Sam Alito Flew Seditionist Flag Outside His House in 2021
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/05/17/alito-sedition

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@nickclements Alito is the most dangerous right winger of the bunch, but he doesn't take bribes like Clarence Thomas does, so he lives on the modest SCOTUS salary.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@swingerofbirch I disagree vehemently with all the Republicans on the Court, but Thomas and Alito are in worlds of their own. Thomas for his abject corruption, Alito for being the de facto leader of the bunch and a rightwing fascist sociopath.

AC/DC - "Whole Lotta Rosie" (Live, 1977)

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@hotdogsladies Is there anything in the world that sounds more like 1977 than that? (Spoiler: no.)

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Gte @hotdogsladies All joking aside. Star Wars is more iconic, for something that happened to come out in 1977. But nothing about Star Wars screams "1977” to me. The music in particularly is timeless. Whereas that AC/DC performance just screams "1977” to me.

Sugar, on Apple TV+, is one of the weirdest shows I have watched in a while. I think I really enjoyed it? I have no idea who to recommend it to, but if you like stuff that's kind of different, check it out.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@dmoren Agreed. It’s like you took the words out of my mouth. And the less anyone knows before watching it the better.

Also: I really like the 35-minute-ish episode length. “Servant” did the same. It made me realize how rigidly the TV industry has treated dramas and sitcoms since the dawn of TV. Drama = 60 minutes; sitcom = 30 minutes.

Why not 30-minute-ish drama episodes? It’s good!

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@dmoren Such an interesting show. My favorite little sequence was the series of scenes between Sugar and the homeless guy with the dog. Could've been so corny, but felt so genuine and poignant.

Thank you, @cabel, for the hundreds of new followers. Just a heads-up to all the new people. You’re not going to get much Tech True Crime on my feed. I post a lot of retrocomputing stuff, but you’re also going to get leftist politics, ridiculing cryptocurrency and generative AI, San Francisco Giants baseball, and atrocious puns. Also geezer reminiscing about Good Music. Be warned,

@gruber Hiya, random question if you don't mind: Your original Markdown post had a suggested $50 fee for commercial use, did you ever get any payouts from that?

One of the earliest examples of trying to monetize open source! Curious how successful it was in that era.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@shazow Couple hundred bucks total. Maybe $1000 after a year or two? It didn’t work. Everything was easier just giving up on monetizing it all and setting it free with a BSD style license.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@shazow But when I say it didn’t work, I should also add that I didn’t push hard with new ways to try to get donations for it. Daring Fireball itself started taking off financially around 2006 and that was good enough for me. I consider Markdown part of my work at DF, and I’m proud not to have a paywall for my writing or for Markdown.

@daringfireball @gruber I noticed this a moment ago using Reeder in iOS. Any idea what causes this difference in appearance?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@luckie_reubs Nope. No idea. Just checked here and I see the same thing. Also with the “Sam Altman Puts the Kibosh on…” post from a week ago. If you can figure it out, I’d love to know the explanation. But I have always found Reeder a bit inscrutable (and I’ve never been comfortable with its branding, to be honest).

If you subscribe to DF’s JSON feed, the entries are all treated correctly.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@josh I haven’t changed anything, so unless someone can prove otherwise, I blame Reeder. (If you switch from DF’s RSS feed to JSON feed, the problem goes away.)

@benny No question about it. That's what makes them Pepsi. The whole company is based around the idea of being a #2 that copies whoever is #1. When BlackBerry was #1 Samsung sold ripoffs named BlackJacks, copying everything right down to the CamelCase “Black___" name.

@amigalove @limi Worked out really well for Commodore.

gruber,

@amigalove @limi Don’t get me wrong. I will admit I never used a Commodore 128, but I had friends with the C64 in the 80s and it was great. And Amiga, of course, was a full decade ahead of its time in some ways. Video Toaster!

But I’m saying that an ad campaign like this betrays a mindset at a company that is destined to lose.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@amigalove @limi When was Apple at its nadir, in genuine danger of disappearing? When they ran ads like this:

cdevroe, to random
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber You'll appreciate this, or, you'll wish I hadn't sent this to you. In the HIG, Apple clearly states that primary buttons should be “on the trailing side”. Under Components > Menus and actions > Buttons, they include this image…

Do they do this just to confuse us? Or, am I misreading the HIG?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@cdevroe Seems like a mistake to me. I can't see how it couldn't be. Although the advice to order the primary button "on the trailing side" isn't on that page, it's on the Presentation → Alerts page, so maybe someone there thinks this example is not alert-like enough for that to apply?

But I agree with you. It just rubs my eye for UI idioms wrong to see this.

@gruber You mentioned iPadOS being separate from iOS by marketing brand only on a recent podcast.

The clearest sign of this is in Xcode. There’s no distinct iPadOS, only iOS:
