I like to make apps that play with text and language. Currently working on WitKit and Uptalk. In the past, I built Lacona for Mac and worked on Assistant and Alexa. Husband and dad.

I never want to use flags to represent languages directly, but it’s fun to reference their colors in custom app icons!

@nao I’m finally on my mac and wanted to give this app a shot, and it looks like the website is down. Possible to give it a shot right now?

Days since I searched for something and found the answer in my own completely forgotten Stack Overflow answer: 0.

•This• is the compelling use case for me. If I use a translator to write messages in French I'm not forced to come up with an initial attempt and I lose the learning aspect of that.

If instead I put something into ChatGPT and it not only corrects but explains what my mistakes were that's a huge win in terms of learning from your mistakes.

(I still don't trust the thing 100% but it's also not a high stakes situation – I'm not engaging in a nuclear arms treaty after all 😅)

New Uptalk build on TestFlight! This includes a paywall (still free while in TestFlight), gpt-4o, and a few other nicities.

If you want to give it a shot, let me know.

I would be amazing if I could “Mac Mirror” from an iPad Pro just like I can from Vision Pro, but it would run from my MacBook sitting closed in my backpack

It would be the perfect portable computer on planes, coffee shops, etc where I’m more than happy to give up the big screen

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@charliemchapman I’m imagining an M4+battery+wifi combo, the size of a mac mini that you just keep in your bag, and connect either a vision pro or an iPad (or a phone?) to it to use as a screen.

Seems interesting but very un-Apple.

ChatGPT has moved to chatgpt.com. I’m curious how PM (if there even was one!) of the original launch feels that they built one of the biggest apps in the world and essentially gave it a placeholder name.

@harshil @kylebshr My wife got cards because she is contracting now and actually needs them, but she says almost everybody just does the “hold your iPhones together” thing now that that exists. Sounds kind of fun actually, I haven’t gotten a chance to use that yet haha

Where can I try voice stuff from the OpenAI video? I have GTP4o and it's impressive but where's the rest?

edit: @brandonhorst says it'll be available "in the coming weeks".

@marcel It’ll be available “in the coming weeks.”

GPT-4.omni would be amazing to answer and handle all phone calls without caller ID and from numbers not in my address book. Only let the valid non-spammy ones through to me. Take that robo calls. Let the AIs fight it out.

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@ricobeck @nighthawk Instruct it to agree to nothing and waste as much time as possible.

Of course, then you’ll end up spending just as much money, but in OpenAI fees instead.

With a native ChatGPT desktop app and free support for GPT-4o in ChatGPT, I suspect that there’s no longer much need for an app like WitKit to exist. We’ll see once this stuff actually rolls out.

WWDC may revive the concept, though, we’ll see!

Looks like GPT-4o includes audio-to-audio support (without text as an intermediary). Very excited to see how well it works for multilingual inputs. Unfortuantely, it looks like it’ll be a while before I can play with it, as it’s only coming “to a small group of trusted partners in the API in the coming weeks.”

Last week I did the math on how much I was going to need to charge for Uptalk, and it was much higher than I wanted. Then today, OpenAI comes along and cuts prices in half for their new model. I’ll take it!

I do not understand the anger at Stack Overflow. I post there specifically to help other people for free. Why should it matter if that help is filtered through an llm?

Maybe I’m missing something.

@mattiem That was the bit I was missing. I wouldn’t opt-out myself, but it does seem like a reasonable courtesy to offer it.

“iPads can’t do real work” is such a tired complaint. If your definition of real work is coding and managing documents, backhoes can’t do real work either.

Traveling with Vision Pro raised some existential questions about experiencing my own life. Do I ever need to be that distracted while traveling? Even if I’m alone in a hotel room, is it better to make a memory in that space than hide away in Mount Hood? When I read a book on an airplane I have a memory of reading a book on an airplane. With Vision Pro, even without the immersive environment, I just have a memory of watching Creed in my entire field of view. I don’t know.

brandonhorst,
@brandonhorst@techhub.social avatar

@MuseumShuffle @kyle I was about to make an excellent “look at this spacial photograph” joke, but then I remembered that Creed and Nickleback are not actually the same thing.
