In the end, Razputin, aren’t we all just dogs playing poker?

my terminal on ubuntu 23.04 shows files already purged and cannot upgrade, what do I do now?

Upgrading from ubuntu 23.10 to 24.04 I found a broken package: libfreerdp2-2. This package is not in var/lib/dpkg/info, but terminal insists it is. I’ve tried purging it, removing it, apt --fix-broken install, but it always goes back to Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)...

RandomChain,

Maybe it still appears in /var/lib/dpkg/status? If it is, try deleting the entry from there.

RAID setup for Ubuntu media server

I recently acquired two used blade servers and a short rack to put them in. I’m planning to use one or the other as the replacement for a media server that died on me a bit ago. The old media server was just a little refurb dell workstation, with a single SSD in it, but the servers have 6 and 8 bays, respectively....

RandomChain,

I use openmediavault for my home NAS, it does all the heavy lifting for you with a nice GUI so you don’t have to config everything yourself. I’d recommend checking it if you don’t have a lot of experience with RAID setups or don’t want to do manually.

Just please remember that RAID is not a backup solution, it’s a redundancy solution. If you have data corruption on one side, it can copy itself to the other mirror and then you’re screwed. If your media is important, keep a proper separate backup.

Steam crashes after upgrading NVIDIA driver to 545.29.06

I ran apt upgrade on my laptop today after not using it for a couple of weeks, the main thing was upgrade of NVIDIA driver to 545.29.06, but there was also some change on one of the steam-lib packages (I’m using the Steam deb version, not flatpak). Ever since upgrading, Steam crashes on start....

RandomChain,

Turns out it was a problem with the Steam client itself, I think it’s because the steam:i386 package isn’t used anymore and it’s now steam-installer, but something with the steam update didn’t run correctly. After purging all the old steam packages and reinstalling from Pop Shop it started running again.

RandomChain,

Yeah, some vendors do this, I think the .exe basically unpacks the .bin file then calls some API or something to push it from Windows while it’s running. Probably done for the sake of more casual users who don’t know/want to mess with the actual BIOS UI.

RandomChain,

I thought there was supposed to be increased spawn rate while the fire is in your line of sight?

RandomChain,

Just to add to that, you also have the option of using Flatpak, which already comes installed by default in Pop OS and integrated into Pop Shop. With Flatpak you can usually get a more recent version of the app, but the downside is larger install size.

RandomChain,

What’s the gimmick here? Just smaller floors?

Display freeze while updating nvidia driver

I have a Dell Precision laptop with an nvidia GPU, today for the second time I’ve experienced a freeze while updating drivers. This also happened to me the last time a driver update was published. The display just froze and I couldn’t do anything, though it seemed it was just the display dying because I had some Youtube...

RandomChain,

Worth a try. I should probably switch back to X11 anyway since Slack screen sharing is broken on Wayland for quite some time and it doesn’t look like they’re gonna fix it.

RandomChain,

Thank you for releasing the Mesa 23.1 update. I was hoping you’ll get to it for some time.

RandomChain,

If you’re using the default bluetooth connection from settings, maybe try installing blueman instead.

RandomChain,

Did you check if the recovery partition was recognised and mounted? Maybe some voodoo made it fail to mount, but it worked after a reboot.

RandomChain,

I have the wireguard configs imported with nmcli and use WireGuard Indicator to turn it on/off.

A Visual Guide to SSH Tunnels: Local and Remote Port Forwarding (iximiuz.com)

SSH is yet another example of an ancient technology that is still in wide use today. It may very well be that learning a couple of SSH tricks is more profitable in the long run than mastering a dozen Cloud Native tools destined to become deprecated next quarter....

RandomChain,

Thanks, bookmarking that. I always get -L and -R mixed up and have to look up examples, this one looks very handy.

RandomChain,

I really Pop and think it's a great distro for beginners. If you're getting the laptop from System76 you know the hardware is compatible and you won't have to mess with the installation which is also a plus.

Gaming on Linux have made great progress in recent years and quite a lot of games run great on Wine/Proton. I have a duel-boot setup but hardly ever boot Windows because I don't need it much anymore. However if you're playing online games with anti-cheat, that's a different experience as they are less supported.

One thing you should note is that Pop works best with Cosmic DE, now running over Gnome but at some point at an independent DE, and it's not a good choice if you prefer some other DE (technically possible to install something else but missing the point IMO). So try it first on a VM or something to see if you enjoy the Cosmic workflow.

Selling a game while making it open source. (howlingmoonsoftware.itch.io)

So I've been working on a crafting/exploration game for a while called Veridian Expanse. (I guess the details don't really matter, so I won't go into that, but check the links at the end if you're interested) I have some unresolved feelings about making the game open source, and how/why to do it....

RandomChain,

Sounds like Shattered Pixel Dungeon. The code is open source (since it's a port of the original Pixel Dungeon which is also open source) and a Java version and .apk are freely available to download from github. But it is also being sold on mobile/Steam/GOG, and I think the dev is making a bit of money of it (enough to go on developing, in any case).

Playing Psychonauts for the first time and it is blowing my mind. (lemmy.world)

Psychonauts was always one of those games I was meaning to play ever since it came out. I've played most of the double fine titles but I started it and it didn't instantly click so I put it down and never got back to it. The second one came out and I thought alright time to go for it. Wow! What a debut from double fine! Clever...

RandomChain,

What a great game. It manages to do what very few games even try, while keeping the same basic platformer controls each level feels fresh and has its own unique experience. I think even the sequel, although more polished and very enjoyable, fails to capture that feeling. I've completed Psychonauts to level 101 so many times over the year, I envy you for getting to experience it for the first time.

What's your adventure game comfort food?

What's that one adventure game you can just boot up and have a great chill time with? Mine would probably be Day of the Tentacle. It's such a wonderful, colorful world to inhabit, and all the characters are lively and oozing with personality (no Sludge-o-Matic pun intended). I could spend hours just walking around talking to...

RandomChain,

Probably the Quest for Glory series for me. Played them so many times that I can just pick up any one them with any character and get sucked right back in to the game. I've had an itch lately to do a full playthrough of all 5 games after not touching them for a long time but I have little free time and too much backlog...
