PalePimp,

@thendrix @boilingsteam Corporations are literally employment cancer. When you work for a subsidiary part of a corporation you get told one thing, but the corporation has other objectives altogether and they will drop the newly acquired company like a broken toy once it has served its purpose.

I once worked for a company (E) that got bought by a large corp (T), while telling everybody publicly it was now a solid arm of the corporation which intends to grow in the areas (E) specialized, (E) wasn't perfect, but were making tons of money and had greater potential.

However it was all a stock market plot to boast the sales of another company (S) that was part of the corporation but couldn't compete in their sector, to make (S) look great on the stock market.

(E) Was forced to cancel all contracts with the competitors of (S) who all provided a much better service to (E) and go exclusively with (S), (S) Took years to get to the level of their competitors and (E) struggled technically to adapt to the limitations of (S).

Eventually (E) made the transition to use (S) services and that worked as planned, two years later (S) was the king of the hill thanks to the boost of (E) only using them as provider and (S)'s competitors not having the sales from (E).

Once mission was accomplished (E) was gutted, then sold to (M) who eventually closed down the company the moment the employment laws permitted it. Yes M is Microsoft.

PalePimp,

@thendrix @boilingsteam Yeah I agree that is what they will do, they are a one or two trick ponies, when the usual doesn't work (often) and they don't make any money at least a competitor's can't use the IP either. That is how these people think.

Corporations have been a complete cancer for the gaming industry (to any industry really, check pharma or the food industry), the role of MS has been specially malignant, they pioneered micro transactions, DLC abuse, made FOMO the norm and paying for being able to play online... destroyed open standards, etc. Sony, Nintendo and Sega directly responsible for buying small studios en mass and then burying them in the 90's and early 2000's via exorbitant publishing fees. UBI, EA, Activision, etc responsible for the inflation of game budgets and instituting a culture of never ending sequels and extinction of originality. And they all happily contributed to the worsening of working conditions through the industry.

If you told me a few years back we'd have a good (but still work in progress) open source Nvidia stack on Linux I'd think you need to make up a better lie, but here we are https://www.collabora.com/news-and-blog/news-and-events/nvk-is-now-ready-for-prime-time.html

So just tried to make a BlueSky account and I was fairly clear that I didn't want any bullshit post in my default feed... then I start, and the feed is replaced by "Discover Feed" by default, showing tons of political posts I never wanted to see in the first place. After deactivating the "Discover Feed" in the settings, it still shows up.

What a complete piece of crap. Even Twitter was not that bad.

PalePimp,

@boilingsteam BlueSky: You might not be interested in politics, neither politics is interested in you, but our shitty algorithm definetively thinks you should be. 🤣

the entire country of Norway would not exist if people didn't eat animals here.

farmland is pretty sparse. we can't grow soy or any other rich protein source. our country is not great for wheat production either. we mostly relied on fish and some pork and chicken for protein, historically speaking. now we import soy and such things of course, but it wasn't always like that.

the idiots who run this country want us to have a more plant-based diet. the same idiots want EU membership.

EU is about money.

the fish plus pork and chicken is self-reliance. if all the money goes away, we have to rely on what's here.

we have more than enough money. but if the continent collapses, guess where we'll go for food. it's going to be the fish plus pork and chicken.

i'm not entirely against the EU vision, but i mainly think it should be a thing where you can travel to work somewhere else.

ideals vs reality on the ground.

PalePimp,

@thor The EU is both a recipe for poverty and authoritarianism, they're making a country like Spain who is a net producer of all sort of high quality foods (plants and animals) uproot their fields and farms to import food from Morocco and South Africa, while the French burn lorries of Spanish fruits at the French border, a long tradition of the French farmers, something Spain was told will end when joining the EU. So go figure if the EU is great.

The EU is a fantastic Country Club for politicians that has been co-opted by the sons of the Elites who are "cool and vegan", consider us useless eaters who lack free will, and plan to run countries without electricity and agriculture because in their retarded "rich boy" mentality view these things (and not their planes and yachts) as something that is destroying "Their Planet"

PalePimp,

@boilingsteam I still think the future eventually is native ports if maximum efficiency is required. I was never a zealot so for me both options are good, and I also want Proton to succeed, in many (if not most) instances is as good as native, which confirms what John Carmack once said back in the day: "As long as the game runs fine, it doesn't matter if API is emulated." And I add: if tomorrow there was a PS4 software for Linux allowing us to run 95% of PS4 games at native speeds... does it qualify as Linux gaming?

These are our values and who we are. Again, why does a tiny minority of the population (and a radical religious sect at that) dictate "our values" and shape "our policies"?

@boilingsteam Things are moving faster than expected, there is quite a lot of people making videos of games already running on Nouveau+NVK

Performance is still spotty, it is early days after all, but oh boy it promises to get good faster than expected.

youtube.com/watch?v=npxsD7u52qk

PalePimp,

@boilingsteam Proper subverted expectations, I was expecting at least a year to get to this point. 😂

PalePimp,

@boilingsteam Good question, if one could use Nouveau+Mesa and the CuDa libraries without the rest of the Nvidia user space it would be fantastic, best of both worlds.

In principle I don't see why it wouldn't be possible, unless CuDa depends on other obscure userspace proprietary Nvidia stuff.

Exciting times ahead.

@boilingsteam Used to be a big Ubuntu fan, they pushed me on the desktop to Arch which for me has been fantastic in the end.

On my servers I run Debian and Rocky.

Not looking back but to see Ubuntu fading further away in the mirror.

PalePimp,

All large video game companies have the same problem, they've grown too large and thus constantly chase big hits, in the process they have become extremely risk-adverse. In their crusade to find the next big thing they produce clone after clone game that tries to have as much mass appeal as possible and thus have become completely stale.

PalePimp,

Gates is lately earning plenty of sympathy points, when he is not busy vaccinating us he is tampering with the mosquitoes, or busy producing cancer-based synthetic meat, at lunch he buys as much farmland as he possibly can, and in-between all of those he is still part of Microsoft and busy influencing its policy. Gates is directly responsible for the XBOX division still throwing billions year after year in an attempt to monopolise Gaming for example.

Butiful, although it would be much better if it could animate a 3D model that you render afterwards, it would produce a perfect video. I'm talking about some kind of motion-capture...
