afaik castles have a recurring problem where rich people buy them saying “we’re going to restore this and keep it authentic” but then as soon as they find out the price of doing that they backtrack and usually end up not doing anything. But I would prefer doing nothing to doing this.

This was a really cool and insightful essay, thank you for sharing. I’ve always conceptualized the mind as a complex physical, chemical, and electrical pattern (edit: and a social context) - if I were to write a sci fi story about people trying to upload their brain to a computer I would really emphasize how they can copy the electrical part perfectly, but then the physical and chemical differences would basically kill “you” instantly creating a digital entity that is something else. That “something else” would be so alien to us that communication with it would be impossible, and we might not even recognize it as a form of life (although maybe it is?).

We’re leftists and our site culture is pretty aggressive. Liberals are predisposed not to like us because of the first one, and we’re especially prone to arguing with them in the comments of their instances because of the second. This might be controversial but I’m gonna say it: it sucks that women/femmes are less safe than men/masc are, it sucks that this means they have to be so careful all the time about things guys don’t even think about, it sucks that our society doesn’t take their safety or seeking their justice seriously, and we aught to be doing something systemically to address all of those issues.

It’s still pending legal challenge ofc, but from everything I’ve read they’re only going to ban it from appearing on app stores, which should mean that anyone not on an Apple device can still install the app, and anyone with any device should still be able to access the website.

So I’m expecting TikTok to continue to be very popular with Americans even after they’re no longer “officially” supported.

The moral side in this conflict is with the freed slaves and native tribes, both of which overwhelmingly sided with the Brits. They didn’t exactly have a great choice between the colonists who were actively killing them and the distant empire that had kinda sorta said something about not killing them as much, though.

And I have a gut feeling that in ten years’ time people will be asking “who are the millions of people still watching Rick and Morty?”, which will mark its ascent into the pantheon of American cartoons that can literally never be cancelled.
