One of the first movies to leverage the idea of radiation- it came out the same year the Godzilla debuted in Japan, and two years before Godzilla came to the US theaters....
I feel this way about Tarantula. I saw it as a kid and I vividly remembered it. When I rewatched it as an adult, I was surprised it was far less hokey than I feared. It’s actually watchable. It’s notable for being Clint Eastwood’s first movie (though he’s just got a bit part).
One thousand percent agree. So much so, in fact, that after reading synopses of what was written into the show, I didn’t bother watching even one episode. Foundation is by far my favorite science fiction of all time. I understand why liberties would of necessity be taken with the story in order to make compelling television - but this - what’s been done - was not necessary.
And it’s refreshing to be able to say so. On reddit, all the Asimov real estate appears to be fully bought and paid for by corporate masters - this opinion would be deleted and you might well be banned.
OK I have a sauce recipe for you but it’s less about the sauce and more about the pasta method, tbh.
“Drunken” pasta with white wine marinara is just amazing.
28 ounce can peeled Marzano tomatoes
1 can tomato paste
1/2 cup white wine
1/2 red onion, finely diced
2 large cloves garlic, minced
3 tbs olive oil
1 large sprig basil leaves
1 sprig rosemary
6 sprigs thyme
salt/pepper to taste
Box (cheap) Chardonnay
Pasta of choice
Place tomatoes in blender and puree, not too much
Saute onions and garlic in olive oil for two minutes
Add white wine and allow wine to cook down for three minutes
Add tomatoes to onions and garlic
Add spices to sauce and bury them in the sauce
Simmer on low for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally
Remove spices and discard
Add tomato paste and stir to incorporate
Cook pasta in a mixture of half/half chardonnay and water. Top pasta with marinara. Serve with garlic bread.
The flavor the wine imparts to the pasta is just amazing, seriously something that takes your pasta to a different level. Mangia!
The U.S. Department of Energy on Friday proposed energy efficiency standards on water heaters it said would save consumers $11.4 billion on energy and water bills annually....
So I can’t stand it when people do the “reeeee” thing either, but this one kind of bugs me.
$11.4 billion in savings per year for 332 million people averages to $34 per year.
Here is a typical electric water heater. Cost: $439. Here is one with a heat pump installed as described in the article. Cost: $1,909 - a difference in price of $1,470.
At $34 per year, this water heater would have to last 43 years before any cost savings from the efficiency gains would be realized. I don’t know if you know much about water heaters, but this won’t happen by a long shot.
Gas units fare similarly, with typical units verses high efficiency units’ price differential.
It’s hard to be a homeowner these days. This will make it harder. I can accept it in the name of efficiency gains and saving the planet and all that, but the whole “this will save consumers money,” bit is pure gaslighting. It’s not true. This will cost consumers quite a lot of money.
True, that actually makes me feel slightly better. But nothing’s going to make me feel better when I go to buy a new water heater and it costs three times as much as the last one did.
Oh hey, I’m not alone! So I wrote a script that emulates Reddit’s behavior when you have checked the “open links in a new tab” option in your user settings.
Edit: You can apply the code to a bookmarklet, and when you go to old.lemmy and click the bookmarklet, links will behave like you like. The downside is every time you load a new page, you have to click it again.
If you prefer, you can use the same code as a Tampermonkey userscript and it will apply it to the site automagically. I put both versions of the script at this pastebin link:
Yeah what luck! America in 1619, with its gleaming cities and endless opportunities - every African aspired to be a member of those huddled masses yearning to breathe enslaved!

This is precisely why I quit. I’m still on reddit because the conversation volume on Lemmy is not yet high enough to keep me on top of a few select subjects I follow.
I only moderated one (significant) community - about 30k. All I really do is maintain the bot to control spam. But, I quit. I’m still there, I just refuse to do anything to make the experience any better than it is, and it will slowly degrade over time from my inaction.
Capitalism is great in that it creates great things. Capitalism sucks because it ultimately, inevitably destroys every great thing it creates.
I mean honestly, it’s a competent burger but it’s a fucking hamburger. It’s not haute cuisine. Also, their fries are limp as shit because they’re fresh cut but they don’t prep them or par cook them. I cannot for the life of me understand why people wait in line for this shit. But I say that about a lot of things.
Reddit tried to sticky this post for moderators around 12p CST today, and they’ve since tried to bury it. Thought it might be good to back up the link here.
The word “openly” is the only thing that separates your comment from currently-happening-reality. Plenty of subs and their mods are bought and paid for.
Also this whole post from the VP is such a load of shit. “We have a seat for you at the table… if you want it.” Boy only a VP in a big corporation could keep a mouth so loaded with horseshit.
The head of engineering for the company that operates former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Truth Social app told Reuters on Monday he had resigned, in a blow for the venture.
It sure does. We spend more on the military than the next top ten countries combined. We spend 40% of all the military spending in the whole world. You’re darn right we need to curtail government spending!
Oh, sorry, not supposed to talk about that spending. That spending is just fine, with complete disregard to whether a politician has a D or an R next to their name, every year, without fail, without exception and without argument. We’re in such a financial crisis you guys! And yet more than half the bloated budget is just magically off the table! Isn’t that fascinating.

Login doesn’t carry over so it makes me wonder too - if this isn’t a hosted instance but you’re actually logging into your home instance and this is just an overlay reading your home instance’s data - then why would the overlay require you to login?
lol class action lawsuits, also known as “lawyers printing money for themselves.” Three guesses as to who’s going to be first up against the wall when the AI revolution comes. I got no love for Google, but holy Christ, am I supposed to root for the lawyers?
What I can’t figure is… who sits down and thinks “fuck Elon Musk and Twitter, I’m sick of this bullshit” and then follows that logic with “you know what I need more of in my life? Fuckin’ FACEBOOK, yeah.”
This is so true. I wish there was a will/way to eliminate bots altogether on a platform. The more popular a platform is, the more bots swarm in to sway the opinions of the crowd - political opinions, consumer opinions, you name it. Reddit was lousy with bots. Constant ceaseless opinion farming. What’s to stop Lemmy from becoming just as obnoxious?
I don’t think this will matter at all. The first instance that brands itself as “we only federate with instances that exclude all relationships with Meta,” is the instance I will be in and all the people who I want to hang around will be there also. Federating with Meta will be like holding a flashing neon sign that says “stay away from me.”
I don’t want anything to do with Reddit anymore and I haven’t had anything to do with Twitter or Facebook for more than 10 years - and all for similar reasons. Huge groups of people brought together by money are fucking poison.
