Man, screw algorithmic timelines.

I saw a really interesting video on LinkedIn. I left my phone unlocked and went to the next room to show it to my GF. Accidentally, I pulled to refresh and now the video is gone. No way to retrieve it or to undo the refresh.

Perhaps I’m too used to Mastodon (and Tweetbot before), but algorithmic timelines are evil 😣

torb,

@Aday Not only timelines, this happens with the entire internet.

I remember I saw an as I liked (a classy one, from The Deck I think). I just noticed it as I was clicking away.

Hit the back button and it had been switched our for something else.

Because of the web’s instability I open things in new tabs all the time so I don’t lose stuff.

The discussion of Facebook owned stuff coming to Fediverse is a tradeoff between increasing fediverse adoption and protecting what makes fediverse not suck in the ways Facebook/Twitter/etc does.

I've come to the conclusion that I prefer fediverse to not get damaged by bigger socials even if that means it stays small.

For geeky stuff Mastodon have been much better than my experiences with other socials.

(Definitely not perfect, and many seem to have had much worse experiences than me, but still seems better than the alternatives for a lot of people.)

The Zig programming language seem really cool. It allows you to go really low level, but it also seems quite friendly and easy to understand at the same time?

The more I read and think the more I agree with those who are sceptical of fedi interaction with Meta.

torb,

@maegul That’s not new tho. I mean, people (both on and outside) have been pointing that out for a good while.

There’s a reason it’s often compared to old school forums.

I am away from my family, my primary support network, I’m not super extrovert despite how I look or I am perceived. I’m very bad at maintaining proper social connections unless it’s work related. The social platforms helped me to have informal local contacts that can help me out or I can help them out. Degrading these connections can lead to serious trouble that I can’t get out of bc I’m no longer “visible” for them.

torb,

@boby_biq I was withoit Facebook for some years. When I rejoined people told me that it was like I was dead.

I maintain a minimal Facebook presence to keep in touch with some people.

But I really hate that I have to.

torb,

@boby_biq Similar situation with Twitter too for me.

I’m of such two minds of this Meta joining fediverse stuff.

I practically stopped using Facebook because I got horrible transphobic hate speech specifically targeted to me through hate speech.

So I know how fucked Facebook the company is.

But I still have to use Facebook less I loose touch with a lot of family and dear friends. I suppose my hope is that if Facebook has something federated… it’s the broader fediverse that will win in the end.

Practically speaking I’d just like to get posts from people I care about in my feed without also getting vile bigotry.

EDIT: Let’s refuse to use ‘Meta’ to refer to Facebook.

Hell, I bet it would even be more profitable. Healthier workers → higher quality work.

Every time someone refers to Facebook as Meta, it feels like a small defeat for humanity. This rebrand sticking is just a bit sad

torb,

@VileLasagna @mcc You’ve just convinced me to try to push back. Nobody calls Google Alphabet, this should be winnable.

Look, I have complicated feelings about Meta and them coming to the fedi, but 'giving them the benefit of the doubt' is not remotely one of them.

That platform has been one of the most violent purveyors of bigoted violence and the planet, and somehow, magically, they are going to change overnight if they come to the fedi??

That level of naivety is the exclusive purview of white men with no skin in the game.

That is an absurd stance to take that directly endangers everybody, not white, straight, and male.

    torb,

    @Are0h Very good point!

I still have a Facebook account, but I’ve reduced my presence there to a minimum.

The tipping point was getting targeted transphobic hate speech in my feed delivered through their ad system. 😣

  • torb,

@davidgarywood @drahardja I think Fedi ought to be able to somehow handle Extend-Extinguish attempts. Think of the web and Microsoft. It was so resilient that their EE attempt just didn’t work and today Microsoft just uses web tech like everybody else.

It’s not a like-for-like, but I feel like the fediverse is dead in the water for mainstream usage if we somehow aren’t able to handle stuff like this.

Completely agree regarding calling things childish is inappropriate tho. Peope have very good reasons to be sceptical towards Meta. I wonder ir EU privacy and monopoly laws + having servers in EU could be part of the solution here.

    torb,

@drahardja As others have pointed out: Facebook treats their users like garbage. You could make a case for not federating based on users needs alone.

Facebook let people use their ad system to specifically push transphobic hate speech to trans people. That’s how Facebook treats their users. Do we want that kind of shit to spill over into the fediverse?

    torb,

@drahardja @davidgarywood Pretty much eveyone I interact with on Facebook have been queer or queer supporting.

But: someone still managed to specifically target me with transphobic hate speech through their ad system. Other minorities have similar experiences.

It didn’t help that I was on some of the less shitty part. Facebook provides the mechanism for bigots to reach and harass their targets.

There was a woman I saw on a dating app who was cute as fuck, and our social perspectives were just about perfectly aligned, but as I kept reading her profile, she explicitly stated no cis men should reach out to her.

sigh Disappointing because I think we would get along smashingly... but we respect boundaries here.

    torb,

@Are0h @glaspest I feel like part of the thing here is that dating apps require people to have rules like that because the dynamics.

In meeting in the real world things might be more organic. I’ve seen this very rule be gent bent, but that’s when someone already knew eachother through common friends. Allows for more nuance. Not really possible on dating apps in the same way.

Not that eveything with dating apps are bad. There’s tradeoffs with eveything.

@marcan Do you think third party ARM chip provider could be the solution for a future Mac Pro? Things like Fujitsu A64FX or Ampere at least show that ridiclously scaled up ARM solutions can exist?

in a curious way, reddit's new api charging model has improved reddit. and most curiously, it has sent the improvements into the past.

that is to say: up until a month ago, any mention of reddit on my timeline was about what a dying shithole it still was. but now, apparently, it's an internet treasure suddenly being consumed by a capitalist land grab.

    torb,

@aldroid Maybe people don’t so much about when things work? I used to love Reddit (despite having principled worries about centralisation, which now turned out to be correct worries).

I’m not optimistic for Mastodon’s mass adoption. It think it will remain a a niche geek thing.

However, I am optimistic about the broader fediverse in the long term. I just think it might take some time.

    torb,

@Vigdisol @thomasrost Venstre og MdG er litt samme type folk. De to er jo langt på vei det mest teknisk bevisste partiene.

Like partier på mange måter. Som eks-Venstreperson og båværende MdG-medlem så vil jeg si at MdG er et sosialliberalt parti som faktisk tar sosial-delen på alvor. :)

    torb,

@siljelb @Vigdisol @thomasrost I meant more as a niche social network for geeks in general, not merely for geeks with only niche interest. 🙈

Coming on Mastodon to complain how Twitter sucks then immediately going back to post on Twitter is getting really fucking old.

    Stop. Using. Twitter.

    torb,

@davidgarywood @rolle @demvoter Yeah, loosing blocks sounds terrifying. I fear that would make bigots chase a lot of minorities of the platform rather quickly.

Not to be cynical accelerationist… but maybe then more people would really give it a try?
