I also got bored last night and posted a cool looking Rufous Legged Owl, so if you sort by last 6 or 12 hours, go back and check that one out!

EDIT - By request I have added leg pics of the Rofius Legged Owl to that post!

I’ve been trying to put up some non-US owls for those that the state specific things don’t apply to. I’m eyeing up some good Australian and New Zealand owls for this weekend’s posts.

Dang, I think I like that better!

Thank you! I do appreciate the feedback. I try to do more than just Google pictures. I like showing off the unique species and what you can see in your neighborhood. I try to find places where you can meet the owls in person and maybe support the rescues or find an opportunity to volunteer.

Some places where rescues are more available are pretty easy, but some states don’t have many organizations to begin with, let alone ones that can have visitors, so some posts take me a while to do.

If you ever have any requests, I’ll try to find something good for you. I try to keep it varied, but if you guys get tired of one kind of owl or want more of another, let me know! We’ve had a bunch of Screech Owls lately, but they seem to be popular, but the Great Horned Owls I also really like haven’t seemed to get the same response. I also try to get out of the US lately on weekends, so there’s something for non-US people when the most eyes are on the page.

I’ve kinda taken over this place by default since nobody posts, but I try to give something to everybody. The sub count had really grown, but it’d still be nice to get more posts or comments, so everyone don’t be afraid to say something, even if it’s relatively off topic. I like when we talk mythology or cultural traditions or owl art or anything like that. I haven’t heard a peep from the mods, so bring up whatever you want as far as I care. If it’s owl related, I’ll chat about it. If like to see this community flourish in more than a meme picture type way.

Ok, yapping too much, I’ll shut up now! 😇

Also someone please bump that Tawny Owl post from the weekend over 300 likes. It’s soooooo close at 297.

I like seeing us on the Top list! We need more recruits!

I like MA. I was excited to go to Provincetown and climb the tower there to see the “tip of the boot.”

I also did the Salem Witch Museum, the Mayflower/Plymouth Rock, the Plymouth Plantation, and the Edward Gorey House.

Yeah, I was glad I was warned to have low expectations. It looks like it fell down a sewer drain. But the whole story seems kinda BS to begin with, so yeahhhhh. 😅

Hey, you’re alive! 😉

I’m glad someone is watching over the place. I like keeping this place active, but I don’t want any real responsibilities, just to post things to make everyone smile.

Yes, I’ve got my bases covered now no matter which one it is!

Pointy chicuatli and smooth chicuatli!

Second hand accounts by ancient great great grandparents aren’t reliable sources if historically accurate information?! Who wouldn’t try to land a wooden ship on a rocky shore in rough, frigid ocean waters?

From Wikipedia for anyone OOTL:

The first documented claim Plymouth Rock was the landing place of the Pilgrims was made by 94-year-old Thomas Faunce in 1741, 121 years after the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth.

That was harder than I would have expected! Most pictures of them not perched in trees sitting on their legs have them with leather straps for handling covering the rufous part. All of the ones of them not covered in leather seem to be stock photos, so I don’t know how those guys gets all the bare legs and the nature sites don’t have them, but hey…

Rufous just means reddish/brown, so not necessarily extra superb, just a specific color. I like them though!

I love when these threads start to different from just cute pictures!

The translation does seem to be pretty confusing. Looking at online Nahuatl dictionaries, some do call it a Barn Owl, while some a Screech Owl. So I looked thought, you can’t get much more distinct than a tuftless, large, Barn Owl and a small, round, tufted Screech Owl, so let’s look at some pictures!

Chicuatli Glyphs

I can’t read this page, but some have definite tufts like a Screech Owl, then there’s one that looks much more like a vulture, and then ones with facial discs like a Barn Owl.

With Spanish using lechuza for the Barn Owl and witch lady, I don’t know if that further complicated things translating them into modern language.

One source also said the name was after the sound the bird made, but since I don’t know how to pronounce chicuatli, that doesn’t help me very much.

Screeches love scritches!

anon6789,
@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

I did read that one too. That’s where I saw they get the name from the sound, but I accidentally posted before I was finished.

Looking at the distribution maps of both owls, the Screech Owls dont seem to be in the Pacific coast, so could it just be a localized thing? If you have an animal that’s important to your beliefs, but you wind up in a place without those, maybe they just adapted to what they had there.

What is the most surprising Aztec fact you’ve come across? I don’t know too much beyond a chapter or 2 from high school history class.

@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

The first fact is definitely interesting, but the second is the type of surprise I was hoping for!

Just from reading the Mexican Featherwork on Wikipedia, the was a ton of information in there. It’s strange to think if the same people performing human sacrifice and also doing such delicate and fancy art. Birds in general seem to be very prominent in there beliefs. I’ll have to check this out more.

Thanks!

No, I’m on the wrong continent to see these guys.

This is from eBird.org.

Ivan Sjogren from Stockholm is listed as photographer.

Most every place I have visited animals seems to be pretty well run. They’re generally clean, have have employees, and are focused on conservation or rehabilitation.

There was one near me once that was a bad experience. This “zoo” was supposed to be in a mid sized town near me that I was not aware had a zoo. A person I worked with always wanted to pet a tiger, and they advertised a photo op with a baby white tiger, so I said I’d go with her.

It was located in an industrial park, and the animals were basically in a windowless warehouse. The cats were all pacing restlessly and the birds were very nervous looking. After we paid admission, we learned the tiger was too restless, so there was no photos being done anyway. So not only did we not get what we paid for, we essentially ended up paying to be depressed by everything else we saw.

The place was shut down pretty soon after. The person is went with eventually got there tiger photo at a park in Florida, which was probably Carol Baskin’s place. This was all pre-Tiger King.

So this is what have me apprehensive about promoting this place, but they seem to display all their licenses and such right on their website, so it seems legitimate.

I try to keep all my posts positive, since that seems to be the theme of the original sub, but without being too graphic, have any of you had any similar experiences?
