Agreed. I blame Crash Bandicoot for this one.

Like ‘Susie’, which according to the rest of this thread, puts me in the minority

It’s an RPG, of course it does! Particularly if you decide to give your character the ‘Bloody Mess’ perk, which causes every enemy to violently and horrifically explode in a shower of miscellaneous chunks.

I’d say try one of the older Tekkens, 2-3 or Tag Tournament. They feel a lot better and punchier to me.

Is the new Fallout TV show depressing?

I get pretty easy depressed watching TV shows with a depressing tone or a lot of character deaths or that. If its more in the background its generally fine, but things like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and The Boys are a lot for the moment. How does the new Fallout show compare?...

I’m a little confused, why is this news? They’re updating their site design?

The replies don’t help much, either, unless they’re being ironically hyperbolic…

Small history lesson for those interested: the reason we didn’t see much of this sort of thing is because Namco actually had it patented, up until late 2015. Originally, you could play Galaxian while you waited for Ridge Racer to load! (At the expense of everyone else being able to have little loading screen games…)

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It’s difficult to find where to even download the thing, particularly if you’re looking for older versions

In my experience, meetings are 90% nonsense and usually could have been summarised in a single email.

Community! It’s still streets ahead.

Trying?? Coined and minted. Been there, coined that!

You are going to be trapped in a room for 12 hours with a mid 2000s office desktop with no internet connection and an external hard drive; what are you putting on the hard drive?

I’ve got some DOOM WADs I have been meaning to play so I would probably grab Trench Foot, Total Chaos, and the sequel to Ashes 2063, Ashes: Afterglow with a portable install of GZDoom to play them....

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Mid-2000s? SC3K would run easily, I’d have thought. SC4, on the other hand…

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I think they’re referring more to the aspect ratio - watching a 16:9 film on a 4:3 display isn’t the most optimal method, to put it charitably

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

If it’s an office desktop, we’re probably talking a low-end Intel Pentium with 256MB RAM. If there is a discrete graphics card, it’ll be one of those ultra-basic ones, but chances are it’ll be onboard only. There’s probably a CD-ROM drive (DVD drives were still quite expensive!) and USB 2.0.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Could spend your 12 hours making it run! Plenty of tinkering opportunity there :D

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Must’ve been an office with money, then…

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

That’s pretty impressive. I’m especially surprised about the 8GB RAM considering that was a lot even in the early 2010s.

Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability. (lemmy.world)

Ignoring the lack of updates if the game is buggy, games back then were also more focused on quality and make gamers replay the game with unlockable features based on skills, not money. I can’t count the number of times I played Metal Gear Solid games over and over to unlock new features playing the hardest difficulty and with...

Counterpoint: budget re-releases of games (e.g. ‘Platinum’ on PlayStation) were often an opportunity to fix bugs, or sometimes even add new features. A few examples:

  • Space Invaders 1500 was a re-release of Space Invaders 2000, with a few new game modes.
  • Spyro: Year of the Dragon’s ‘Greatest Hits’ release added a bunch of music that was missing in the original release.
  • Ridge Racer Type 4 came with a disc containing an updated version of the first Ridge Racer, which ran at 60fps.
  • Super Mario 64’s ‘Shindou Edition’ added rumble pak support, as well as fixing a whole bunch of bugs (famously, the backwards long jump).

Those are just off the top of my head. I’m certain there are more re-releases that represent the true ‘final’ version of a game.

I told my mum once that I hate washing the dishes.

“Just wash up!” was the response. Yeah, cheers, mum. Didn’t think of that one.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yes, I have a 2008-era build running it. It’s glorious. Not really many fixes other than installing all the updates up to 2019, and making sure to manually run SSD tools to trim my drive.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Sounds alright to me… Might have to go to cheese.town afterwards, though.

LunarLoony,

On launch, Spyro: Reignited Trilogy had a level you couldn’t complete unless you changed the settings to lock it to 30fps. It’s probably been patched by now, but was that ever infuriating.

Only because the Voodoo couldn’t do 2D at all - it had a passthrough on the back, so you’d connect your 2D-capable graphics card to it.

Got a new windows 98 gaming PC, and boi she's huge!! (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I’ve gotten really interested in old Computers since I got my Commodore PET 2 months ago, so to play some good ol MS Train Simulator and Stronghold 2, I got this massive beauty. Here is a little size comparison between it and my main PC https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/pictrs/image/3b050b45-42bf-4f1b-b3c0-799795c76389.jpeg

Depends which version you have - there is at least one official Win98 release that had a bootable CD.
