let this be a thread of my frustrating experiences with firefox because I couldn't be bothered to deal with their issue trackers and forums

  1. at least in edge and chrome you can send feedback straight from the app and they contact you and send updates via email if you provide one

Quite saddening thinking of the fact that Mastodon is going to stay the Linux of the operating systems, Firefox of the web browsers. I don't blame Mastodon for that, and frankly these things that I mentioned are good to have, it's just the conditions and the way society is, that I don't see Mastodon being anything more. People couldn't care less about values Mastodon is built with, and they rather endure malpractices than give up on the convenience.

Regarding the recent malware issue with Minecraft mods, there were misguided claims that Modrinth is safer than CurseForge.

That's not entirely true, and there are certain things about Modrinth making it more susceptible to such malware. I hope Modrinth team addresses this in the morning.

Why the hell blocking an instance would instantly remove people's follows to users on the blocked instance? Just keep it there, show these follows as unavailable.

This would make the mstdn.social/mastodon.art incident so much less damaging.

developers, do you think should be a part of the build process?

I've seen quite a few projects use and plugins to run ESLint during their build process. This both shows a huge error overlay when there are linting errors, and halts the build when building for production.

However, I never understood that, as linting does not really ensure validity of the code, but rather that it aligns to some stylistic rules.

What do y'all think about this?

The way Mastodon federates makes me wonder, how does it work legally? With centralised social media you agree to their ToS and PP which controls how they can act with your data and such, however in fediverse your content will be shared to and stored on other instances which may have different ToS and PP. Should instances implement ‘Federation principles’ which other receiver instances would be obligated to follow? Would it legally hold?

I really can't understand what #Firefox is doing for 9 minutes on cold boot while reading/writing 12 MB/s to disk

This is insanity, this is so beyond terrible

Yeah, #Chromium browsers can too take some time to launch for the first time after not being used for quite some time, but not 9 MINUTES, maximum a minute-two

oh wow, phanpy works so much better in firefox

users: given a chance wont spend a single second to educate themselves about piece of software

devs: create workflow in which they briefly focus user attention so that they can get familiar with the software

users: ‘I so hate when you educate me. I'm not stupid, you know!!!’

my favourite interaction is
— how the f--k do I change the keyboard layout on the login screen?
— why do you even use custom layout? like what's the point?

continuing my bluesky exploration: not only they got their own HOAs, but also elitist mindset where they think they're better than everyone else 👍 (do they realise the invites system is not permanent?)

it's basically people who came here from twitter, decided that they're above the rules, started pushing everyone around, and when told ‘hey, let's be respectful to everyone and mindful of experience folks try to build here’ complained how awful everything here is and left. that kind of people...

Abruptly hanging up a call with my mother because I dared to say that I despise the concept of personal vehicles and further conversation turned into yelling, strawman arguments, and personal insults.

My mother never owned a car, and her city now prioritises cars more than people like her, yet she is brainwashed to defend them at all costs. This is some dystopian shit and absolutely horrifying.

You guys say you hate intrusive ads.

We knew the feeling, we've listened to you and we made super nonintrusive and privacy friendly ads at Modrinth.

But many of you still choose to block this ad, effectively saying through that that you don't care about projects like Modrinth and creators that publish mods on it (who earn 100% of revenue from ads displayed on their pages, btw).

I don't think ads are your problem, rather your magical thinking that we live in a free world and your entitlement.

after several attempts at testing it, my conclusion is that is overhyped and rushed to ‘release’ software of alpha quality

I see no applications where I want to use it, even its own tools aren't working. trading stability for performance is probably the worst trade you can make

and I have suspicions about the intents behind deno and bun. like I just don't have any good feeling about VC funded business like that

Fediblockers banning Bluesky domain (which doesn't and probably never will federate with ActivityPub) is gotta be the clownish thing

I spend way too much time on mastodon now instead of doing useful things

uh oh

brawaru, to Discord
@brawaru@mstdn.social avatar

At this point I am fairly certain Discord's reporting and explicit content filtering systems are only created as a way of shielding from responsibility of maintaining safety on their own platform.

Instead, I believe their goal is to shift that burden and responsibility onto unpaid volunteer moderators. The interactions I've had with their support pretty much confirm that.

They've cut all means to report content other than through seriously flawed in-app system

my favourite feature in is when it blasts you with white flash during the page loading when you have dark mode on. keeps that migraine in check

brawaru, to random
@brawaru@mstdn.social avatar

Light and dark mode are accessibility features.

By paywalling them you are saying that you don't care about your users.

hot take: 500 characters limit is really good and forces you to write easy to digest posts

but also, complaints about threads are valid. it's the worst format in existence. mastodon and co really should have article attachments similar to how telegram does telegra.ph articles

so you get an inviting article embed and can press it to instantly read it, no need to open browser. plus maybe have the ability to select text and comment on it or share it with others
