Many people canceled their Openai subscriptions, or it is tough to monetize stuff created with generative AI, I guess, so Sama comes with a new plan to use all those GPUs. They are now going after OF models. WTF OpenAI? They are going to allow deepfake? This company is beyond evil 👿

@littlefox https://github.com/LittleFox94/lf-os_amd64 I like that you can actually find that by just searching for 'lf os'

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@koffiekat a brother of mine bought a shack in the middle of the woods of sweden, it's about 10-20km hiking from the nearest bit of civilization/infrastructure, there's no running water or electricity, and apparently there are more such places out there

consider donating half (or even a tenth) of what you would've paid for the commercial alternative, to the free/opensource projects you're using instead.

Imagine how much these could develop if everyone paid the same as they pay commercial parties, we could easily make these the dominant tools we use; a world where all the tools are available to everyone regardless of income is a hell of a way to provide equity to the creators of the world, similar to what UBI would do ✨

Who would win: The forb or the foxarella stick?

anthropy, (edited )
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@volpeon tough one, the Foxarella stick is in full battleform and has their :drgn_scream: ready to engage, whereas the Forb is in defense form and can likely shrug off damage like a tank.

Could be a tie, depends if the Foxarella stick gets eepy (not unlikely)

you might've heard of disney's 360 treadmill project, but do you know how it works? This video is a nice demo

Apparently it's made up out of little cones that can tilt in any direction, with little rotating disks on top. By tilting the cones such that only one side of the disk touches a surface that's on the grid, and rotating the disks, you can move anything in any direction on the grid of cones.

oh man Intel is struggling to keep up with AMD

The 14900KS draws more power on 1 core than an ENTIRE 7800X3D at 100% full load all cores

the 96-core Threadripper uses less power than the 14900KS, the 14900KS being an 8-core CPU.

why would anyone still pick Intel like this, especially in the server market they're just completely irrelevant right now, but also desktop; their E cores use more power than AMD's cores that also outrun the P-cores with ease 😶
Hope that the 18/20A process will help 😅

Have something cursed, because I beer'd my laptop and it made the keyboard sticky. I'm too lazy to take it apart entirely just to fix the keyboard, so I'm just dousing it in distilled water :drgn_3c_evil:

It'll be fine.. Probably. Likely. Hopefully. Only one way to find out and that's Science! :bongo:

Video of a sink where someone is holding a laptop, the keyboard keys aren't working well (sticky) and are making crackling noises, so the laptop (with the full mobo still inside) gets hosed off with distilled water

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@osric I literally just booted it up and it's fine! Keys aren't sticky anymore either

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

Still works! Also keys no longer sticky!

It seems completely dry, but I'm gonna heat it up a bit with some benchmarks to get the last bits out that may be stuck under chips and such; the biggest danger is galvanic corrosion over time if there's still some water in there (altho distilled water should be very high impedance)

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@gavi tbh I'd take people venting over people masking any day, facebook and such are so.. fake? from the makeup to the general portrayal of life, it's almost like everyone is trying to be a vlogger/youtuber/streamer/whatever character that's never sad and never has a bad day. People here just feel more real than in a lot of other places, and that's definitely therapeutic 😁

seeing a 'new' 'TunnelVision' attack where they (ab)use DHCP option 121 to introduce routes that redirect all traffic from the user to the attacker.

it doesn't.. really seem that new though? DHCP has always been a weak point, just set up a fast DHCP server and you can usually outrun the centralized ones and get clients in the same network to use you as their host, you could even set the default gateway that way and don't need option 121 🤷
not to mention all the crap you can pull with ARP poison

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@irenej I mean you could totally ARP poison the router if you manage to inject crap into its WAN port, or if there's a DNS server in the same network, or a domain controller.. I remember using Cain&Abel to completely take over a Novel Netware server because you could inject kerberos tickets that would validate you as the superadmin, you could even take out the normal admins if you wanted to 😛 this is why IPv6 has extended IPSEC so much, so you could actually secure these things (nobody does tho)

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@irenej it's been a really long while, I only vaguely remember messing with it and mostly following tutorials from underground forums, but I do wonder if you could replicate it today on a windows domain; Kerberos is historically very sensitive to ARP poisoning because it makes it very easy to steal tickets, and sometimes even generate your own (depending on how they verify the tickets)

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@irenej looks like it's harder these days because the tickets usually get cryptographically verified and there's mutual authentication going on. Back in the days with novel netware, IIRC, you could just steal a ticket and use it and adapt it for other things, like grabbing an admin ticket and setting your own account to be admin on the domain controller, but yea again its' all been a long while so I might get details wrong ^^; it's fun to mess with though! many things rely on network integrity

Does anyone have some good resources/tips on self-hosting a website?

Truthfully, it would probably be easier for me to NOT self-host, but where's the fun in that?

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@DaCutestCorvid you could also only set up a jekyll container like mentioned there and forward it to the internet, you could also make something in 'raw' html and present it to the world with nginx, the latter would probably be a bunch more work but gives you more flexibility, depends a little on your preferences

2024 in a nutshell

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@carnage4life as someone who has avoided mass layoffs at a profitable big tech company: LABOUR RIGHTS. The main reason I and a lot of Europeans weren't fired during these layoffs, is simply because it's not legal here; they'd have to prove their hardships, they have to backfill their open positions with the people they're trying to fire first, etc.

Fight for your rights, if the USA had EU-style labour rights, this kinda crap would be much, much less prevalent than it unfortunately is today.
