Management is ordering pizza for the office and sends around a sheet asking what everyone wants.

The third-party voter is the last one to get the sheet.

There are 10 votes for pepperoni and 9 votes for cheese.

The third party voter hates pepperoni, and thinks cheese is a bit boring, so he votes for the anchovies in his heart.

He has wasted his vote since cheese would be vastly preferable to him than pepperoni, and anchovies had no realistic chance of winning. That’s why everyone thinks third party voters are ridiculous.

The Dam and Damrak- Jan van der Heyden & Adriaen van de Velde, oil on canvas (1663) (lemmy.world)

The staffage (human and animal figures) in Jan van der Heyden’s paintings was often added by other artists such as Johannes Lingelbach, Adriaen van de Velde and Eglon van der Neer. He most often collaborated with the accomplished painter of figures and animals Adriaen van de Velde. The two artists had an especially successful...

He could have just retired, but he had to try to steal an election.

I hope he goes to prison for his hubris.

We’ll always have the four seasons total landscaping press conference, the ooze running down his head, the time he was recorded trying to have sex with an obvious honeypot, and his vapid 9/11ing to remember him by.

He’s a manic disaster manifest.

But also: the GOP is absolutely a fascist organization.

The existence of other authoritarian regimes doesn’t erase the existence of that one either.

Well that’s a pretty ridiculous thing to say. Here are the 14 points of ur-fascism laid out by Eco. While some apply to the DNC, every single one applies to the GOP, which makes it look like you have no idea what Fascism actually is:

The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.”

The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense, Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.”

The cult of action for action’s sale. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”

Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture, the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.”

Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.”

Appeal to social frustration. “[…] one of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups.

The obsession with a plot. “The followers must feel besieged. The easiest way to solve the plot is the appeal to xenophobia.”

The enemy is both weak and strong. “[…] the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.”

Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.”

Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.”

Everybody is educated to become a hero. “in Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.”

Machismo and Weaponry. “This is the origin of machismo (which implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality). Since even sex is a difficult game to play, the Ur-Fascist hero tends to play with weapons—doing so becomes an ersatz phallic exercise.”

Selective Populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.

Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning.”

TIL that Stalin was a fascist.

You seem easily confused. How is saying that some of these terrible things apply to the DNC defending them?

And just because you can’t be bothered to read it doesn’t make it convoluted and non-standard; it’s a pretty widely cited list.

Cool story bro.

They’ve sat down at the table with Nazis (quite literally with some of their supporters), so they may as well have to defend or accept it publicly rather than being crypto fascists about it.

They literally cannot admit it: any discussion on the topic devolves into reverse accusations about how leftism is the new fascism, even though that’s a fuckin’ stupid thing to say.

Conservatism has morality exactly backwards: they see their ideology as “good,” so obviously fascism can’t be on that same side of the spectrum! They see their beliefs and values as clearly superior because they hold them. There’s no intellectual integrity there, which is why they change their minds about policy only when it has a negative impact on their life. They haven’t carefully considered the topic; they’ve been force-fed reactionary propaganda that keeps that from happening.

Lies and anti-intilectualism are the fertilizer that fascism requires to thrive; winding up the “woke” is a deliberate effort to recruit more reactionaries.

They will never admit it, because that ruins the game.

Birth of the Virgin- Pietro Lorenzetti, gauche on triphtych panel (1342) (lemmy.world)

Pietro Lorenzetti (c. 1280 – 1348) or Pietro Laurati was an Italian painter, active between c. 1306 and 1345. Together with his younger brother Ambrogio, he introduced naturalism into Sienese art. In their artistry and experiments with three-dimensional and spatial arrangements, the brothers foreshadowed the art of the...

The Icebergs- Frederic Edwin Church, oil on canvas (1861) (lemmy.world)

Shortly before the first exhibition, the American Civil War began. Church decided to call the painting The North, a title with a double meaning: a picture of the Arctic and a patriotic reference to the northern Union. Advertisements for the exhibition noted that the admission proceeds would be donated to the Patriotic Fund,...

Per Wikipedia:

The V-3 (German: Vergeltungswaffe 3, (“Vengeance Weapon 3”) was a German World War II large-caliber gun working on the multi-charge principle whereby secondary propellant charges are fired to add velocity to a projectile, built in tunnels and permanently aimed at London, England.

The Germans planned to use the weapon to bombard London from two large bunkers in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France, but they were rendered unusable by Allied bombing raids before completion. Two similar guns were used to bombard Luxembourg from December 1944 to February 1945.

The V-3 was also known as the Hochdruckpumpe (“High Pressure Pump,” HDP for short), which was a code name intended to hide the real purpose of the project. It was also known as Fleißiges Lieschen (“Busy Lizzie”).

They detail the shelling of Luxembourg in the article.

It seems like the idea was revived for modern railguns, except instead of chemical charges they’re electrical.

By the time that the Ardennes offensive began on 16 December 1944, Kammler received orders from OB West (German Army Command in the West) to begin firing at the end of the month, and the first gun tube was ready for action on 30 December 1944. Two warm-up rounds were initially fired, followed by five high-explosive shells which were fired in sequence, attended by Kammler. The muzzle velocity was approximately 935 metres per second (3,070 ft/s).

The second gun tube was brought into operation on 11 January 1945 and 183 rounds in total were fired until 22 February 1945, with 44 confirmed hits in the urban area. From the 142 rounds that struck Luxembourg, total casualties were 10 dead and 35 wounded.
