Disco Elysium is a fantastic one. There are an insane amount of choices that shape how you go about the investigation of the hanged man and ultimately what happens beyond that investigation. Choices of who to side with, how to side (openly or playing multiple sides, etc.), choices that ultimately define what kind of detective you are (by-the-book boring, superstar douchebag, violent tough guy, Sherlock Holmes-esque genius, etc., including my favorite: Twin Peaks Lynchian detective that bases their decisions off of dreams, intuition and imaginary conversations with the dead body), and even how failing or succeeding at something can lead to progress in very different ways. If you fail to hit that person you tried to punch, or miss that shot with your gun, or utterly fail to convince someone to help you, you progress through in very different ways so that failing your way to the truth is just as satisfying and entertaining as succeeding your checks to get there.

And of course Fallout: New Vegas. Whether you choose to support the New California Republic, Caesar’s Legion, Mr. House, or a truly independent New Vegas, none of them are perfect. Each succeeds in an ideal society in some ways but completely fails at others, leaving you to decide which imperfect system you feel is the right one for the world instead of shoving an obvious answer in your face.

The premiere episode where they try to survive on minimum wage is still one of the best day-to-day documentations of the struggle and that was almost 20 years ago, well before the price gouging of today. I wish it had as much impact as Supersize Me which actually succeeded at putting pressure on McDonald’s to make changes.

My (new) hope is that in the parallel universe version they didn’t do the special edition re-releases and kept in the original Mos Eisley Cantina scene.

Remember friends, Hana shot first!

This is my yearly reminder that I still haven’t watched Melancholia (2011) and that I should at some point.

Co-Dependent’s Day (Season 15, Episode 15 aka Episode 328):

A visit to the George Lucas-esque Cosmic Wars Ranch, Marge and Homer get drunk and toss around Cosmic Wars creator Randall Curtis like a football.

I finally got one!

Part One was available on Max about three months after the Blu-Ray release for it (Part One had digital copies released Jan 9 and physical versions released Jan 23, with Max getting it on about April 26).

I really wish they’d get specific about streaming dates but it does seem like Max is consistently getting this kind of stuff about three months after their initial release for purchase dates.

COURIER: “That right there (pointing at the platinum chip) is the mail. Now let’s talk about the mail. Can we talk about the mail, please, Boone? I’ve been dying to talk about the mail with you all day, OK? “Robert House,” this name keeps coming up over and over again. Every day Robert’s mail is getting sent back to me. Robert House! Robert House! I look in the mail, and this whole box is Robert House! So I say to myself, “I gotta find this guy! I gotta go up to his office and put his mail in the guy’s goddamn hands! Otherwise, he’s never going to get it and he’s going to keep coming back down here.” So I go up to Robert’s office and what do I find out, Boone? What do I find out?! There is no Robert House. The man does not exist, okay? So I decide, “Oh shit, buddy, I gotta dig a little deeper.” There’s no Robert House? You gotta be kidding me! I got boxes full of Robert! All right. So I start marchin’ my way down to Jane in HR and I knock on her door and I say, “Jane! Jane! I gotta talk to you about Robert.” And when I open the door what do I find? There’s not a single goddamn desk in that office! There…is…no…Jane in HR. Boone, half the employees in this building have been made up. This office is a goddamn ghost town.”

Boone: OK, Courier I’m going to have to stop you right there. Not only do all of these people exist, but they’ve been asking for their mail on a daily basis. It’s all they’re talking about up there. Jesus Christ, dude, we are going to lose our jobs.

That’s Blockoland, baby! Homer does an impression of a robot taking command of humans, then moves to the second mirror pictured here and does the same impression except as a washing machine taking command of humans.

The episode is Season 12, Episode 15 (Hungry Hungry Homer). The visit to Blockoland is just to kick off the plot starting with a missing piece in the Blocko set Lisa got, which leads to Homer demanding the missing piece be provided and sends him on a crusade to stick up for the little guy all around town. He finds out the Springfield Isotopes are moving to Albuquerque, but is unable to convince anyone of it without proof. This leads to him chaining himself outside the baseball stadium and going on a hunger strike until management admits the truth, but draws such a crowd that management relocates the pole inside the stadium and turns him into a gimmick known as “Hungry Hungry Homer” until a hot dog topped with evidence saves the day.

Woohoo! A lot of Simpsons episodes are still intact in my memory but I do think I only remember this one so well because of the TIL post years ago that went over how the real life Albuquerque Isotopes were inspired by this episode.

LemmySoloHer,
@LemmySoloHer@lemmy.world avatar

That’s it! That’s why the episode stuck with me because of the TIL post about this! (And that I do the washing machine impression when I’m doing laundry every now and then).

It is common knowledge, I merely guessed they used that specific hunting strategy over other “food hacks” because this is literally a greentext community.

LemmySoloHer,
@LemmySoloHer@lemmy.world avatar

They’re probably referencing another greentext from the perspective of a fast sprinting Elk that can’t escape the long-distance persistence endurance of a bipedal human hunter:

Meowth has such a tragic backstory of abandonment, heartbreak, rejection and belonging. Abandoned as a kitten, learned to walk on two legs to impress Meowzie only to be outcast for it, learned to talk but realized learning to talk and walk instead of training has made him weak and unskilled in battles, rejected by both other Meowths and humans for being a “freak” that is too different from either group, finally finding acceptance and a place with Jesse and James.

I think you’re right that his job and his co-workers are what keep him going without any need for extra manipulation, although his massive jealousy of Giovanni’s Persian fueled by his insecurity of never being able to be seen as such a prized Pokemon are a part of that drive.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of Darths, I will fear no evil: for Obi-Wan art with me!

Using the blue and yellow pushpins to put this up is the kind of attention to detail that makes someone Overseer material. Keep up the good work, vault dweller.

In Stardew Valley one of the questions the game asks during character creation is “what is your favorite thing?” where you can type anything you deem fit for you (and your character). Without knowing why it asks this (or completely knowing why) means that an honest answer like “tits” can happen organically or specifically just for the chuckles.

Throughout the game, every time you find a Stardrop that increases your total energy bar, you are reminded of whatever favorite thing you entered at the start of the game.

This is the extreme end of things but nearly every Zack Snyder movie, extreme because it specifically goes heavy on editing saturation, contrast, etc., that takes away the aspects of realism for this look to instead make it stylized in an exaggerated way on purpose.

Joker (2019) plays with this look.

A lot of noir-esque stuff will use this kind of look to varying degrees too. Dark City (1998), and a lot of the future/neo-noirs will do this even when bright cyberpunk lights are present. Zone 414 (2021) is another one. Live by Night (2016) uses it during the criminal activity scenes to contrast against the brighter, roaring world of the rich.

I think there are a lot of better examples out there that I’m just not thinking of at the moment.

Edit: Adding Prisoners (2013), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Children of Men (2006), and Taxi Driver (1976) to the list.

All my dress shirts have buttons at the wrists but man did I still want a pair of pig cufflinks when I was younger.

Any recommendations for reliable storage? I need new drives but I’ve put off buying any for years with all the bad reviews and counterfeit products making me weary of any deal that seems too reasonable or model with known issues.
