Husband, Father, Good Cook. Reader. Keeper of abandoned dogs. Does not fit into a neat box or category. "Ah Mr. Gibbon, another damned, fat, square book. Always, scribble, scribble, scribble, eh?" (The Duke of Gloucester, on being presented with Volume 2 of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.)

FROM THE GREAT LIBRARY OF DREAMS 108 - The Monster of Lake LaMetrie by Wardon Allan Curtis

Another early tale of a surviving dinosaur but this story about a lake dwelling dinosaur takes a very bizarre turn...

@hypnogoria I first read that in this anthology. Lots of great stuff in there.

How much time should I spend modelling a landing gear on a spaceship? Rhetorical question. Especially if your answer is less than an hour.

FredKiesche,
@FredKiesche@dice.camp avatar

@thisnorthernboy 10,000 hours if you’re audience are landing gear SME’s. 🤔

Does sci-fi shape the future? Tech billionaires from Bill Gates to Elon Musk have often talked about the impact of novels they read as teens, from Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" to Iain M. Banks' "Culture" series. Big Think's Namir Khaliq spoke to authors including Andy Weir, Lois McMaster Bujold, @cstross and @pluralistic about how much impact they think science fiction has had, or can have.

If I had more energy I'd be tempted to write a snarky, satirical, 21st century Jetson's style short story set in a future where all the dot-com 1.0-3.0 hype turned out to be true and faithful predictions of our lives in 2025. Just so I could explore the unanticipated drawbacks ("oops, the Amazon drone delivering your neighbour's new dishwasher just fell through your roof; meanwhile trades.com only shows you roofers who live in Boston, England, not Boston, MA").

@cstross And you say you can’t write about the near future. Maybe there’s a market in satirical alternate pasts?

While that “off road bed” might cause chuckles, I can see all sorts of military, accident, disaster, etc. uses.

@isaackuo @cstross You’d probably set the minefield with a variety of types, different pressures, wire, probe, command detonated, so a lighter vehicle might be worse (less belly protection, see the reason the US bought the MRAP).

FredKiesche,
@FredKiesche@dice.camp avatar

@isaackuo @cstross If a minefield is prepared with time, it’ll have a mix 0f mines, so a light vehicle might have the ability to avoid a tank-class mine, but not necessarily the others. So it wouldn’t be a complete solution.

I resumed work on a "upscale" version of a 1969 vintage model rocket design.

Got it to the point where I could put primer on the upper and lower stages.

Sanding, another coat or two of primer, and more sanding ahead! Then a three-color paint job.

The booster stage of a large model rocket, showing a tubular "launch lug" glued to one of the large fins.
The rear of a model rocket, showing masking tape wrapped around the end.
Part of a model rocket, painted with white primer.

@StefanEJones Ah, the tumbling recovery. At first I thought this was the one you could launch an egg in.
