The term “content” is a barbarism that bit by bit devalues what journalists do.

I’ve been using the M3 MacBook Air for the last month. It’s the best all round laptop you can buy at the moment, but it’s not cheap. Here are the other things I learnt: https://billbennett.co.nz/apple-macbook-air-m3/

I think in all my years of dealing with some awful documentation, Western Digital’s MyCloud documentation and support takes things to a new level.

One thing that concerns me in discussions about cloud data sovereignty and the hyper scale cloud operators is: how can we be certain “sovereign” cloud databases are not included when local storage is backed up overseas?

Jo asked me to clear out the cat litter tray and said: "It's not a big job".

She was wrong.

When recipes call for a 4cm piece of ginger I feel like there was an agreement on uniformity in the two other dimensions that I missed.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@geordie I'd interpret that as 4cm by 4cm by 4cm and damn the torpedoes.

Talked to a very smart person this afternoon who reminded me: climate fatalism ("it's too late") is a soft form of denialism.

Everything we do from here is worthwhile. It counts, it makes a difference. No matter what damage has been done, we can still make things better than if we had done nothing. We can still look after the world, look after our friends and family. Action has results.

@stephen On a related note, political darkness thrives on a lack of hope.

@Smrki You ain't kidding. It is directly out of Orwell's 1984 where the TV screens spied on people. I don't think the billboards are hooked up to facial recognition yet. No doubt someone is, at least, thinking about it.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@Smrki It would be interesting to know if there are formal privacy provisions... such as destroying data. You'd hope that would be part of the consent process, but I wouldn't bank on it.

I didn't oo there because my interview was about the pipes, not the applications. I made a mental note to find out more about how that data is used.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@Smrki Is this something you are across Mr @thomasbeagle?

There are civil liberty implications.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@thomasbeagle @Smrki I'm not sure about Wellington, but in Auckland I mainly see these billboards when I'm driving. Are the rules about recognising cars (and presumably identifying the driver) different to recognising individuals?

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@thomasbeagle @Smrki The other thing, which could be Auckland-only, is the Act Party uses these billboards a lot. This isn't totalitarian China or Russia, and I'm extropaltigng a long way, but I could see a world where AI sentiment analysis being used to determine if political slogans make people angry or upset then compiling a database of subjects to round up for "reeducation".

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@thomasbeagle @Smrki I'm astounded by the autocorrect coming up with "extropaltigng", is that some AI thing?

I went outside a number of times last night but could see no sign of the lights in the sky from here in Auckland. Mind you, there’s a new block of town houses obscuring our view to the South. Perhaps I should have been a nimby after all.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@jackyan I'd expect Tawa to be south enough given the reports from elsewhere. There are people in and around Auckland who claim to have seen something.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@zl2tod @jackyan Yeah, I no longer have a southern horizon, just a row of brightly lit town houses. When we moved in here I could see the Milky Way at night, that's less the case today.

billbennett,

@mwt I recently paid 2degrees $8 a day to roam in Australia... made just one call and received a single call although I did get through a few text messages. It's not cheap, but I don't resent that kind of charge. I did hate it when I was in Aus years ago on the Spark network and was hit with about $30 for a single call.
