Was so close to starting off this session with an 8 minute mile, but couldn’t hang around the .75 mile mark. Phew.

The fartleks afterward definitely pushed me.

@heyfluxay had to google fartleks, lol

How long has it been since your last subway ride?

@evan subway specifically? Last time I was in Montreal for Dreamhack, which I think was 2019. However, if you mean mass commute rail, then yesterday.

@heyfluxay WFH and pizza, what a day that would be

But damn could I go for some pizza right meow.

Passkeys were hot last year, don’t seem to be catching on, here’s one view of why that is. Dark and sobering but convincing: https://fy.blackhats.net.au/blog/2024-04-26-passkeys-a-shattered-dream/

@timbray I'll admit that I have a half dozen articles open in my browser tabs from the last 12 months, and I still don't grok what supposed to do/expect as end user through my cycle of new devices, new services, credential changes, etc....

Pet peeve: when YouTubers say that “old” video games are better because developers had to work within limitations.

Dude, developers are always working within limitations. Even now. Literally every year of computing history developers have been contending with limitations.

OldManToast,
@OldManToast@cosocial.ca avatar

@atomicpoet I do sometimes wonder if games were released in better launch states before patching was a thing. Sure, they weren't as complex, but GameCube had banger after banger, all unpatchable, so what the state of the game at launch was what you had.

I'm not saying this is always true, and nostalgia does weigh heavily, but I do think about that sometimes

Fanatical just released its latest cheap “Build Your Own Bundle” in which you can buy 10 games for C$6.79.

Many games are already sold out, so you only got 16 games to choose from. I own most of these titles – which is why I’m not buying this bundle today. Most of the games aren’t that amazing, but here’s the ones that are worth buying:

  • Whispering Willows - a 2D adventure game with gamepad support
  • Unity of Command Bundle - a World War II-themed turn-based tactical RPG. The bundle includes two additional DLC.
  • Valfaris a heavy metal-themed 2D run-and-gun platformer with pixel art. Has gamepad support.
  • Space Rangers HD: A World Apart - a space-themed open world RPG with arcade elements. It’s playable on Steam Deck.
  • 12 is Better Than 6 - a Western-themed top-down shooter with hand drawn graphics. Has gamepad support. Playable on Steam Deck.

These are the five games worth getting.

@atomicpoet Interesting, what are your thoughts on the artificial scarcity of 'sold out' digital games?

OldManToast,
@OldManToast@cosocial.ca avatar

@atomicpoet oh i thought this was a first party/publisher sale. I didn't realize they're resellers who would have a finite inventory

OldManToast,
@OldManToast@cosocial.ca avatar

@atomicpoet i used to subscribe to the humble bundle annually for about 2 or 3 years back in my PC gaming days, good times :)

For a long time, I’m known about Thief: The Dark Project – even seen footage – but I’ve never played it.

Today, I finally played it. And you know what? I now understand why this is considered one of the greatest PC games of all time.

But I also can’t believe this was made by Looking Glass Studios, the same developers who brought us System Shock and Ultima Underworld. For such a short-lived company, what a track record!

I hope some day that someone will re-make this game much like they did with System Shock. As much as I like this game, the max resolution is 800x600, and I haven’t been able to find any mods to upscale it.

Still, this is definitely a classic, and it’s shocking that Thief has never been ported to consoles.

OldManToast,

@evan Now stick with me here... it may not be intuitive, but I nominate "You're so Vain" by Carly Simon simply based on the super appropriate line:
"Then you flew your lear jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun"

Is Socratic irony a good way to engage in conversation?

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Socratic_irony

OldManToast,
@OldManToast@cosocial.ca avatar

@evan it may not be a great way to engage in your first introduction to someone, but if it's someone you already know, or work with and have a generally good relationship with, then sure. The worse (or weaker) the relationship is, I think the less likely it's going to be received well.
