"A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back"

You ain't kidding.

@thomasbeagle In my opinion Windows has been awful for over a decade. I'm constantly surprised that the majority is happy to put up with it.

When right-wing politicians talk about “the good old days” or some similar concept, most of the warm-glow memories they are invoking are from eras when everyone’s lives had been improved by left-wing governments.

@paulhellyer @rogerparkinson There will be some people who thought that was a good thing, but as you say, they are not in their right mind.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@rogerparkinson @paulhellyer Will there be anyone who remembers that fondly?

@Daveosaurus When The Beatles sang “Taxman” it was “one for you, nineteen for me”, i.e. 95%.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@Daveosaurus it was real, but only applied to a particular class of investments. I think income tax topped out at 75 per cent, but there could be additional extra charges in certain circumstances.

Struggling to understand exactly what a ‘headless’ CMS is and why it might be useful. (It get the gist, but need more precision). Can anyone help or point me at an explanation.

@lightweight @TechCrunch Ha, one reason I switched from WordPress to Ghost was because it can do exactly that.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@lightweight @TechCrunch Just wasn’t up to date with the jargon…. ;)

@xurizaemon @TechCrunch Thanks for that.

I had baked beans on toast for dinner tonight. It was/(they were?) delicious. Very delicious. Sometimes the old favourites - mine anyway- just hit the right spot. In my university days I would eat spaghetti on toast an awful lot. Can't quite bring myself to buy Wattie's tinned spaghetti these days, but somehow baked beans seem ok.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@paulhellyer I’ve never understood why anyone would buy tinned spaghetti. Just mixing some low grade flour with second rate tomato sauce will get the same effect. On the other hand baked beans are totally underrated.

Successfully repelled the rather elderly Jehovah's Witnesses at the door with minimal injuries!

@lightweight @richardhulse @thomasbeagle when I was a student I once told a pair of Jehovah’s Witnesses they would burn in hell fire for their heresy. Went the full Tomás de Torquema Spanish Inquisition. It was mean of me, but I thought we wouldn’t get bothered again for a while. Oddly, the JWs seemed to be impressed by the performance.

Very narked with Twelve South today.

The wonderful Book Book cover for my iphone finally gave up the ghost after many years of service so i popped onto Amazon Twelve South store and they had a Journal cover for £48 that would fit my XS Max (no Book Book anymore).

The case broke after 5 weeks - 5 days after the last Amazon return date. Emailed Twelve South Support who deny this being their case or any liability.

So the Amazon Twelve South Store must be fake. Beware.

@simoncox Don’t know about UK consumer law, but in New Zealand and Australia the liability is with the seller not the manufacturer.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@simoncox I suspect the UK consumer protection law isn’t that different from here. Under our law, if you pay Amazon, Amazon is liable. However, it doesn’t apply to overseas purchases. In your case did you pay Amazon UK in pounds or the US company in dollars?

Men and other mammals live longer if they are castrated, says researcher - https://www.theguardian.com/science/article/2024/may/31/men-and-other-mammals-live-longer-if-they-are-castrated-says-researcher "Cat Bohannon tells Hay festival audience it is not known why men go through life ‘smuggling two little death nuggets’" great t-shirt slogan...

It's going to be interesting if a high profile convicted felon wants to visit his golf clubs or hotels in countries where felons are routinely denied visas.

billbennett,
@billbennett@mastodon.nz avatar

@bananabob I was hoping that was implied ;)

@bananabob Bob mate... I will always give you a break.
