Original box I bought in '81, we had been playing since '79, though I waited to get the upadeted rules. Dice might be original, or might be from Squad Leader.

@nyrath @synlogic All of it, there were the digest sized books in the racks, micro- and task force games in plastic bags, deluxe bookshelf games from AH and SPI, all sorts of magazines such as the Dragon, General, White Dwarf, and The Space Gamer. It was heaven, and that's just scratching the surface of hobby shops.

An old classic "what if" question is What scifi novel or movie would you like to live in?

Adult me is skeptical of most of them, they all have drawbacks.

Child me instantly knows my heart's desire.

@nyrath I'd be remiss to not say I'd want to live in my Solis People of the Sun setting: democracy, longevity, exploration; all things good. It still is trekish in that "one can make no mistakes and still lose" though society takes steps to mitigate the damage. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/422968/solis-people-of-the-sun

Star maps. It was no small undertaking making over thirty maps, the most accurate still I have found for an RPG. I also created a unique, and plausible setting. Inspiration was drawn from solstation, and Winchell Chung's maps on atomic rockets. Using the same orientation as NASA JPL, and data from places such as the internet stellar database, simbad, and exokyoto; closest I found was gruze, seems they used similar sources. Each map is its own astro synthesis database, which was discarded ...

@Hcobb @eldadoinquieto @isaackuo @nyrath @peterdrake I am working on an adventure with a space horde, and the players have to take an emissary to them in order to see if they can find a way to bribe them not to attack. I figure the idea is that if the bribe is cheaper than mobilizing military forces, its preferable. If that is not possible, pay one part of the horde to protect them from others.

Apropos of scout service starships landing on wilderness planets light-years from civilization: I had some uninformed speculation I made with zero input from any expert. The topic is if your tail-sitting starship topples over, what can you do to try and get it back to launch orientation?

@nyrath Vehicle I posted solved both of these issues, with a winch in the cargo hold, and extendable landing legs. I went with some USGS guys doing a survey, and it was interesting how they would simply winch up the side of a mountain, and drive down the other.

@Robert_Brandt @isaackuo @n1xnx @cstross @sudnadja @nyrath @hendric @KarlSchroeder @FredKiesche I literally have the math above for an example case. So yes, if you want any kind of velocity, they actually do weight an appreciable amount, so no, x+1 is not always better. Everything in space combat comes with a cost in mass, in expenses of manufacture. And some combinations don’t pay.

@sudnadja @isaackuo @nyrath @Sevoris @n1xnx @cstross @hendric @KarlSchroeder @FredKiesche For the use of sub-munitions, I would add movement.

Recon by fire, if you are not seeing anything, it is probably a good idea to detonated a few nuclear weapons in the area, so as to irradiate the area. Also a bonus of detonating weapons is the ability to fry any eyes looking at you.

And a more distant view. Asteroids are an underrated playing area for traveller, I think. You can circumnavigate the entire world, possibly jump to escape velocity (for small asteroids) and the non-uniform gravity fields make orbits around the asteroids unstable and somewhat unpredictable.

A thing that makes it difficult in doing hardish SF in a RPG is that the players will simply ask the GM the results w/o doing the calcs. Which is entirely normal, as that is what people would do in real life is ask the ship's computer. The rub lies in that the computer was an NPC run by me, so I was loading myself up with the extra rules. Lesson: KISS.
