@protonprivacy was that e-mail provided by proton? Was this person an actual terrorist? Because what I see in the press doesn’t mention acts of terror, but of information leakage, which is one of the reasons why one would use your services, either to direct action groups or the press… how do you evaluate these cases? How do you choose who you snitch on?

I wish all of these “don’t use Kagi” posts would say what they think is ethically better. Kagi’s CEO is absolute child, but I fail to see how any of the alternatives are an ethical improvement. Going back to Google is like shopping at Walmart because the guy a the local bodega is a dick. What’s the actual point?

Mushi,

@jacob duck duck go has generally served me well enough, but have you tried stract.com?

Mushi,
@Mushi@col.social avatar

@jacob @bluGill I mean stract aspires to be a solid open source project, and the weird little filters it has make it kind of interesting

Mushi,
@Mushi@col.social avatar

@jacob @bluGill also, can you point me to the bing thing? All I found was a Tom’s guide article on the browser

Mushi,
@Mushi@col.social avatar

@bluGill @jacob what I understand is that DDG sources searches from the bing, yahoo, yandex, wolfram alpha APIs as well as their own web crawler, so why is it especially concerning that they use bing and not so much that they use BOSS, or why attribute their getting better exclusively on bing…

The alternative, to help build stract doesn’t seem too outlandish either, a nice chance to lay strong ethical foundations on the thing, no?

So because I have visible tattoos and I speak the equivalent of a 10 year old’s Indonesian, and all my friends here are Chinese Surabayans, people basically read me as ‘dumb ass local kid who went to Singapore or the US to study and now can’t speak properly’, but maybe that’s better than being coded as a foreigner

Mushi,
@Mushi@col.social avatar

@skinnylatte I’m learning Chinese and have been running into the whole colonialist dimension of it, a friend who’s currently directing a queer movie in Taiwan called attention to me using simplified instead of traditional, could I get by with mandarin in Indonesia? What would that say culturally about me to a native? Is it proper?

@skinnylatte thanks, just wanted to be aware

Hola!
Ando buscando trabajo en productos digitales con enfoque ético.
Aparte de lo que dice mi cv, fui cofundador del partido pirata de Colombia ( duró poco, nos achacaron la operación andrómeda)
Hi!
I’m currently looking for a digital product job with a focus on ethics.
Apart from what is listed on my cv I also cofounder the (short lived) Colombian pirate party.

I am on subs like /r/Frugal and /r/personalfinance and I feel like everyone needs to examine their relationship with money.

There’s stuff like ‘I am so frugal I go to a food bank to take food even though I have a good job’ or ‘I want to eat only rice and beans because I grew up poor and can’t allow myself anything’ to ‘how bad is it if I get a free mattress and it’s full of bed bugs is it worth the savings’. Then ‘I moved to a cheap city, I have no friends, I hate myself but yay I own a house’

@skinnylatte I think a lot of it is American culture in itself, which is very goal and consumer oriented, it’s always about “getting” things instead of “living” things or conversing with things. Even though I’m an over educated, privileged person in South America, that is something I always find cringey of the tourists, free spirit people that pass through here, their experience is still essentially extractivist

Remember how yesterday I said my fave bánh mì spot in the Tenderloin is at a place that’s more like a Vietnamese senior community center, that I’m not sure I can recommend coz it’s hard to order without Vietnamese?

This is what it looks like.

I love this place.

@skinnylatte how would one day “ no meat” in Vietnamese? Would they be offended?

@skinnylatte so cool, I’ll also be making the 老面,you recommended, I’m in Colombia right now so the temperature and timing should be the same

I get into this absolute rut the week or two before I go back to Singapore / Malaysia / Indonesia where nothing tastes good and nothing can be possibly as delicious as the food from that part of the world (even the food I make) and I’d honestly rather cry and starve that I’m not there yet.

I feel like only people who come from tasty countries understand

Mushi,
@Mushi@col.social avatar

@skinnylatte completely agree, I haven’t been in the states in more than 10 years and one of my main reasons is that I remember food tasting dull

Mushi,
@Mushi@col.social avatar

@skinnylatte I don’t mean cuisine, I just feel like somehow, in the tropics, the same food tastes “more”. Like a tomato will have more flavor, cheese will have more flavor , etc
