TIL you don't have to use GPG for git signing. You can use an SSH key as a signing key for git commits. Weirdly enough git still calls it a “GPG” with the format “SSH”

git config --global gpg.format ssh
git config --global user.signingkey /PATH/TO/.SSH/KEY.PUB

Tech history is full of pioneering companies who eventually couldn’t parlay their first mover advantage into long term dominance. This is what happened with IBM and the PC, TiVo and the DVR, and Nokia and the smartphone.

The trillion dollar question is if this will be Tesla’s fate with the electric car?

bartek,

@carnage4life I'm not sure these are the best analogies. Especially Nokia, which prior to dropping the ball on touch screen smartphones has absolutely dominated the cell phone market in the general and early smartphone market (outside of the US market, where BlackBerry was the dominant smartphone). To the point I feel like BlackBerry is much better analogy.

WTH is that? Keeps riding bike paths in my neighborhood followed by two dudes on a tricycle.

Nothing like getting your news from objective and authoritative sources on Twitter/X. Oh…

bartek,

@carnage4life WarMonitors is also staunchly pro-Russian, which is probably why Musk follows them in the first place.

This is an informative article about how scalpers keep staying two steps ahead of Ticketmaster and no one can buy tickets.

Ticketmaster uses a “verified fan” algorithm that takes buying history, account age, and geographic location to determine whether that account can have a chance to buy tickets for specific shows.

Scalpers buy used Ticketmaster accounts, use credit cards that offer presale tickets and custom browsers that can load one account per tab as workarounds.

https://www.404media.co/why-scalpers-can-get-olivia-rodrigo-tickets-and-fans-cannot/

bartek,

@carnage4life scalpers resell these tickets directly on TM, which doesn't have any real incentive to stop it. This way it's double dipping, first TM gets hefty margins and frees on the initial sale than even heftier margins and fees on much higher value resale. They've been operating this way for decades.

The 2×4 standard for dimensional construction lumber size is...

bartek,

@haljor with clothing size every country has it's own slightly different definition, so it gets complicated fast. They should just do a thing with numeric sizes like with shoes or pants.

I've been using my gaming PC for personal projects, and damn, it's such a step up from 2020 Intel MBP 16" (a $3,500 original price). Especially working with multiple Docker containers. My machine is 4 years old, not really top end, but with 48GB of RAM and i7 with 8 cores / 16 threads @ 5.10GHz it runs circles around 16GB RAM and i7 with 4 cores / 8 threads @ 2.8GHz. Why did we buy into this BS that a laptop can be a workstation replacement?

(Yeah, I know the situation is better with M2)

Turns out it's far worse than Bethesda being just too lazy to optimize ..

The idea that ads are bad so instead you should pay $10-$20 a month for every newsletter, podcast, streaming service, social network or news site is slowly being revealed as untenable and elitist.

However so many entities have invested so much of their brand and credibility blaming ads for every online problem, we’re entering a new era of enshitification online because they can’t walk back their positions.

bartek,

@carnage4life on the flip side the AdTech industry is so heavily invested in microtargeting verging on stalking, that there's absolutely no way for them to go back to the acceptable, non-invasive traditional ads model.

@lcamtuf I mean they do sound like nonsense, but then again I don't think they sound significantly different from what a junior copywriter could have produced.

    bartek,

@lcamtuf indeed. This is going to be bad...

    bartek,

@JPruente @lcamtuf counterpoint: on eBay the default assumption is that seller might be a scammer, and it's up to the seller to convince you that they are trustworthy. A BS GPT generates description undermines that.
