Thorny_Insight,

Apparently 3 synonyms for “police” still isn’t enough to filter out police violence articles. Adding “sheriff” to the list now. How do you not get tired of this is beyond me…

So an electric quad-bike that’s (probably) worse to drive offroad than and actual quad-bike or a motorbike. I struggle to see the target audience of this. It’s too wide for single track but too narrow for quad-bike trails. A mobility scooter for gravel roads?

Thorny_Insight, (edited )

Probably. I’d like to think of myself as a person who haven’t but having spent over 20 years on internet I feel like such a statement would almost certainly be wrong.

Thorny_Insight,

I honestly can’t think of anything. Is there things people have said that I don’t like? Sure. But ones that made me feel awful? No, and if there was something like that it probably felt bad because deep down I knew they were right.

Offence is taken, not given. If you call me something I know not to be true I simply don’t care.

Thorny_Insight,

Unpopular opinion: We should. Obviously as someone who builds and fixes things for living I’m a little biased but I do look down on men that lack any handyman skills (and so do many women). I think doing things like being able to change a tire on a car is about the bare minimum a man should know how to do. I’ll cut you some slack if you don’t own a car or a licence.

Thorny_Insight,

I don’t know about the provider thing these days but I feel like the protector part still holds true. If you hear a person messing with your door lock in the middle of the night it’s the guys job to go check out on it. Statistically virtually every man is stronger than all women so ofcourse that’s who you send in when there’s a risk for physical altercation.

Thorny_Insight, (edited )

Because in general men are good with things and women are good with people. There’s a good reason the vast majority of construction workers, mechanics and engineers are men and it’s not (only) because women aren’t welcome on those fields.

Thorny_Insight,

Ofcourse it’s a generalization. I’m speaking of all men and women as groups. This isn’t about individuals.

If you pick random 100 men and random 100 women from the population and give them the task of building/fixing something the men are going to perform better every single time.

Thorny_Insight, (edited )

No, you’ve been brainwashed.

This is how productive your reply was. Are you going to elaborate or you here just to throw shit? Just telling someone they’re wrong isn’t exactly going to make them change their mind about it. Counter the argument - not the person saying it.

Thorny_Insight, (edited )

And you think there’s no biological difference between the sexes. Got it.

Thorny_Insight, (edited )

Oh, I’m sorry. I thought we’re here misrepresenting each other’s views.

Thorny_Insight,

I was in such situation recently and I dealt with it like an adult rather than petty teenager. Don’t burn your bridges.

Thorny_Insight,

Social media, not just Twitter. The key issue here is human nature. These platforms are just the force multiplier. Misinformation is alive and well on Lemmy as well. It just flies under the radar for the most part because it doesn’t go against your prior beliefs.

Thorny_Insight,

I don’t think there’s a silver bullet for it. What works is critical thinking and humility about what you don’t know. One good rule of thumb is to keep in mind that things are virtually always nuanced and complicated. When ever someone presents something as simple, straight forward, black and white etc. an alarm should go off. Even when what is being said might not technically be incorrent it’s still often just one side of the story. There’s always the other side to it as well. Nothing/no one is all bad or all good. If one stands for a cause but can’t make a single good faith argument against their own view about it then they’re not thinking honestly about it.

Thorny_Insight, (edited )

Yeah that’s another rule-of-thumb: Never say never or always, there’s always an exception. I’m also fully aware of the irony of that whole sentence.

Yeah I get what you mean. Would be nice to have but I don’t know how such an add-on would work in practice. I imagine that rather than filtering it out it would instead need to be something that adds a correction/context next to it. There’s usually atleast a kernel of truth even in misinformation so simply just hiding it doesn’t seem optimal either. An interesting point about free-speech I heard recently was that by silencing the fringes it leaves the rest of us ignorant to what views people hold as well as prevents us from hearing all the evidence that they’re wrong. Generally I’m not against misinformation on places like Lemmy but what I do wish is that the top comment on each thread was the one providing nuance, context and correction. This place just doesn’t encourage that. There’s a set of accepted beliefs and viewpoints and anything going against that is just met with hostility. Cognitive dissonance is a powerful psychological phenomenom and people don’t like their beliefs challenged.

Thorny_Insight,

The reason they allowed it near Kharkiv is because Russia has their military stuff parked pretty much out in the open in plain sight on their side of the border knowing full well there’s nothing Ukraine can do about it. They’re doing constant cross-border raids and cheap glide bombs are especially a problem as they can drop them from a high altitude 20km behind the borders without ever entering Ukrainian air space. That is not so much of an issue on the eastern front because the territory where most of the Russians are is already in Ukraine. Same as with Crimea.

Thorny_Insight,

I remember a defector on a podcast telling about how she was wondering what a trash can was in the safe house in China and how foreign concept “trash” was to her. They don’t consume anything that comes in a package and if it does it’s then repurposed for something else but definitely will not get thrown away.

I’d develop a pickup truck that would have only the bare essential features and would be built from the ground up with the intention to make it extremely durable and easy to fix. Instead of a body-on-frame I’d probably go with a stainless steel exoskeleton instead and plastic/fibre glass panels you could just swap out to a new ones if you damage them. Kind of like on side-by-sides. The newer models then would just be ones with certain parts that have been upgraded to a better ones and would be 100% compatible with older models. You wouldn’t ever need to buy a new truck again. Ideally there would be both diesel and electric versions - ideally so that you could convert one into another if you so desire.

As someone with a tiny workshop as well I take pride in how compact and efficient I can make it. Sure, a larger one would be nice but I’m so damn grateful for what I’ve got. Used to live in an apartment building before where I could only dream of a space where I didn’t always need to pack up my tools and shove them into a closet when I was done with the job.

Thorny_Insight,

Ofcourse it’s photoshopped. There are virtually no digital photographers who release unedited photos. There’s always adjustments done to exposure, shadows/highlights, contrast, white balance etc.

However if you’re implying that it’s obvious to you that this has been faked then I’d love to hear your reasoning as I’m quite experienced photo editor myself and nothing stands out to me and I feel like my 15+ years of experience has trained me to spot such things.

The only thing I’m noticing is the difference in the color of the sky behind the branches but that can probably be explained by the fact that this was likely taken with a smartphone and is due to it combining multiple exposures for higer dynamic range, commonly known as HDR.

Thorny_Insight,

I like this kind of pictures. Someone should come up with a name for them. Here’s few similar kind of ones:

Thorny_Insight,

For quite some time now I’ve had the issue that the video simply refuses to stop playing requiring me to refresh the page. Might be an issue with one of the add-ons too though.

Thorny_Insight,

It’s the internet. We’re all anonymous. You can just ask

Thorny_Insight,

I tend to avoid certain taboo topics because I assume some day all my social media posts will be linked back to me and I don’t have faith in people being capable of understanding all the nuance in what I’m saying and it’ll just make it seem like I’m saying something I’m not.

I also don’t discuss drugs because they’re illegal and I don’t do drugs and neither should you and even if you do you’re better off shutting the fuck up about it.
