The trouble is that both words have a verb sense and a noun sense.

The noun sense of affect is something like “mood” or “emotion” and isn’t used often, while the noun sense of effect is “thing that happened (because of some cause)” and is a rather common word.

The verb sense of affect is “to cause something to happen (to something)” and is a pretty common word, while the verb sense of effect is more like “to make something be true” as in “effecting change” above.

The mnemonic I use is from dungeons and dragons, some spells are “mind-affecting effects” meaning they change minds and they’re caused by the spell being cast.

I don’t know that I’d say persuasion skills are an affect, but if your mood gives people ideas, that’d work.

There’s admittedly some overlap

Study reveals "widespread, bipartisan aversion" to neighbors owning AR-15 rifles (www.psypost.org)

A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that across all political and social groups in the United States, there is a strong preference against living near AR-15 rifle owners and neighbors who store guns outside of locked safes. This surprising consensus suggests that when it comes...

Basically yes. It’s at best a way to hedge their language and avoid being technically wrong, but in practice it can certainly be used in quite misleading ways.

I would say that in my opinion “a leading cause” would need to at least be in the top half, but it could possibly be anything but last since it’s “leading” last place…

Significantly safer to navigate in practice than traditional intersections, and very straightforward to navigate, if not quite as easy as a normal intersection you’ve seen all your life.

So could a person sticking their head out and blowing, but it’s still a terrible idea.

How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals

I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying “woke”, “critical race theory”, ““grooming””, and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open....

The silly thing is that they feel a need to justify it. They’re speaking English, every single word they say carries an incredible history of the world we live in from Rome to the speakers of Old Norse and otherwise. The simplest solution is a handwave: the creators translated everything out of Galactic Basic for you.

I need to avoid even the slightest hint of a mistrial so we can put you in prison for good

I mean I’m pretty sure that’s it. There’s no chance whatsoever this doesn’t go to appeal if he’s convicted, and you don’t want the case to be overturned because the appeal court thinks the judge was biased against Trump

spoilerYou need to put the text after the two spoiler words, not between them, no? The first sets up the tag, the second is the name

The most “it’s complicated” situation

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I’m sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I’m sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I’m sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it’s been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one...
