@sysadmin1138 I just saw your 20 years blogging post... I have one for the same anniversary scheduled for the end of this month 😅

It's funny how many things came and went in this time!

(While I'm still looking for the right thing…)

Wait, they crimp CAT6 how, nowadays?

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005964442111.html

Maybe I should buy a bunch, looks easier to crimp compared to the 5e I used to!

What's the name for those plastic bits that you screw in on top of a cable, when wiring a plug yourself?

I'm looking at building something where I want to tie down a cable, and I would rather not 3D print those bits when I could buy them in bulk… but I don't know how to find them >_<

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@viq not that — but as it turns out when I went and looked to point at what I wanted, I found the word "cable grip."

Let me see if that helps!

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@viq (Nope. That's worse than what I was looking at at least on AliExpress.)

They opened with SHUM, and still managed to hold the crowd for a full hour. Would watch again.

@chrisjrn Go_A are fantastic. Went to see them twice in 13 months 🤩

I'm glad we went in not knowing any of the songs, because...

... wtf Ireland?

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@chrisjrn no spoilers!

Though "WTF Ireland" is a common feeling for me.

flameeyes,

@chrisjrn WTF Ireland.

(Though, Australia was chef's kiss)

What's the best book on nonlinear storytelling/narrative you've read? (Boosts appreciated)

flameeyes,

@tante Writing Excuses, the podcast, has covered this a few times. Not a book though.

Once we get past the for-hire security people, we'll be in the one place in the world where we don't have to explain what is, and I am quite excited.

flameeyes,

@chrisjrn ooooh congrats! We'll be looking forward to see you on the stream then 😉

flameeyes,

@chrisjrn I'm not discounting that, nowadays.

I actually finished it! My little writeup on #cilium and #ipv6 peering with #bird: https://farcaller.net/2024/making-cilium-bgp-work-with-ipv6/ where I try to convince cilium to propagate the ipv6 routes to my vm host.

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@farcaller I gave up and went for WordPress.

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@farcaller that's too much tinkering for what I have energy for.

I would gladly pay someone else to run WP for me, even, but Automattic gave up caring for bloggers a long time ago.

Delighted by this opinion piece trolling SFO for thinking it has the right to exclusive use of "San Francisco" 😂 https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/article/sfo-oakland-airport-names-san-mateo-19435784.php

flameeyes,

@josh sigh I wish it didn't try to tell me I have an adblocker I don't have though.

But also, if nobody pointed out the London Southend Airport...

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@josh yeah, sometimes they come handy (I gladly flew to Beauvais once because that's where my best friend got married), sometimes not (Malpensa being nowhere near Milan is annoying already, the fact that their transport system is a mess is another story.)

I am, once again, wondering why tricycles, in the sense of full grown adult sized cycles with two rear wheels (with or without cargo) are not normalised.

They somehow feel like they shouldn't need as much engineering as it's pushed on to build cargo bikes, and they would be something I wouldn't mind using myself, rather than risk my life due to being barely able to balance a bike.

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@Sweetshark is that meant to be a negative, when going around town?

I'm not saying "ban two wheels", I'm saying that I'd rather take the tradeoff of going slow, and still having an option, rather than "You get to choose between four or two, or you'll walk because neither group likes you" that seems to be the case now.

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@eliasp I wonder if that influenced or is influenced by infrastructure.

The reason why I said "normalized" is because I have only looked at tricycles a few years ago because I was told to consider using the cycleways they're building around me — and I got reminded of it as they're doing work to open a new piece of Cycleway 9 not far from me.

At the time, some of the cycleways appeared to be narrower than most tricycles. And none of the cycle parking options would fit them anyway.

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@eliasp yeah I wonder if the fact that cargo bikes are becoming more common, means that I could reconsider the option. I haven't really cycled at all since feeling like I risked my life on the obnoxious turn at College Green in Dublin.

I'll take a look at what the infrastructure looks once we find our next place :)

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@Sweetshark that's the thing — no I don't want car-like, or I would go… well, car-like, or even car. I have considered getting a Twizy before I left Italy, and honestly I'm saddened that's not more common to this day. But that's not what I'm looking at.

I'm looking at all of the amount of "healthy" options, and thinking it would be easy to make it more inclusive… by not telling people wanting a trade-off to go away.

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@Sweetshark yeah it looks like you folks may actually have a decent amount of options there! — Now I'm envious, because i would totally want to be able to do this in London 😢

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@jelmer @Sweetshark yeah that's what I was pointing out in the other fork of the conversation

Intentionally Permissive Licensing

I decided to write down my personal views on licensing and why most of my projects are licensed under permissive licenses, rather than copyleft.
