I just—for the umptieth time—got yet another message from a reader complaining about me using the word 'corn' in HILD and MENEWOOD and explaining kindly that it didn't reach Britain until sometime after Columbus and then the Spanish visited North America. I might have to start including a line in the Author's Note: 'Corn' is the generic term for a community's most important grain. UK 'corn' = wheat. US 'corn' = maize. I'm guessing pre-Rome Britons' 'corn' was barley.

Menewood is an epic literary speculative novel of character set 1400 years ago and stuffed with people of every persuasion. If you want to nominate it for an award, any award, you have my blessing. I won't argue.

The second novel about Hild of Whitby MENEWOOD was ublished 3 October. It's a big book. Why? And what's in it? And how come it's so very beautiful?

MENEWOOD is out in 15 days (!) so I'm starting to gear up: updating my Events page, writing about research into bynames, taking Deep Dives into immersive prose, and more.

@weirdwriter Thank you! I do need help. Maybe too three basic tips that would be helpful to someone coming from Twitter and Bluesky?

When I write, landscape is the key to everything. Especially when I'm writing about the early seventh century. For MENEWOOD I had to figure out exactly where Elmet was. Because if people are going to fight and die over territory it matters where that territory is. For that, I had to go back in time and start from the basics: what did the coastline look like 1400 years ago?

Here's a rough proof-of-concept animation I built of Britain now vs. Britain in Hild's time. Wow: Really different!

I'm new here. So far my handful of posts have been automatic links to my blog posts. But the Elephant Bot just suggested I introduce myself.

So: I'm Nicola, a writer (novels mostly), fighter, kitty wrangler, scholar, and queer crip. The most recent novel is SPEAR, a "queer Arthurian masterpiece for the modern age," and a new one, MENEWOOD, sequel to HILD, coming 3 October, 2023.
