@daringfireball FWIW here’s a bookmarklet to convert the currently-viewed Google search to the new clean “Web” view:

javascript:document.location+='&udm=14'

To use in Safari, for example: bookmark any random page temporarily, and then you can edit the address to this instead. If you make this one of your top several Favorites, you can access it quickly just by tapping the URL bar.

@daringfireball Well said!

I’d never disagree with making iPadOS more powerful, flexible, or even Mac-like, because a Mac is the best tool for ME for most things.

But I know many people who are SO MUCH more productive on iPadOS (now, even before WWDC) than on a Mac. They would give an uncomprehending blank stare at the Mac capabilities some long-time computer reviewers demand that iPad must share.

I’m glad we have two different platforms—BUT also glad that they keep learning from each other!

@daringfireball I consider an eraser-end nearly certain: see the “flip” animation the event logo has.

But I’ve never wanted it: flipping the whole stylus must be the worst, slowest, most awkward way to change tools ever devised.

It does have historical familiarity, and sounds good on the surface. It’s fun.

But to execute constantly all day? A button (or squeeze that feels like one) is better than a flip. So is a double-tap, a swipe, or even a little shake!

And the pointy end is more precise.

@daringfireball Nobody should make white products (or black ones)—they show dirt! But I must have lucked out with my white Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro—which I got as soon as they were released, and have used every day since.

It still looks pretty much like new. I even eat while using it, and have NEVER cleaned it. (But no BBQ, no chocolate fondue.)

Photo taken just now. (Outside is equally pristine.)

I don’t at all doubt the photos from people who have trashed theirs, but mine has done great!

TL;DR since this is confusing a bunch of folks: If you make money on the App Store, you are a Trader, and under the DSA are required to provide a postal address, email address, and phone number, that will all be displayed publicly on the App Store

(Google Play has had similar rules for years, so if you publish on Android you might be familiar with this)

adamsimmersive,
@adamsimmersive@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Interesting. I am hoping to add a paid feature set to my years-old free app.

So I THINK I can just keep the app available in the EU but disable the IAP there?

Those users won’t get the optional paid features, and I won’t get any money from them (or maybe from a tip jar alone).

But I can live with that vs. taking it away from the EU: users really like my weird, opinionated app even as it is, and it’s a passion project for me.

And if the IAP really takes off, I can reconsider!

@daringfireball Seems needlessly complex as written out, BUT I do like that the upshot matches exactly how I like to manage power:

🟢 Green light ALWAYS means I have no reason to be plugged in (whether I already am or not).

🟠 Orange light ALWAYS means I do want to be plugged in (whether I already am or not.)

It works because when I plug in, I generally would like to leave it until fully charged. And when I choose to roam free, I often prefer not to stay unplugged too much below 50%.

How long before Apple Vision Pro inspires a horror movie where you’re just working along in an environment and you notice… a figure?

Look around in Yosemite, Mt. Hood, or Joshua Tree in Night mode. Check behind you. Peer into the distance. Are you sure nobody is there?

Will you ever be sure?

adamsimmersive, to VisionPro
@adamsimmersive@mastodon.social avatar

One of the most immersive Apple Vision Pro experiences for me is one of the simplest: stand arm’s length from a big wall in my living room, dial the crown to about 180° immersion, and it’s as though my wall is gone and opens onto real scenery.

At full 360° you can’t walk more than a step before the environment fades away for safety, but at 180° you can take several steps back and forth. Feels very real! A great view while thinking or on a phone call.

Here’s a video of SIX ways to resize windows in Apple Vision Pro.

“Size” can mean…

• Amount of your view a window occupies in degrees

• Amount of workspace it contains for UI/content

• Physical size in the world

• Size in screen pixels (an indirect and variable factor)

Example: a small workspace that only fits a few items could be large in the world, if the fonts/UI are big. Or vice versa. Either way, the size in your view depends on distance.

Apple Weather's 12-hour precipitation map takes so long to load in every time that 9/10 times I just close it and give up. Is that a universal experience? Or are Apple's local CDNs just abnormally slow here?

This progress bar either stalls or takes upwards of 30 seconds to resolve.

adamsimmersive,
@adamsimmersive@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith it’s about 50/50 for me on iPhone, iPad, and Mac alike. Sometimes the map loads quickly, sometimes it won’t load at all, and often it’s just extremely slow.

@stroughtonsmith He played ping pong. Real-world physical ping pong. Through Apple Vision Pro. Not like “I sort of managed this” but with no trouble at all—and the footage to prove it! Pretty amazing 🏓

I’ve never understood the position that passthrough AR is somehow “not AR” even though it’s… augmenting reality. Seems like an implementation detail. But it does appear that not all passthrough is created equal…

Wait, the Vision Pro battery pack is 3166 mAh?

