Some parts of the Mastodon community are hostile towards VC Funding, AI, and cryptocurrency, particularly because of their entanglement with enshittification and hype cycles. These people are worried that this relationship will lead Mastodon down an unhealthy path that prioritizes the wrong things. It’s a totally understandable concern, but it’s important to remember the mission and purpose of Mastodon’s US entity: to manage and raise donations in the United States. This is not an executive department making decisions for the Mastodon project, and they aren’t shareholders expecting to make some kind of financial returns. A healthy board requires a diverse set of opinions and experiences that educate the real decision-makers so they can get multiple perspectives on problems they need to solve. It seems like this board’s variety of backgrounds has been set up to do exactly that.

…This really doesn’t soothe my concerns at all! Actually, up until right now, I hadn’t even been paying enough attention to have concerns. So… if anything, this article has inspired concerns I didn’t already have.

It’s like if the server at a restaurant came up to you and said “now I know what you’re thinking… we did in fact recently hire some cannibals. But they only work in the business office, not the kitchen!”

MxRemy,

I realllyyyy like Jerboa, but the only thing i have to compare it to is the web interface. I’ve never tried the other apps.

MxRemy,

Seconding this rec, seems like a good fit

MxRemy,

I’ve been wondering this too, thanks!

Lemmy.one profile photos and community photos are broken

Scroll through Local here and you will see. Communities and users that are local to this Lemmy.one have a black box for a photo. Viewing the profile/community from another instance displays the black box as well. It seems that users who have not set a custom profile picture just have a default Lemmy lemur icon, and that displays...

MxRemy,

Just tried re-uploading mine and ran into the same issue.

Trying to find a song about being wedgied

When I was a kid, like a real little kid, I remember having this one song I liked a lot about a guy trying to deal with getting wedgies at school. I remember almost nothing about it now, other than the guy eventually finds that Fruit of the Loom brand underwear has stretchy enough elastic to make the wedges painless. (This song...

MxRemy,

I know it’s not this, I know… but is it this?

MxRemy,

Coconut and honey? Oh no, that one TikTok lady is gonna be so sad…

I was in favor of this until I started reading Marta Russell. She lays out the history of using the concept of assisted dying to do things like get rid of people with disabilities, increase profits for hospitals, decrease funding for home nurses, convince people who are no longer productive that they shouldn’t live anymore, etc etc. It seems like a good idea on paper, because bodily autonomy and stuff, but capitalist ghouls coerce people into it.

Is the Podcast 2.0 standard entirely bullshit?

Hopefully this is a reasonable community for this question. Podcast 2.0 seems to have some neat features, like potential activitypub integration, commenting, chapters, closed captioning, etc. I would love all that stuff in a podcatcher. But then it also seems all tangled up in crypto BS! I can’t hardly search anything about it...

MxRemy,

Encampments lol.

MxRemy,

Whoaaaa hell yeah! Is there like a directory of these happening? I had no idea there was one so close by

MxRemy,

I’ve got one! Obscure textile crafts.

There are knitting/crochet communities of course, but all the super niche ones like ply-split braiding or smocking are too rare to warrant a whole community to themselves. On reddit there was a defunct sub called bistitchual, both for all obscure fibercrafts and for combinations of unrelated fibercrafts in one work. I wish we had it here.

Obscure screw added so appliance cannot be disassembled (lemmy.world)

Basic blender went bad (motor ran but spindle wasn’t rotating). I wanted to disassemble to see if it could be repaired. Three of the four screws were Phillips head. I had to cut the casing open in order to discover why I couldn’t unscrew the fourth. It was a slotted spanner.

MxRemy,

My library has a lendable “Ultimate Screwdriver Kit” that has every bit size and type I’ve ever heard of, security Torx, pentalobe, oval, gamebit, spanner, etc etc. Also a bunch of different styles of bit holder, and a bunch of attachments like angle adapters, depth setters, torque limiters, etc. Only tangentially relevant I guess… but if you run into a problem like this again, check your local library to potentially avoid having to buy obscure bits online!

MxRemy,

As I vaguely understand it, human milk lacks some specific kinda proteins required to form milk cheese? There’s always a way somehow though

MxRemy,

Omg I’m sorry, operating on very little sleep here lol. You can’t make CHEESE from human milk, is what I meant…

EDIT: Googled it, apparently human milk has too little protein in general, and specifically not enough casein.

MxRemy,

I’ve never thought about it until just now, but… honestly I don’t really feel like I’ve had much support? Mostly just my boyfriend, who holds me when I’m sobbing from dysphoria. That’s like super important to me but it’s also all he can really do

MxRemy,

A confederation of autonomous zones run horizontally under anarchist principles, a la Rojava, the Makhnovshchina, Catalonia, etc etc. Presumably for many types of collapse, there’d be a gradual period where the government just cuts off services to increasingly populated areas and abandons them. Autonomous zones like these could spring up to fill the void, and eventually be better than what they’re replacing.
