I like to make apps that play with text and language. Currently working on WitKit and Uptalk. In the past, I built Lacona for Mac and worked on Assistant and Alexa. Husband and dad.

@brandonhorst I don’t know how I ended up with Spotlight, Alfred, Raycast and Dash installed on my Mac. I’m reading your Lacona2 website and I’m thinking maybe this is the one that will consolidate all of them. Am I wrong? I use Alfred for system needs, file management and app launcher, and services like download media. Dash for coding needs and Raycast for web apps interactions like browsing Pixabay, color searching, math and so on. I don’t need that many search bars. Wdyt?

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@albertkinng That sounds exhausting, but I don’t think Lacona will solve your problems. It is good at what it does but it doesn’t have a robust plugin infrastructure, so it is more limited than Alfred and Raycast. If I were you, I’d dive into the plugins on those two and try to consolidate. I know Alfred has a Dash plugin at least.

When I built it, I wanted it to solve your problems, but I couldn’t quite get there and it’s no longer under active development.

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@albertkinng Yeah my concern with raycast is their funding model. Eventually they’re going to need to start making more money to keep the VCs happy. But I’m interested to see where it goes!

I swear this feature will be useful.

@david_senate Haha you will need to provide those yourself. I am shopping with “You are a helpful assistant” and nothing more haha

Cleaning out the old feedback in Feedback Assistant app. Some of the feedback were still open from iOS 9 LOL. This one though, I would like to say I gave them the idea for… even though that’s probably not what happened haha.

@JTostitos I’d say you could put that one on your resume

What a day…

Got home early this morning from @DeepDishSwift to my son waking up with a 101 fever. Gave him some Tylenol and then went down for a long nap. Woke up even hotter and took him to the doctor.

Turns out he has an ear infection and now driving around to try and find a pharmacy that has amoxicillin in stock 🤦‍♂️

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@joshdholtz @DeepDishSwift Mine also got an ear infection today. It’s going to be a rough night here I think. Stay strong!

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@joshdholtz This is our second, and the first time we discovered she was allergic to amoxicillin 😭 different antibiotic this time, we’ll see how it goes. I hope that doesn’t happen to you!

NavigationSplitView was not designed.

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@marcoarment NavigationSplitView is the most SwiftUI of all SwiftUI components. It works great as long as you don’t try to fight it at all. Use it exactly as it was intended.

Unfortunately, how it was intended to be used is also not documented very well.

To me, there are only 2 levels of coffee quality. Within 5 days of opening the bag, all coffee tastes amazing. After, all coffee tastes mediocre.

I store my coffee, whole bean roasted, in airtight jars. Am I doing something wrong?

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli I use whole beans, but bags usually last me about a month. I may need to just start buying smaller bags.

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@Carljo I use a hand crank burr grinder and an Aeropress with a reusable metal filter.

@devondundee Oof, in that case I have some very bad news about your own kid.

Hashtag following in @IceCubesApp is brill. Enjoying all the posts, and trying to spot people in the crowd shots 😀

brandonhorst,

@lordmooch @IceCubesApp Agreed, but FYI this is a mastodon feature, all clients (that I know of) support it.

ivancantarino, to random Portuguese

@marcoarment asked ChatGPT to create a table with Blackbird, to see if it was able to do so just from the README information.

Here’s the reply!

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@ivancantarino @marcoarment I believe Blackbird was open sourced after GPT 3.5’s training cutoff. If you pass it the README manually, it’d probably do admirably.

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@ivancantarino @marcoarment It is funny and I don’t want to “well actually” something lighthearted, but ChatGPT cannot access the web to read webpages. Anything it “analyzed” was just from looking at the text of the url itself.

Which is interesting and impressive by itself!

saldarji, to random

I need some recommendations on how to spend the few seconds as ChatGPT responds. I suppose I should ask developers who have long build/compile times.

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@saldarji I like to draft and send versions of the same query, to see if they give better results.

This may be easier from my app than from ChatGPT itself, not sure.

@siracusa I think there was something missing from the discussion about the Reddit API on ATP - LLMs. Reddit’s unstructured data has suddenly become very valuable to folks training these models, and they don’t want to give it away for free. StackOverflow just announced very similar changes, with more explicit reasoning.

Congrats on launching, @MonaApp. Instant purchase from me.

Very excited to not need to manually update the Mac version anymore.

torb, (edited ) to random

@brandonhorst @lacona Any plans to add spelling to Lacona? I find it interesting as a more simple alternative to Alfred (which is kinda overkill for me), but one thing that keeps me is ability to spell check.

I write ’spell mizspelledword’ into Alfred all the time. Hitting enter will replace text in whatever I’m doing with the correct and I can also copy and paste it.

The intentionally invoking spelling by writing spell first is a big part of why it works so well for me. Technically speaking Spotlight can do spelling, but since you can’t make it go straight for spelling and you have to write a mispelled word and just hope it understands you want help with the spelling it doesn’t really work that well in practice.

I don’t know if this is something that would fit with your app (it’s your app, and you have to decide that), but I thought I’d at least mention it. I think your app looks very interesting as something more powerful than Spotlight, simpler than Alfred but also way more privacy friendly than Raycast.

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@torb @lacona At this point I’m not doing active development on Lacona, it has proven too large to maintain with my current life. It’s a good idea though! Sorry!

"Services" is the most misunderstood, underused, and ignored feature nobody cares. Open only by accident, and the content doesn't make sense anyway.

change my mind

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@krzyzanowskim It’s really useful, conceptually, but it needs to be rethought completely. So much garbage in there because the filtering tools are very limited. Lots of power though!

It’s somewhat moot though because they just don’t work at all in many apps, even good ones like Bear.

nighthawk, to random
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

https://mlc.ai/mlc-llm/ has a TestFlight beta for running an LLM locally on a modern iPhone. Remarkable that it works.

While GPT4 is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of quality, those locally run model could catch up. LLMs likely follow an S-curve in terms of their quality. Makes me wonder if GPT4 is near the top or still near the start or middle.

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@nighthawk Sadly it crashes on initialization for me in my 13 Mini

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@nighthawk It’s likely that it doesn’t actually send previous messages in as context for memory reasons. Still lots of limitations. Promising though!

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@nighthawk If it doesn’t have the context, and it hasn’t been specifically trained in the HFRL to say “I don’t know” to context-less thats, it will absolutely do that. Without that training, it’s just estimating what sorts of responses often come after “what’s your opinion of that?” In its training said, and “I don’t have enough context to respond you” definitely isn’t common haha