Why doesn't it come with a 20,000mAh pack and get 12 hours out of the box? Why is the battery pack made out of metal 😵‍💫

adamsimmersive,
@adamsimmersive@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Maybe they kept the battery pocket-sized so that possible future Visions with internal batteries aren’t seen as having a big battery life drop. (Pockets are convenient too.)

I think the locking cable is because accidental power loss could cause data loss and symptoms. (It’s not greed, since it makes extra Apple batteries less tempting than existing cheap packs.) For those wishing Apple Vision Pro had a backup battery to allow hot swapping, the pocket battery IS the backup.

We can all agree that EyeSight just doesn’t begin to achieve what it set out to, right? There is a whole lot of weight, battery and component expense dedicated to this feature, and it doesn’t make me feel like I can see Joanna at all

adamsimmersive,
@adamsimmersive@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I think without studio light glare you will be able to see the eyes and get value from that.

The eyes will be dim and soft compared to uncovered eyes, but they seem to achieve the goal anyway: make eye contact POSSIBLE. That sounds much better than having a blank slab and leaving people to wonder whether you’re looking at them or not. (As if that’s not “creepy.”)

I feel like EyeSight is there to be useful, not trying to “fool” people into thinking you don’t have a headset on.

Apple Vision Pro’s displays contain nearly 70 million LED lights, each 1/3 the size of a red blood cell. I can see why mass producing them might be a challenge.

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

I keep seeing it floated that 'if you have a million users, and you don't have a way to make money, what are you even doing?’, which is incredibly toxic. Screw everybody who provides free software/tools, I guess?

I guarantee you every single one of you relies on software that has more than a million users and makes $0, somewhere in your tech stack.

Having a single app like that in your portfolio, even if you have robust paid apps, could be enough to bankrupt you under Apple's CTF proposal

adamsimmersive,
@adamsimmersive@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I keep thinking of my free list-making app (Mind Magnets, v.3 coming) which ADHD folks and visual thinkers seem to really like. I’d like to add a one-time paid feature upgrade in future.

My model then: useful for free, better for a one-time purchase. My app does need new features currently, but not endless bloat: it works in its own simple, clean, flexible way. So subscriptions won’t make sense. And I hate ads.

If only a fraction of users pay, I’ll still want the app to exist!

I'm so tired of hearing people's increasingly-cynical impressions of the third or fourth time they've received the exact same Vision Pro demo experience from Apple 😅

I can't wait 'till real people actually have this thing and start talking about it.

I wish Apple was taking these demo opportunities to reveal just a little more about their upcoming, unfinished first party apps. What is coming 3, 6, 9 months down the line? How are they going to reimagine their advanced/pro apps for it?

adamsimmersive,
@adamsimmersive@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith GarageBand and/or Logic could be amazing with AR instruments! (And a long project if so.) And how about Maps? Swift Playgrounds? Final Cut Pro? Cool new timeline UIs?

Apple Vision Pro has the weight of about three iPhones in cases. So it’s like having maybe two on your face, and one on top of your head. I can see then how people with the necks of baby swans might become cynical after a lot of repetition. Apple hasn’t really varied these sessions much at all!

adamsimmersive,
@adamsimmersive@mastodon.social avatar

@macrumors More accurately: they didn’t express to the Verge any disappointment with the EU iPhone browser change itself. They seem to like it enough that they want it applied elsewhere too!

Specifically, they wish the EU change was not EU-specific but worldwide, and that it applied to iPad, not just iPhone. Otherwise they have to maintain two versions. Seems like a reasonable desire to me!

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

I think most of what Apple is proposing is acceptable, even good. I think the specifics on the Core Technology Fee need a little tweaking (i.e. free apps in or out of App Store shouldn't be bankrupted by 1M+1 users), and I hope the EU negotiates on that point.

It makes sense to require proof of a $1M line of credit to run an alternative app store, just so everybody isn't making one.

This is all very similar to what I proposed yesterday.

adamsimmersive,
@adamsimmersive@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Do apps that stay INSIDE Apple’s EU App Atore still have to pay the Core Tech fee? Or is that fee just for alternative app sources?

(And I agree, free apps already pay ~$100 a year for developer membership—that should be sufficient!)

You can apparently scan TWO people for fit, and receive two DIFFERENT head band sizes in the box—with some extra steps:

  1. Optional—you can Add to Bag more than once to view the scanned sizing in case it varies.

  2. Pre-order the size YOU want.

  3. Add to Bag to view sizing for the OTHER person.

  4. Call Apple and ask them to change ONE of the two band’s sizes. (I called and changed both, but they did give me the option.)

Still only ONE face shield.
