@viticci just saw the HomeKit hardware article on MacStories. Good read!

One note, the HomeKit API actually does support pan and tilt cameras officially. But manufacturers don’t support it as Apple Home doesn’t support it. And no third party supports it as no camera support it. 😂

See https://developer.apple.com/documentation/homekit/hmcamerasettingscontrol and all the tilt characteristics under it.

13 units at $7.99 equals $679,000 in proceeds after the 15% cut. I'm liking Apple's maths.

Well that's me. I'm out of the small business program.

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@tonyarnold I’m guessing so. Seems to be affecting a lot of developers.

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@tonyarnold that would be my preferred option.

I like the look of this chart in App Store Connect, but is there a chance Petty made almost AU$800k in the last couple of hours?

[Phil Gould voice] No no no no no!

@zachsimone I'm beating you here.

@JustMeDevin @zachsimone that 30% will hurt.

@Mecid @zachsimone @JustMeDevin seems you’re buying one really nice yacht.

Regarding DSA compliance in App Store: I’ve read somewhere that unless your apps are your primary source of income, you are not a trader.

Can anyone confirm this? 🤔

aaron_pearce,

@MuseumShuffle @podomunro @anikaseibezeder Would save a lot of indies a lot of pain.

I guess if Apple wants to make visionOS a real thing, they will probably need to treat developers a lot better than what they do for iOS given customers are definitely not there after the first wave of passionate ones 😛

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@khaost I'm not seeing the business benefit of porting my apps to Vision right now. Doesn't seem to be enough units out there to justify the development cost other than for the fun of developing for it.

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@khaost Limited audience, limited access to hardware (including no dev-kits for any not huge it seems?) seems to have stalled the developer story in its tracks.

I basically can't commit to porting my apps to the platform until I have hardware to do them to the standard I want and I won't buy hardware without the audience to earn back what I put in.

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@khaost Send every developer who earns over a given amount yearly a unit for free, on the terms that they port their app. I bet that'd work.

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @khaost That is big Apple energy there.

In general, the whole Vision launch is strange. You'd think it would be a priority to help developers with. For example, I can't even get a response from the US evangelist team (forwarded on from my region’s evangelist) about Vision + HomeKit questions as they're now supposedly busy with WWDC.

I find it very frustrating that App Store Connect leans on Dun and Bradstreet for a bunch of their business verification requirements. Anytime I interact with that company in ANY way I will then receive a steady stream of solicitations and spam for weeks to come, both in emails and phone calls.

My most recent interaction with them to update things for the new DSA requirements has started this barrage back up again.

😞

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@_Davidsmith @rafa I've got the same problem here. Old personal account's address is being used on the compliance form instead of my business one.

My new paywall system is now connected to RevenueCat.

Testing out using targeting to setup offerings per specific apps as defaults as a workaround.

Also tempted to try out placements so I can do different offers per spot in the app long term.

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@MuseumShuffle I've built my own system. I probably could have used theirs but wanted some more customisation available to me for into the future when I offer shared subscriptions.

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@MuseumShuffle I think for standard paywalls that their system would work great. If I didn't have the future plans that I do have, I would have just used theirs. I did test it out early on and it was really nice to use.

TL;DR since this is confusing a bunch of folks: If you make money on the App Store, you are a Trader, and under the DSA are required to provide a postal address, email address, and phone number, that will all be displayed publicly on the App Store

(Google Play has had similar rules for years, so if you publish on Android you might be familiar with this)

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith You know, Apple could just have just gotten one of their lawyers on this to make it clear.

Some days I wish Apple just allowed for paid updates. Would be so simple.

aaron_pearce, to random

How to justify a subscription app:

I need to continuously feed myself and my family each month. That is the ongoing cost to the apps development.

aaron_pearce, to random
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

Thinking on the branding for a potential subscription bundle of my apps.

All the apps are named Home{insert thing here}, so trying think along those lines without much success.

aaron_pearce, to random
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

This might have something to it.

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs the fun part of this, it’d be developing it blind if I do HomeKit as I can’t get the simulator to pair to the HomeKit simulator but it is doable.

aaron_pearce,
@aaron_pearce@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs yeah, I think it is doable, just awkward.
