Okay, some data center jockey tells you he's "splitting a NIC".

Does he mean:

@TerryHancock He takes an axe to the NIC

How much RAM do you consider the minimum acceptable for a new PC?

attilakinali,
@attilakinali@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@mansr For me it's 64GB. Anything less and I'm sure I'd have to upgrade somewhen in the next 3-4 years. Especially with how fast web browsers are still consuming memory.

I brought back two nice teas from my taiwan travel. While putting them in my tea drawer, I realized I had an unopened package of lovely green tea from my japan trip in 2018 😬
It is still really tasty though! 🍵

SMD tools question; wth do you use to hold an SMD device on a bench while working on it by itself? I've just been very lucky to find my LED I was cleaning off after it flicked across the bench. (It's about 4mmx1mmx1mm )

attilakinali,
@attilakinali@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@rogerggbr @penguin42 Advice from someone who soldered way too much SMD in his life: invest in quality tweezers. They may cost 50€, but the investment is really worth it. They grab so much better and are a lot more comfortable to hold. Heck, after a year, you will probably saved more money in components you haven't lost than the tweezers did cost.

I wish people would stop saying "exponentially" when they just mean "a lot".

"0.0001% more" is "exponentially more"... literally.

Like, "literally literally", because people don't think "literally" means "literally" anymore, either. :muppets_waldorf:

Funny thing - when you read more scholarly histories of science it's amazing the extent to which nobody is ever that far ahead of the field. Even people we think of as rebels - Einstein, Cantor, Darwin, were firmly inside existing discussions and movements. I remember one author saying good scientists are a year ahead of the field, great ones are 5, the greatest are 10, and more and more that seems right, even generous.

attilakinali,
@attilakinali@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@ZachWeinersmith Scientist here.

Lone geniuses are a thing. But they are about as common as rainbow farting pink unicorns. Most of the science comes to be because a million people are struggling with the same problem. And one has the "brilliant" idea how to solve it, after thousands of other ideas failed.

You know, declaring war on Mexico was basically my go-to comparison for how stupid, illegal, and just plain evil it was for Putin to invade Ukraine.

Like, if the USA did this, the world would be justified in massive sanctions and military aid to Mexico to defeat us.

So naturally, the Party of the Stupid, Evil, and Illegal decides this is a Great Idea™ that they'd like to push.

And I just can't even. 🤦‍♂️

@TerryHancock I think anyone who calls for war should first be sent into a war zone as an infantryman/woman for a year. After they are back, we might talk again.

stux, to Russia
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

The thing that really bugs me about the death of is how most of us accepted this "truth" from

But since when is there any form of real tuth in what the Kremlin says..

I would love to believe it but keep in mind they are 'professional liers' and terrorirst led by a brutal dictator who has lost touch with reality..

Everything from the Kremlin is in a quantum state, always and forever

attilakinali,
@attilakinali@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@stux And why does it matter whether he is really dead or not? If he isn't dead, he better keep is head down and pretend to be dead. Otherwise someone might take an issue with his vigor and make sure reality matches the narrative.

He has been effectively removed from heading Wagner and that's the only thing that really matters. Everything else is just embellishment. And that's probably the reason why most people accept the news "at face value", even though there is a chance he is still alive.

@mansr Why do you want to cause us physical pain?!?

TerryHancock, to random
@TerryHancock@realsocial.life avatar

Hmm.

How does rsync know that a file has "changed"?

Relative to what?

Does it keep track of when it was last run?

Is there some kind of hidden file that it's using? Is it marking the files somehow?

Or does "changed" just mean "relative to the destination"?

And if it's that, then why is there an "update" option?

The man page is kind of vague on this.

Just want to make sure I'm not going to accidentally destroy important data.

attilakinali,
@attilakinali@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@TerryHancock it compares the stat/lstat data between source and destination, if that's the same, the files are assumed to be the same. If they differ, or you told rsync to ignore it, it will then start to block wise calculate checksums (multiple) and compare them on both sides so that only those blocks that are actually different need to be transfered.

People seem to be very negative about this new wind-powered cargo ship; but it seems pretty good to me! This isn't just tacking sails onto an existing ship, and wind power by itself is pretty useless for a cargo ship these days.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-66543643

attilakinali,
@attilakinali@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@penguin42 Well, it's just tacking sails to an existing ship. But these sails are made of modern, rigid materials instead of floppy cloth. And they are computer controlled for optimal efficiency.

attilakinali,
@attilakinali@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@penguin42 I never said it was easy. 😉

But yes, having any kind of propulsion system on deck, that is not close to the main force distribution system (aka keel) requires proper design and cannot be just jerry rigged.

That's why kites are so popular with cargo ships: they can be attached to hard points that have been already designed to take up considerable load.

And that's only considering the forces but none of the stuff you've mentioned.

So, I've been growing eggplant in the garden and now cooking it a lot, and one interesting thing is that it just slurps up oil when you fry it. I had thought of eggplant as useful for soaking up strong flavors, but it partly also sucks up fat, which is probably why restaurant versions of eggplant are so much tastier.

attilakinali,
@attilakinali@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@ZachWeinersmith If you want to really know how to make eggplants properly, find a Turkish guy/gall who cooks and let them show you the wonders of Turkish eggplant dishes.

What's the best smartphone with a jack?

Other criteria:

  • Long support period for security updates
  • Easy to repair
  • Open source software, firmware and hardware would be ideal

But I will give up phones before I give up my 3.5 mm headphone jack, that's a hard line for me.

EDIT: I'm requiring security updates into 2027, since Samsung offers that on two models I'm considering. That should help narrow the field.

attilakinali,
@attilakinali@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@skyfaller The EU is solving the security update issue. With the passing of the amendment 2023/3538 of Regulation 2023/826 on 16.6.23, all manufactures will soon provide 5 years of security updates. Unfortunately, they are only required to do that for any product that is sold after August 2025.

But my guess is that most smartphones released this year will be still sold in two years, so manufacturers will have to support them until 2030.
