couldn’t find a single one.

Nearly every problem (1 million times more likely) is caused by software instability and bugs, with some being due to hard drive bit rot or hardware failures which ECC won’t fix anyway.

China is literally a authoritarian state capitalist now lol. They are pretty much fascist. They fit nearly every definition of fascism.

  • Dictatorship
  • Militaristic
  • Expansionism
  • Ethnic cleansling (genocide) coming from a belief of a perceived intrinsic good of a nation/race (Tibetan people, Sichuan, Uyghurs)
  • capitalist “free market” economy until the company hits a certain size/influence and direction can be influenced by dictator’s party
  • Very little regulation, also very little IP regulation which lowers the barrier to entry of an industry

They are communist only by name just like Stalin’s regime was. Hell, the Nazi’s called themselves the socialist party lol. Communists should be looking at them as what NOT to do because they “devolved” into capitalism. It is hard or impossible for the upper class to resist the infinite looking growth and the personal riches that capitalism provides while maintaining authoritarianism.

Laos is slowly going the same way. Vietnam is similar if I remember right.

Communism only seems to have stayed communism in Cuba, but it seems to be working well for them as far as education, healthcare, and CoL. Just like most systems there was a very violent and bloody road to get there.

People are always greedy and always want more. Communism doesn’t allow them to have more and more and so it usually falls apart. Probably will only ever work in tiny communities or “tribes.”

This, my friends, is why the speculative stock market and company valuations is complete and utter bullshit.

It literally has 0 basis in reality. It has only to do with how good at marketing the company and its exec board is to shareholders and hedge funds.

Bezos pledged 40 billion (maybe 20, can’t remember) I believe in 2019.

To date he has actually donated less than $200 million of it IIRC to any climate-related funds.

It’s just a bold face lie, not even taking his own charity scams into account.

Edit: also side rant: I have gotten a lot of wallstreetbets armchair investors in the past saying “b-b-but muh liquid vs assets, he would crash amazon stock.”

Bezos has liquidated a minimum of $12 billion per year without even a slight blip in amazon stock. PLENTY to fulfil his pledge. People don’t understand the scale of sold shares. The stock market is completely speculative bs. If he liquidated every stock of amazon in a short time after an anouncement like this, investors would absolutely speculate that it would recover, the price would lower for a week or so while every hedge fund in existence rushes to buy every single stock that they have and voila, it would magically recover within a month and bozo would not be a complete lying scumbag. It would probably cause him to be audited though which is every bilionaire’s nightmare because they have all done such shady things and dodges so many taxes for so many years. At least if the IRS had any balls.

I mean, China fucking sucks and is a shit authoritarian statist government but let’s not pretend America hasn’t done similar things.

Ever heard the stories of how America won the right to unions?

  • Columbine Mine Massacre
  • Ludlow Massacre
  • Thibodaux Massacre
  • Battle of Blair Mountain
  • Herrin Massacre

Hundreds of people killed in total because they were protesting.

The difference in outcome is that back then the technology was more of a level playing field.

fernandolins, to linux

I would like to help an open-source project with UI design and UX design. I have over 18 years of experience in the field and have worked with desktop and mobile software on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Windows Mobile/Windows Phone. Unfortunately my knowledge of Linux is very limited but I'm eager to learn. Could you help me find a project? @thelinuxEXP @linux @macrumors @windowscentral @windows

JustEnoughDucks,

I think that one of the projects that needs it the most right now, a complete overhaul, is FreeCAD.

It needs a good, competent UX designer. Nothing has changed UX wise for like 6 years. Everyone who begins to use it quits saying that it is the biggest hurdle.

It is literally the only real classical FOSS CAD software and they have no UX designer as far as I know.
